T 0 all 'whom t mayl concern eit known that, I, HAiyrinroN'fLrNDszr,
a citizen of the. United States, residing at' Cleveland,v in the county of Cuyahoga yand 1.5 State` of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in a Reed for .Wreaving WireCloth, of which the follow-A ing is a full, clear, ande-Xact description,
reference being had .to the accompanying '10 drawings.
1 This inventionrelates Vto reeds Stich as are used in looms, for weaving wire cloth, vand has for one of its objects the provision of an improved reed construction whichtends to lengthen the period of service of a reedu A construction heretofore employed forl making reeds has been to secure the reed teeth, or dents, between binding strips which yextend transve-rsely of the teeth fand' longitudinally of the hatten frame.- These binding strips are usually made of wood,
and are so connected that when the battenstrikes the woven fabric to drive' a shoot wire into position, the stresses incident to the blow are transmitted directly to these strips. Since the teeth are placed edgewise intermediate these strips, the force of the blow tends to drive the vteeth into the wooden strips, thus cutting them` and ma terially shortening the life of the reed.
My invention seeksto overcome this tendency to cut by providing metallic inserts on the batten strips adjacent the edges of the teeth, and at the same time leaving suiiicient material above and below the insert for securely holding the teeth in spaced relation to each other after the reed is as'- sembled.
The means for accomplishing my inven# tion will be hereinafter fully set forth in the following description which pertains to the accompanying drawings, and the essential features will be vsummarized inthe claims.
In t-he drawings, Fig. l is a perspective view of a portion of a loom which carries a reed constructed according to my invention; Fig. 2 is a transverse section on an enlarged scale through the batten frame; and
reed construction.

These inserts f are preferably metallic strips which arefemg' ,bedded in the wooden binders, so that the exposed face thereof lies in the same plane` as the faces of the binders whichengage -the 1 i dents of the-reed. The arrangementvof the 'binding strips' with relation to the reed per-1 j.

For en j abling the vbin'derstoA be clamped tightly against the b-atten frame without damage to the reed, suitable metallic inserts .-22 and '.90

opposite the inner inserts. A reedconstructed according to my 1nservice therein by means of the metallic` contact between the inserts and the edges of the dents. Furthermore, these particular infr serts may be embedded in existing binding stripswithout necessitating material changes' in the construction thereof, vand' withoutim pairing the character of the'worlrwovenbyf looms employing this type ofreed.y claimzv f i. 1. In adeviceoi'" th'efclass described the lcombination with. a plurality of reed dents placed ,side by side, of means for retaining said dents vinspaee'd relation to each other, and metallic `strips adjacent said dents whereby the Working stresses set upin the dents are transmitted to thebatten frame through said strips.
6. In combination, aplurality of reed dents l placed side by side, a pair of binding strips extending transversely vthereof and' along the top, another j pairj of `strips extending transversely thereof and alongr the bottom, i and a metallic bearing plate carried vby each j of said strips and on `that portion thereof adj aeent said dentsf ,7; In a device of the vclass described, the combination with' ak plurality of. reed dents placed side by side, of a pair of non-metallic binders extending along the top of the dents, anotherA pair of bindersextendingV In testimony whereof, Iv hereunto aiX my l signaturel HAMILTON LINDSAY. l
