Description
UNITED STATES PATENT Grrron.
NICHOLAS LINDEN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN STOVE-PIPE THIMBLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,579, dated Deeeml: er 16, 1873; application filed November 13, 1873.
l'o all rwhom it Imay concern Be it known that I, NicHoLAs LINDEN, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stove Pipe Thimblcs, of which improvements the following is a full, clear, and exact description, which will enable others skilled in the 'art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a pa-rt hereof, and in which- Figure l is a front elevation of one part of my improved device a-s it appears before the opening for the pipe is iliade, and Fig. 2 a central cresssection of the device when completed.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts.
The object ot' my invention is to make astovepipe thimble which may be readily and cheaply constructed, and which will fit a chimneydiole considerably larger than the stovepipe, and hold the latter tirmly in its position in the hole, and so that an annular air-space will surround that part of the pipe which enters the hole. For the, purpose of accomplishin g the objects above setfortli, my invention consists in certain novel features relating to the cmstruction of the thimble, and hercinatter fully described.
In thedrawing, A represents a disk of sheet metal, about equal in diameter to the diameter required for the thimble. a a are radial tongues cut in the part A, and extending from, or nearly from, the center thereof, to, or nearly to, a circular line bounding the opening` for the pipe. aa are also radial tongues cut in the pa-rt A, and extending to the same outer circle that the tongues a ar do. I deem it preferable, in order to secure strength and iirm ness, to make the sides of each tongue a parallel to each other for a considerable distance, as shown, and this will result in making the tongues a the shortest. The points of the tongue may also be cut away, as shown After the tongues a a and a a are cut, I arrange them in the position shown in Fig. 2. The face of the part A may also be pressed into any suitable form, for the purpose of giving it an ornamental appearance, as shown. B is a cylindrical piece of sheet metal, of such a diameter as to fit nicely into a chimney-hole considerably larger than the stove-pipe. The piece B is attached to the piece A, in the position shown in Fig. 2, by drawing the tongues a a. back, and by turning them over the edge of the piece B, as shown. The piece A may be formed and its tongue cut and set by means of stamps or dies suitable for that purpose.
It will be perceived, from reference to thc drawing, that an air-space exists between the pi eee B and the tongues, as shown at c, and that the tongues c af present a broad bearing to the pipe. and prevent it from being tilted, cX- cept for the purpose of forming such a bearing; and for thc purpose of forming a more complete double wall to the air-space, the tongues a. a! may be omitted. It will also be perceived that the other objects above set forth may also be readily accomplished by means ot' a thiinble constructed substantially as herein shown and described.
Having thus described my invention, what I cla-iin as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The .annular sheet-metal disk A, having a central opening cut therein to receive the pipe, in combination with the cylindrical piece B, arranged between the outer and inner rims or' the said disk, and attached to the inner face of the Vlatter by means of the radial tongues a a, cut from the central part of said disk, and bent to receive the pipe andv clasp the inner edge ot' the part B, substantially as shown and described, and for the purposes set forth.
NICHOLAS LINDEN.
Titnesses F. F. WARNER, J. H. LAWLOR.
