WELL-PUMP CONSTRUCTION.
Application tiled may 21, 1921, Serial No. 471,45?. Renewed March l?, w28.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that we, @OMER W. PRICE and CURT F. ZIMANsKr, citizens of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco and State ot California, have invented a new and useful lm provement in a WelLPump Construction, of which the following is a specification.
A Our invention relates to improvements in well pump construction wherein a pump shaft casing operates in conjunction with a discharge casing to produce a rigid supporting structure for the pump shaft to prevent whipping or lateral movement of said shaft.
The primary object of theI resent invention is to provide a new and improved construction for well pumps adapted to provide a rigid support lfor a pump shaft extending therethrough.
A further object is to provide a new and improved device of the character described which vmay be easily and readily disassembled and reassembled without changing the relative positions of the several parts.
It is -also an object to provide improved means embodied within a pump shaft casing and a discharge casing for providing a rigid supporting structure for a pump shaft to prevent lateral movement or whipping of said shaft.
A still further object of our invention is to provide |a device ot the character described having 'improved means for centering a discharge casing and a pump shaft and casing therefor in such a manner that the dischar casing may be placed under a tensionfan the shaft casing under compression whereby the reaction ot both stresses will provide a rigid supporting structure and resist lateral movement of the several parts.
We accomplish these and other objects by means of the improved device disclosed in the drawings forming a part ot the present specification wherein like characters of refarts ings, and in which:
Figs. 1 and 1 are broken vertical sectional views of a deep well pump disclosing our improved construction; and
lFi 2 is an enlarged broken vertical sectionad view of a portion ot the well casing, dischargeasing, shaft and shaft casing.
Referring to the drawings the numeral 1 1s used to designate a well casing within which is centered and suspended a discharge casing` 2 having a suitable pump 3 attached to the lower end thereof, said discharge cassections of the discharge casing 2 in spaced relation to permit movement of the spiders 10, which are arranged or rovided at regular intervals throughout t e length of thestructure, within the annular recesses S, the purpose of which will hereinafter be more fully set forth. The spider 10 and its mounting is full described in a co-pending application, erial Number $11,460, May 21st, 1921, patented aan. 30, 1923, Ne. 1,443,516 reference to which is hereby made.
A sectional pump shaft 14 is connected at its lower end to the runners, not shown, of the pump 3 and the upperend of said shaft is provided with a suitable pulley 16 by means of which said shaft la may be rotated.
To enclose the pump shaft 14 and bearings l1 from the water in the discharge casing 2 we have provided sectional pump shaft casings 17 of substantially the same length as the lengths of the discharge casing 2, the adjacent ends of adjacent sha-ft casings engaging the shoulders 12 on opposite ends ofthe same bearing 11, whereby said shaft casings 17 may be centered relatively to the pump att 14 and the discharge casing 2.
The lower end of the lowermost shaft section 17 is seated upon a similar annular shoulder 18 arranged on the upper end of the pump 3 while the upper end of the u permost shaft casing section is similarly* seated within a shoulder 19 arranged in the lower portion ot a thrust bearing member 2O which is slidahly mounted within a frame 21, resting upon the outlet eastin d, and movable relatively to said frame 21|meane ldd of suitable screws 22 rotatably mounted within said frame 21 and screw threaded into the thrust bearing member 20, the pur pose of which will hereinafter be more fully described.
After the several sections of the discharge casing 2, spiders 10, shaft 14 and shaft casing 17 are assembled and in position within the well, the screws 22 are operated to move the bearing member `2() downward, which action will place the shaft casing sections under compression and clamp said sections between their respective shoulders, to produce a tight fit between said `shaft casing sections and shoulders, and simultaneously place the sections of the discharge casing 2 under tension, the spiders 10 moving within their respective annular channels 8 of the pipe flanges 6 to adjust the several parts relatively to each other.
It is the combination of the discharge casing 2 under tension and the shaft casing 17 under compression which produces a rigid structure to rigidly support the shaft 14, and thereby prevent lateral movement of said shaft 14 as well as of the discharge and shaft casings 2 and 17 respectively.
1n other words, the shaft casing 17 is rigidly held in compression or trussed by the tension of the discharge casing 2.
The provision of the flanges 6 to connect the sections of the discharge casing 2 is an important feature of the invention as by means of this arrangement the lengths of the said sections, after initial assembling, is maintained so that the several parts of the structure may be readily7 and easily reassembled, when removed t or repairs or other purposes,l in the same or original relative positions, thereby eliminating the necessity for readjustment after such reassemblage.
As the spiders 10 are movably mounted within the discharge casing 2 it is evident that the cbmpression of the shaft casing 17 may be adjusted relatively to said discharge casing 2 without disturbing the said discharge casing. 1t is obvious, then, that the joints between adjacent ends of the shaft casing sections 17 may be out disturbing the discharge casing 2 or the shaft 14 for the reason that said shaft 14 is slidably as well asrotatably mounted within the bearings 11 of the spiders 10.`
This novel arrangement also provides an inherent circulatory lubricating system for the shaft 12 and bearings 11, wherein a 1ub'ricant introduced'by means of the pipe 23 tothe upper section of theshaft casing 17 circulates through said shaft casing 17 'and bearings 11, and spent lubricant is dispensed through a channel 24C ,'nto the well, the subject matter of which is covered in a copending application.
t is obvious from the foregoing that we have provided a new and improved structure tightened with' for well pumps wherein a rigid support is provided to center the shaft and shaft casing'within a discharge casing and arranged to prevent lateral movement of said shaft.
It is also obvious that the several parts may be disassembled and easily and readily reassembled without requiring readjustment of the several parts.
Having thus described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
