A1 WITNESSES: INVIENTUB.:
UNITED STATES A PATENT OFFICE.
FRANCIS KEEHN, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
IMPROVEMENT IN PRINTERS SIDE-STICKS AND QUOINS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,574, dated December 16, 1873; application filed November 8, 1873.
To all whom 'it may concern.:
Be it known that I, FRANoIs KEEIIN, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Visconsin, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Printers Side Sticks and Quoins, of which the following is a spec-incation In the accompanying drawing, Figure l represents a top view of my improved side-sticks and quoins for locking printers forms; and Fig. 2 a vert-ical vtran sverse section of the same on the line c c, Fig. 1.
Similar letters of refe-rence indicate corresponding parts.
The object of myinvention is to furnish, for the use of printers, an improved side-stick and vquoins, by which theforms may be easily set without injuring` theimposing-stone, and firmly retained during the printing process. My invention consists in constructing the sidestick with wedge-shaped sections, which are wider at the base, forming a projecting step, along which the wedge-shaped quoins, with a similarly-projecting top step, are guided, so as to contine the type 1n the chase.
In the drawing, A represents the side-stick, and B the quoins, which are either made of malleable iron, or cut from bar-iron with rotary cutters, or pressed in suitable dies, as maybe found most convenient. The side-stick A is made of alternately wedge-shaped sections, as indicated in Fig. l,and produced with a wider base, which projects, in the shape ofa step, A, about midway on the outer side of the same. The quoins B are also produced in wedge-shape, of suitable size, with a top projecting step, B', which is placed on step A', and driven along the same to lock the types in the chase. p
The shape of the steps, and the width of sidestick and quoins, correspond exactly in size, so that the quoins may be rmly driven in position on the side-stick without injuring the imposing-stone. The quoins are even with the top of the side-stick, and allow the side-stick to be made of the same height as the chase. The wedge shape of side-stick and quoins admits the rapid locking and separating of the type, and the rigid retention of the same during printing.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure'by Letters Patentl. A printers side-stick, produced with alternatin g wedge-shaped sections and proj ecting base-step, substantially as described.
2. A quoin for locking the side-stick to the forms, being of equal height with the sidestick, and of wedge shape, with a projecting top step, as specied.
