DOUBLE-THROW QUICK-MAKE AND QUICK-BREAK SWITCH.

To all whom it may 0011. 061% Be it known that I, HERMAN G. PAH), of New York, in the county and State 0t New York, have invented a new and useful Double-Throw Quick-Make and Quick- Break Switch, of which the following is a specification.
One feature of my invention is a double throw switch having a quick make and quick break action in throwing the switch into and out of engagement with either one of two circuits as desired.
Another feature is such a switch having means to prevent the making of both of said circuits at the same time.
Another feature is providing such a switch with control members and with means which operate the movable contacts independently of the control members.
Another feature is a direct connection between said control members to prevent the making of said circuits at the same time.
Other features will be pointed out be low.

Base A is made of slate or other suitable material. I illustrate a double pole switch attached to said base although my invention contemplates a single pole or three pole or any other desired form.
Suitably fixed to the base are two forked brackets B and B having stop lugs b and b for a purpose hereinafter described. Upon these brackets are pivotally mounted the control members for the switch members. Each control member includes two side members, a cross-member and a handle and description of one will now be made. The control member at the left in Figure 2 comprises side member d pivoted to bracket B by screw E and side member d pivoted to bracket B by screw E. These side members all and d are connected as by screws d to cross-member D which is of insulating material and to which is suitably secured operating handle D, although my switch may be controlled otherwise than by hand. I provide a guard D of insulatmg material at the base of the handle to protect the hand of the user against the moving blades described below.

I similarly provide fixed contact terminal K to cooperate with blade G Assuming the device to be in the position shown in Figure 1 and that it is desired to make a circuit through terminal contacts 1& and K the handle D will be raised and the point of connection of the spring G with portion at will be carried to the line extending from screw E to the point of connection of the spring with portion (l compressing the spring and when said line is passed the spring acts to swing the blades Gr and Gr with a quick snap action into engagement with contacts K and K. it being understood that spring G which has similar connection with crossbar (1 and side piece (1 takes part in this quick make. Reversal of the movement oi the handle will cause disengagement of blades G and G from the contacts K and It with a snap action which gives a quick break.
Similarly handle ll is connected by side pieces h and h. springs and ii and cross'bar Ii to blades (i and G which are operated to quickly make and quickly break contact with fixed terminal clip contacts H and H each electricallv connected with binding posts which may be electrically connected with another desired circuit. the closed circuit position for blades G and (i being shown at the right of Figure 3.
It will be understood that the side members (Z, a -v h and 71 have suitable aperture to permit free movement of the springs and that while the handle members are control-- ling members yet when in moving the handle the line above described is passed in either direction then the spring actually operates the blades with a quick movement in either direction independently of the handle.
If the circuit at one side is open then the circuit at the other side may be opened or closed as desired but if the circuit is closed at one side as at the right in Figure 3 then the circuit at the other side can not be closed until the circuit at said right side is opened so that it is impossible to have the circuits made at both sides at the same time and I shall now describe a mechanism for accomplishing this result. I provide lug M on side piece (Z and if handle D is moved upwardly in Figure 3 said lug engages the periphery of side piece h at about the point 00 at which point said periphery extends outwardly from pivot E further than it does opposite said lug. Plate F is similar to plate F and is adapted to be electrically connected to the same main circuit to which plate F and binding post f are connected.
Hooks N and N are suitably connected to the base and limit the u ward movement of cross-bar G while simi ar hooks N and N limit the upward movement of cross-bar H. Downward movement of cross-bar G is limited by spring arms P and P at one side these arms being held beneath plates F and F by screws (one being shown at F and extending integrall to form spring arms P and P. whic limit the downward movement of cross-bar h.
Movement of that control member which is at the right in Figure l in a downward direction is limited by the lug M on side member It engaging lug I) on bracket B and by a similar engagement of the lug on side member h with a'lug on bracket B and movement in the other direction is limited by engagement of the side member itself with the lug M on side member (i'at about the point a: and by a similar low on side member (1 engaging side member F. I provide however cross-bars S and S of insulating material each consisting of two pieces as in the other form, the pieces of bar S being recessed to receive a ortion of blades T and T and being camped thereto by screws 8 and s and the two pieces of bar S being recessed to receive other portions of blades T and T and being clamped thereto by screws 8 and 8 A side plate T has portion 2% extending beneath the cross-bar S which is connected thereto by one of the screws 8 and a similar portion t extending beneath cross-bar S which is connected thereto by one of the screws 8 Said plate has an upward extension perforated to receive the hooked end of spring B A similar plate T is provided at the other ends of the crossbars S and S and is similarly connected to said bars and to spring R.

