Another object of my invention is to provide a construction having the above described characteristics which is simple and durable and may be manufactured at slightly increased expense, as compared with similar devices now on the market and not possessing said characteristics. y j
I accomplish these objects 1n the manner hereinafter described and as illustrated vin the accompanying drawing in which Fig. l is a side elevation of a form of gas cock embodying my invention.

As shown in the drawing, the valve casing a has a common form of turning plug b therein, such as is commonly used for gas stoves and the like.
According to my invention, a rod c isl slidably mounted in the head b of the plug, at right angles to the axis thereof and is extended through a handle Z and connected at its eXtreme end to the end of the handle, preferably by a screw-thread connection. The handle i is slidably mounted on a sleeve e therein, said sleeve being rigidly secured to the head In in a recess formed therein. A coiled spring f is arranged on the rod c within the sleeve between a collar g, fixed on the rod c, and a plug /L secured handle to the normal position in which the handle is engaged with the head. A hemispherical projection c' is formedy integrally withthe valve casing and projects in close proximity to the head t with its flat `side c" next. the` latter,fand a recess 7" is formed in theprojection in alignment with the rod c, and into which the end of said rod is adapted to be moved when the handle d is held in engagement with the head' ZJ, which serves as a stop. lThe end of the rod, which is arranged to enter the recess, is somewhat rounded as shown.
l/Vith the above described construction, when the plug is in closed position, thev locking rod c will be in its normal position, as shown in Fig. 3,v so that its end portion will be located in the recess j in the' projection, one side of the recess thus `forming a shoulder for engaging the .rod so that the plug cannot be rotated and will be securely locked Vhen the valve is opened, the handle will first be drawn to the right sufficiently to withdraw the rod c from rthe' recess-j, as shown in Fior. 4. The plug will then be unlocked and free to be turned by` y its handle to Vopen position. As soon asy the v cock is unlocked, the handle will be released and will re-engage its stop. When the valve is moved .from open to'closed position, theA end of the rod will engage the surface z' of the projection by the time the valve is partly closed, so that, duringv the remainder of theV j closing movement, said surface will act as a cam face, and wlllcause the rod to be pressed back, and at the end of thismovement the rodk will be forced into the recess again by the spring, so that the plug will be locked as before described.
It will `be observedl that, lsofar as the seid arm, a looking rod reciprocally movable within said arm, said rod being attached at one end to said handle and being adapted to project beyond said stein at its opposite end, an abutment on said casing arranged to enga-ge one side of said rod to lock the stein in eiosed position and a spring arranged Within the handle to move the handie and rod to locking position.

A. cock comprising a casing having a rotatable stein therein, an arm secured to, and extending from said stem at one side thereof, a handle reciprocally movable on seid arm, a'ioeliing rod disposed Within the handle and connected thereto at one end and adapted to be extended beyond the opposite side of said stem at its opposite end, an abutment on the casing having a face' arranged 'to engage said extended end of said rod `twhen the stein is in closed position to ioel the stem in said position, a spring for hold said rod in locking position, and means ineiuding a face on said casing for holding said rod in an inoperative position as the stem is moved from open to closed position whereby said closing movement is unobstructed. y

A cock comprising a casing having a rotatable stein therein, an arm secured to and extending from said stemat one side thereof, a handle reciproeally movable on said arm, a looking rod slidably mounted Within said arm and attached at one end to 4said handle, and at 'the opposite end slidable through said stem to project beyond the opposite side thereof, a spring interposed between said arm and rod to hold the rod in projecting position, and a recessed abutment on said casing arranged to receive the end of said rod when the stem is in closed position, and having a face arranged to engage the end of the rod and retract the same as the stein is moved to Closed position and to release the rod when in said position.
