REGISTER FOR PRINTING MACHINES.

Be it known that I, JOSEPH Lnwrs, of the city of IVinnipeg, in the Province of Manitoba, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Registers vfor Printing Machines, of which the following is the specification.
The invention relates to improvements in attachments to printing machines, and particularly to counting attachments, and the principal object of the invention is to provide a counting attachment associated with the delivery end of a folding press which will actually count the sheets passed to the folding end of the press, with the result that one, in using this appliance, has an accurate record of all, the sheets actually delivered and exclusive of those destroyed in or removed `from the machine as often occurs.
A further object of the invention is to construct a counting` attachment particularly adaptable to folding presses, such as a Hoe press, the counter being arranged such that it is released or unlocked by the delivered sheet and allowed,when unlocked, to count, the movement taking place when the folding blade goes down.
With the above objects in view, the invention consists essentially in the arrangement and construction of parts hereinafter more particularly described and later pointed out in the appended claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawings in which?- Fig. 1 represents a plan view .of the delivery end or folding table of a folding press with my invention applied thereon.

The present invention which embodies a counter very similar tothat disclosed in the former application has special adaptations, making it particularly applicable to a folding press such as the I-Ioe press already mentioned. As a press of this kind is well known I have not considered it necessary to minutely enter into the details thereof but have only herein shown and described the delivery end in so far as the parts associated with my invention are concerned.
Referring now to the drawings 1 represents the folding table? of a ress which is supplied at the sides with delivery tapes 2 and 3 operated by the press mechanism and designed to deliver the sheets on to the table, the sheets being stopped by the sheet stop 4 located towards the end of the table. The table is provided with a lengthwise extending slot 5 positioned directly beneath the folding knife 6 which is suspended by swinging cranks 7 and 8 from elevated cross shafts 9 and 10 mounted in the sides of the table.
11 represents an operating crank extendingfrom the shaft 9 and connected by a rod 12 to an operating part of the press which forms no part of my invention but which is designed to swing the crank 11 at a proper time inwardly and outwardly to effect the up and down movement of the'blade this occurring after the sheet has been delivered by the tapes-on to the tab-le.
From this arrangement it is obvious that each sheet delivered will be folded and pressed down through the slot 5 by the blade 6. The up and down movement of the blade and a delivered sheet are the only parts of the folding press on which I rely to actuate my counter.
The counting appliance indicated generally by the reference numeral 13 is permanently fastened by screws 14 to the table in a location adjacent the end of the folding blade and it comprises thek following parts 15 represents a counter of any approved type which is provided with sight openings 16 through which the numbers on the several discs 17 of the counter can be clearly seen. The counter and the details of it form no part of my invention.
Such a counter is usually supplied with a with a notch 21 and the long end extending l towards the upper part of the blade 6 and normally engaging an angle plate 22 fastened by the bolt 23 to the end of the blade, the arrangement being such that when the yblade is in its uppermost position and the lever is resting on the plate 22 the counter is in an inert position and set so that the numbers can be clearly seen through the sight openings.
A coiled spring 25 extends between the long arm of the lever and the base 26 of the counter, this spring serving to pull down on the long end of t-he lever and cause it, unless otherwise locked to follow down with the blade 6. The full downmovement of the blade is designed to effect sufficient swing in the lever' to cause the shaft 19 to turn an amount sufficient to actuate the counter discs and register.
27 represents a substantially L-shaped trip lever pivotally mounted on a pin 28 carried by the base 26 andy 29 represents an outstanding rod attached to the lever and provided with an adjustable weight 30. The upper end of the lever 27 is provided with a shoulder 31 engageable in the non-counting position of the long arm of the lever 2O with a catch 32 in thenature of an angle bracket permanently secured to the lever 20. The lower end of the lever 27 extends towards the blade and is formed with a t-ripping foot 33 positioned somewhat in advance of the sheet stop 4 so that the oncoming sheet passing between the blade and the table will strike the foot .piece and carry it with it prior to reaching the sheet stop. The movement so produced by the oncoming sheet is utilized to release the lever 20 by withdrawing the shoulder 31 from beneath the angle bracket Here it will be noticed that the outer edge of the lever 27 next the shoulder presents an inclined face 34. The angle bracket is designed to travel down this face once released from the shoulder and push the engaged up- 21 and positively lock the long end'r f the lever 2O against downward swinging.
The operation of the counting attachment is now described, assumin the press in operation and a sheet being elivered on to the table by the tapes and that the sheet is actually stopped b the sheet stop 4 before the blade starts its ownward travel.
As the oncoming sheet passes towards its final position against the sheet stop the oncoming edge strikes the foot 33 and swings the lever 27 in a direction such that the' shoulder 31 is passed from beneath the7 bracket 32. Accordingly when the blade starts its downward travel the long end of the lever swings down with it under the action of the spring 25 and effects the operation of the counter through the movement of the shaft 19.
In the up travel of the blade the lever 20 is returned to its original position and the shoulder 31 of the lever 27 passesI back be*-4 neath the bracket 32, as durin the up and down movement the angle brac ct 32 travels the inclined edge 34 of the lever and accordingly is ready to enter the notch as soon as the notch presents itself, the weight 30 controlling this action.
Accordingly then, each time the sheet is delivered the locking lever 27 and the shoulder 21 are placed in locking position. Should no sheet however be delivered the trip lever 27 will not be actuated and ac- I cordingly as the long end of the lever 20 moves down with the knife it is caught by the shoulder 31 and is locked in its u noncountin position and this even alt ough the bla e 6 may make an idle stroke.
If one wishes to operate the press without counting the delivered sheets he simply swings the arm 35 up to engage the pin 37 in the notch 21 and thereby locks the lever 20 against movement irrespective of whether the foot 33 is tripped or not.
What I claim as my invention In a folding press, the combination with a paper delivering means, a counter, and a moving, paper folding member, of a controlling lever connected to the counter and normally engaging the folding member and adapted to follow the movement thereof to effect the operation of the counter and a selfsetting trip lever normally engaging and locking the controlling lever against movement and provided with a foot piece extendin into the ath of the delivered paper and a apted to be actuated thereby to release the controlling lever and permit it to follow the movement of the folding member. i
