IMPROVEMENT IN FLv-TRAPs.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0.145,507, dated December 16, 1873; application filed November 17, 1873.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, TARLTON LANE, of Whitesburg, Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fly-Traps, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to a ily-trap, and consists in a box open at one end, and haring hinged to its lower edge a door, to the upper corners of which are secured the ends of rods, by means of which the door is operated. The rear ends of the rods are connected with the rear corners of a slide which passes through a slot in the rear side, and lits into guides at the v base of the other sides of a raised rim placed about an aperture in the top of the box, over which rim lits the base of a perforated cage, which is provided with a slide passing through one side of and sustained in guides upon the other sides of the base of the cage, thus permitting the opening or closing of its under portion. The object of the invention is to provide a convenient and effective means of catching iiies and similar insects.

The upper corners of the door B are provided with the rings e, in which are secured the eyes h on the ends of the rods E, which extend backward and are secured to eyesatthe ends of the bar F, which forms the rear of the slideH, provided with the handle t', by means of which it is operated. The slide H extends forward, passing through the slot b at the base of the rear side of the raised rim I, its sides entering the guides m, and its front edge the guide n, respectively, at base of the lateral and front sides of the rim I, which projects above the upper surface of the box A adjacent the aperture L, to receive the base p of the cage M, which is composed of wire-netting or other suitable material, and provided, near its base p, which is made of tin or other thin sheet metal, with a slot, t, through which passes the slide N, working in guides in the sides and end of the base p, which lits snugly about the raised rim I.
The slide H is thrown forward, which opens the door B, when the bait is placed upon the partition a. When a sufficient number of flies have settled upon the partition, the slide H is drawn back, closing the door B. rlhe slide N is then retracted. The flies, now attracted to the light, will rise through the aperture L into the cage, when the slide N may be closed, thereby confining them in the cage. They may now be destroyed by heat or iminersing the cage in water. The cage may then be emptied and replaced, and the operation repeated, without removing the bait.
It is obvious in this operation that, as it is only necessary to close the door B, the slide H may be dispensed with, as the rods E can be operated by moving the bar F.
The operation may be varied by the following: Remove the cage M from the rim I and replace it when the iiies have collected about the bait. By retracting the slide H, the door B is closed and the aperture L opened, whereupon, by operating the slide N, as aforesaid, the `iiies may be similarly taken.
'What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The box A, provided with the aperture L, door B, and rods E, in combination with the slide H and cage M, substantially as shown and described.
2. rlhe box A, provided with the aperture L, door B, and rods E, operated by the bar F, in combination with the cage M, provided with the slide N, substantially as shown and described.
