IMPROVEMENT IN MACHINES FORBENDING CHAIN-LINKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,511 dated December 16, 1873; application filed May 23, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES B. LONG, of Worcester, in the county of WVorcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Bending Chain-Cable Links, of which the following is a specification:
The object of my invention is to bend chaincable links in an expeditious manner, preparatory to their being cut and welded; and it consists principally in alternately griping and sliding jaws, revolving around with a former and a stationary standard, in such manner as to bend the wire into the form of the links desired without separating the same from each other, the wire, after being bent, forming a continuous coil, from which the links may be cut and welded.

Between these wing-pieces F F are placed the sliding jaws G G.- Into the front end of these jaws are dovetailed adjustable steel gripers H H, adjusted by means of set-screws I passing through the ends of the I jaws G G. To the rear ends of these jaws are afiixed frictionrolls K K and L L, the former having a bearing upon the outside of the rim -piece C, and the latter traversing around in the groove J, which has a diversion at D, where the friction-rolls L L, when the jaws are being revolved, come in contact with the side of the groove J, alternately drawing back the jaws G or G, so as to allow the gripers H H to pass the support or rest T, over which the wire being bent is drawn. A depression in the rim-piece C, at the point 0, allows the friction-rolls K or K to slide back without touching the same. When the jaw has passed the rest or support T it is immediately forced out again by the groove J, so that the revolution of the shaft will cause them alternately to gripe the wire and hold it fast against the former S upon the face-plate B. This face-plate may be removed, and one substituted in its place having a different sized or shaped former, S, so as to bend the wire into the form most desirable. The rest or support T is adjusted by set-screws at its base U, so as to bring its end T the proper distance from the former S, to receive the various sizes of wire to be bent.
The end of the wire is formed or bent into a hook, the end of which is passed around the former S, the jaws G and G (see Fig. 1) being adjusted toward or from the former S by means of the cams B or P, which fit into sliding boxes V within the jaws G G, as shown in Fig. 2. The rear ends of these jaws are held in place by a spring, M.
It will be seen that if motion is imparted to pulley W and driving-shaft E by belt Y, the jaws being previously adjusted so as to gripe the wire, the revolutions of the jaws will draw the wire over the point T, and in rear of the first bent end, or next the face-plate, the first coil formed for a link being forced outward from the former S by the entering wire, and another coiled in like manner, until the whole wire is coiled up spirally in suitable form, from which the links may be out, welded, and formed into a chain-cable. By this means the bending is performed in a very expeditious manner.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. The combination of the revolving, adjustable, alternately gripin g and sliding jaws G G, adjustable gripers H H, former S, and support or rest T, constructed substantially in the manner described, as and for the purposes set forth.
2. The combination of the jaws G G, grip ers H H, friction -rolls K K and L L with groove J, rim-piece C, face-plate It, former S, and support or rest T, when constructed and arranged to operate substantially in the manner described, as and for the purposes set forth.
3. The combination of the wing-pieces F F F F, cam P, sliding box V, jaws G G, gripers H H, friction-rolls K K and L L, spring M, rest T, groove J, shaft E, and cylinder B, mounted in frame A, when all are constructed and arranged to operate substantially in the manner described, as and for the purposes set forth.
