ALBERT E. BLAYN'ARD, OF SOUTHBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO AMERICAN OPTICAL COMPANY, OF SOUTHBR-IDGE, MASSACHUSETTS, A VOLUNTARY ASSOCIA- TION OF MASSACHUSETTS.
srnoraonn-raamn-coarrne 'Aoriinn Application filed June 11,
7. 0 (ZZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT E. MAYNARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at vtlouthbridge, inthe countyof or-caster and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spec- -tacle-Frame-Coating Machines, of whichthe following is a specification; 7
This invention ,:relates to improvements in spectacle making machines and .hasrparticu- ,lar reference to a novel and improved construction of machine for use in the formation of temples, eye Wires or other parts-for spec- .tacle mountings, in whichthe same are to be provided with anon-metallic coating or lacquer.
)ne of the leading objects of the present invention is the provision of a satisfactory construction of machine for use in the formation of a coating or lacquer on a large number of parts'for a completed spectacle or eyeglass frame in a simple and efficient manner.
A further object of the present invention [is the provision ofa machine which shall automatically.withdraw the articles in such manner from the coating bathtliat the surface tension and adhesive properties of'the bath will'cause a uniform coating to be deposited on the several articles.
. A further object of the present invention is the provision of a novel and improved holder for use in connection with my machinewhich will serve to engage a plurality of articles and retain them in proper relationship during the several steps in the process of coating the articles, thus facilitating the process of manufacture.
Other objects and advantages of my improvedconstruction should be readily apparent by reference to the following specification taken in connection with the accompanying. drawings, and it will be understood that I may make any modifications in the specific details of construction shown and described within the scope of the appended claims without departing from or exceeding the spirit of the invention.
Figure I represents a front view of a machine embodying my improvements.
Figure II represents a side elevation thereof.
Figure IIIrepresents a vertical sectional View through one of the racks.
1920. Serial Nb, 388,127.
In the drawings, thenumeral 1- designates the base or frame of the machine'having' rising therefrom the guides 2 which are preferably of diamond or similar shape in cross.
section and have rotating thereontheguide wheels?) of the carriage 4t. It will be noted that I have shown these guide wheels as con sisting of two at one side of the machine and an intermediate one at the opposite side,'=-,
while the carriage is in theformof a spring frame member resiliently press ng the guide wheels towards the supports so that the. car-[ riage is held in an extremely steady position with suflicient frictional engagement'to pre- This drum is loosely mounted upon the shaft 5 and held to rotate therewith when desired through a suitable clutch mechanism,-such" as the washers 8 and 9 on the shaft, the washer 8 being suitably rigidly secured on or formed integral with the, shaft'5. and the washer 9 being held against the adjacent flange 7 of the drum 6 by a spring 10 whose tension may be regulated through adjustment of the nut 11. Thepurpose-of this construction is to allow of longitudinal depres sion of the frame or, carriage 4 when desired at a rapid rate, while the clutch will hold the drum to turn ata very slow rate to wind up the carriage as the shaft 5 is rotated; any suitable mechanism, such as the large worm gear 12,,worml3 and drive pulleylt, may
be appliedto-aid in reducing the speed from the driving member, such as the motor 15 to the shaft 5 and insure themovement being at a slow but steady or non-Jerking rate.
Secured to the lower part of the carriage i are the transverse arms 16 provided with the recesses or notches 17 to receive the arms than a single coat is desired.
In operation a bath of suitable lacquer or coating material is placed in the receptacle 23 and the carriage a lowered till the articles to be coated are immersed to the desired depth, after which the shaft 5 and thus the drum 6 are rotated to slightly wind up the flexible cord or connection member 24, gradually withdrawing the articles to be coated from. the bath. This operation may be repeated any desired number of times until a coating of the desired thickness, color or flexibility has been provided. In certain instances a single coat will be found suificient, while in other cases more Also in the case of templesor other articles it may be desirable to have a slight enlargement the terminus, such as the pear tip and ball tip, or other configuration to relieve the ear.
I After the temple is thus coated it is allowed todry and harden, which may be facilitated by revolving in a centrifugal machine. The construction of this machine may be embodied in a separate application.
I would call particular attention to the advantage attained by providing a temple or "frame coated in this manner, in that it secures the strength and rigidity advantages "the size or weight of the parts and of maximum desirable appearance.
If desired, in place of a special article clamping device upon the centrifugal machine, however, to steady the articles during the entire handling operation, and to facilitate preparation of the racks away from the carriage, I may secure to one of the vertical arms 20, or any othersuitable portion of the rack, a hinged cross member 32 which be swung against the articles and the bar 21 as soon as the articles being coated have been mounted in position, being locked by a suitable fastening device as at 33, the articles being securely retained at all times in the rack irrespective of handling of the rack, and being capable of ready interchangement from one machine to another, and being impossible of separation from the rack until the locking device 33 has been released.
I claim:
1. A device of the character described including a carriage having supporting arms and a plurality of, interchangeable rack members having portions for interlocking engagement with the arms said rack members each having article receiving projections and adidtiona-l article steadying recesses aligned with the projections to steady articles mounted thereon.
2. In a device of the character described, a work holding rack comprising a main frame portion, a cross piece carried by the frame portion having a plurality of work receiving projections, a second cross piece disposed beneath the first and having a plurality of recesses formed therein corresponding in number and position to the work receiving projections of the first cross piece whereby said recesses will receive the work suspended from the projections and hold the same against transverse displacement, and a clamp member carried by the framehaving-portions overlying respectively the projections and the recesses to prevent disengagement of the work from either of said parts.
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
I ALBERT E. NIAYNARDQ Witnesses:
Anion G. 'HASKELL,
ESTHER M. LAFLER.
