T all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD .losnrir HILL, citizen of the United States.v residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain improvements in Lifting Devices.
The object of this device is to provide a clean and easy means for raising a box or basket of ashes or the like from the level of the cellar floor to the level of the celler window and lifting it so that the effort re quired is much less than is the case when they are lifted by hand and so that the job can be done without getting dirty as is ordinarily the case.
I attain these objects by the means shown in the accompanying drawing and described in the annexed specification.
The drawing shows the ash lifter in perspective and in a partly raised position.
Referring to the drawing, 1 is the base upon which the device stands. Pivoted to the said base by the hinge 2 is the leg 8 which is pivoted at its upper end to the platform 4. by means of the hinge 5. At each side of the base 1 is pivoted the legs (3 and 7 by means of the bolts 8 and 9. These legs are also pivoted to the sides of the platform 4: by means of the bolts 10 and 11 and are provided with the grips or handles 12 and 13 by means of which the apparatus is operated. The legs 3, 6 and 7 are provided with means by which the platform 4 may be ad- The leg 8 is provided with a sleeve 14 which telescopes over it and the two parts are connected together by means of the bolt 15 which passes thru the holes 16. Adjustment of the legs 6 and 7 is made by putting the bolts 10 and 11 in one of the holes 17.
The device is placed on its base 3. on the cellar floor with the legs 6 and 7 laid down parallel to the floor and at right angles to the wall beneath the window. This brings the platform 4 almost down to the floor, an ash box or basket is than placed on the platform 4 and the handles 12 and l3 are grasped and lifted. At the beginning of the lift the operator raises somewhat less than the full weight of the ashes and at this point this is very easy to do on account of the mechanical advantage obtained by the leverage which more than compensates for the weight of the device and as the platform is raised the effort required for lifting becomes less until when it reaches the top the lift is zero.
As shown in the drawing the adjustment for the l'ieight of the platform 4 is made, in
the case of the legs 6 and 7, by placing the bolts 1.0 and ill 1n different holes in saidle s, and in the case of the legs 3, by mean's of the sleeve 14 and a bolt passing thru both, butit is evident that all three legs could be provided with a sleeve similar to that on leg 3 for purposes of changing their length with out departing from the scope of this invention.
I am aware that devices have been made previously which raise a platform while said platform remains horizontal, and I therefore do not claim such a means broadly but I claim:
rest on the floor or the like, two tubes or rods pivoted by their lower ends to said base, one to each side; a third tube or rod pivoted by its lower end to another point of said base, which performs a function similar to the first named two tubes .or rods, said third tube being provided with a series of holes along its length; a sleeve provided with a hole at its lower end to match holes in said third tube, said third tube being adapted to slip into said sleeve; a pin or bolt adapted to engage saidhole, in said sleeve, and one of said holes in said third tube and to lock said sleeve and said vthird tube together, a platform pivoted to the upper end of said sleeve and to intermediate points on the first named two tubes or rods and grips attached to said tubes or rods at their upper ends with which to raise said platform relative i. The combination of a base adapted to to said base through the medium of the three I tubes or rods.

The combination of a base adapted to rest on the floor or the like, two parallel members'pivoted to said base at their lower ends, a third member parallel to said first named members pivoted to another point of said base, a platform pivoted to the upper end of said third member and to an inter mediate point of said first named parallel members, grips attached to said first named parallel members for raising said platform relative to said base thru the medium of said three members and means for adjusting the relative positions of said platform and said base.