It will be clear that in this form the current may be thrown to one side of the device or the other as desired with a quick make and quick break snap action the operative connection between the movable switch ends i and i being permanent or tired and preventing the making of the circuit sides of the device at the same time because it the circuit is made, as at the right side of Figure 8, movement of the handle will compress the springs which will then move the blades '11 and T shifting the movable contact ends 15 and i out of engagement with fixed contacts R and it beiiore the movable contact ends t and i can engage the fixed contacts R and R there being no neutral position in this form,
An important feature is that the insulated cross-bar G, h, S and S carry the blades into and out of contact in unison which is important because otherwise one blade might make or break contact before the other or others with the result that arcing or sparininq might be caused. 7
It Wlll also be'clearthat there might be, for example, two circuits each side of the switch and in such case my invention permits making those at one side at one time but would prevent at that time the making of any circuit at the opposite side,
What I claim is:
l. A device of the character described comprising two sets of terminal contacts, each set comprising one or more of such con tacts; a handle; a switch member adapted to be electrically connected to main circuit; a spring. directly connected to said handle and to said switch member and being put under stress by said handle and when so stressed causing said member to engage either one of said sets of contacts desire with a quick snap action and to be disen gaged from either one of said sets desired with a quick snap action, the of move ment oi said switch member being nnobstructcd at all times.
2. A device of the character described comprising two sets of terminal contacts, each set comprising one or more of such con tacts; a handle; a switch member adapts to be electrically connected to a main circuit; a spring directly connected to said handle and to said switch member and being put un der stress by said handle and when so stressed causing said member to engage either one of said sets of contacts as desired with a quick snap action and to be disengaged from eitherone of said sets as desired with a quick snap action, the path of movement of said switch member being unobstructed at all times, and means to prevent the engagement of said switch member with more than one of said sets at one time.

A double throw switch comprising a set of one or more fixed terminal contacts; a switch member adapted to be electricall con nected with a main circuit and opera Is to make and break connection with said set; a second set of one or more fixed terminal contacts; a second switch member adapted to be electrically connected with said main circuit and operable make and break connection with said second set; said switch members being movable independently having operable connection which provents making of the connection between both of said switch members and their respective sets or"; contacts t e some time, each ch member being movable independently of one other break the circuit.
i. A double throw switch comprising a set of one or more terminal contacts; a switch member adapted to be electrically connected with main circuit and operable to make and break connection with said set; a second set of one or more terminal contacts; a second switch member adapted to be electrically connectediwith said main circuit and operable to make and break connection with said second set; said switch members being movable independently but having operative connection such that movement of one to engage its set will, if the other switch is engaging its set, break the latter engagement before said one switch engages its set, each switch member being movable independently of the other to break the circuit.

A device of the character descr bed comprising a set of one or more terminal contacts; a switch member adapted to be electrically connected with a main circuit; means to operate said member to engage said set with a quick snap action and to be disengaged from said set with a quick snap a"tion; a second set of one or more terminal contacts; a second switch member adapted to be electrically connected with said mam circuit; means to operate said second switch member to engage said second set with a quick snap action and to be disengaged from said second set with a quick snap action; said switch members being movable independently but having an operative connection which prevents maklng of the connection between both of said switch members and their respective sets of contacts at the same time.

A device of the character described comprising a handle; a set of one or more terminal contacts; a switch member adapted to be electricall connected with a main circuit and control ed by said handle; means to operate said switc member independently of said handle to engage said set of contacts with a quick snap action and to be disengaged from said set with a quick snap action; a second handle; a second set of one or more terminal contacts; a second switch member adapted to be electrically connected with said main circuit and controlled by said second handle; means to operate said second switch member independently of said second handle to engage said second set of contacts with a quick snap action and to be disengaged from said second set of contacts with a quick snap action; said switch members having an operative connection which prevents making of the connection between both of said switch members and their respective sets of contacts as the same time.

A device of the character described comprising a plurality of terminal contacts; a switch member carrying a plurality of contact members adapted to be electrically connected with a main circuit; means to operate said member to cause said contact members to engage said terminal contacts with a quick snap action and to be disengaged from said terminal contacts with a quick snap action; a. second plurality of terminal contacts; a second switch member carrying a plurality of contact members adapted to be electrically connected with said main circuit; means to operate said second switch member to cause its contact members to engage said second plurality of terminal contacts with a quick snap action and to be disenga ed therefrom with a quick snap action; saif switch members being movable independently but having an operative connection which prevents making the connection between the contact members of both switches with their respective contact terminals at the same time. 10. A device of the character described comprising a set of one or more terminal contacts; a switch member adapted to be electrically connected with a main circuit; means to operate said member to engage said set with a quick snap action and to disengage it from said set with a quick snap action, said operating means including a pivoted control member; a second set of one or more terminal contacts; a second switch member adapted to be electrically connected with said main circuit; means to operate said second switch member to engage said second set with a quick snap action and to disengage it from said second set with a quick snap action, said last-mentioned operating means including a pivoted control member; said ivoted control members having portions w ich cooperate to prevent making of the connection between both of said switch members and their respective sets of contacts at the same time.

A device of the character described comprislng a set of one or more fixed terminal contacts; a switch member adapted to be electrically connected with a main circuit; means for controlling said switch member including a cross-member and a pivoted side member supporting said crossmember, said side member having a perforation anda projecting portion and said means including a spring to cause said switch member to engage and be disengaged from said set with a quick snap action; a second set of one or more fixed terminal contracts; a second switch member adapted to be electrically connected with said main circuit; means controlling said second switch member including a crossmember and a pivoted side member supporting said cross-member, said side member having a perforation and a projecting portion and said last-mentioned means including a spring to cause said second switch member to engage and be disengaged from said second set with a quick snap action, said springs extending through sald perforations; and the projecting portion of each side member cooperating with the other side member to prevent the making at the same time of the connection between both of said switch members and'their respective sets of contacts.

A device of the character described comprising a set of one or more fixed terminal contacts; a switch member adapted to be electricially connected with a main circuit and operable to make and break connections with said set with a quick snap act-ion; means independent of said contacts to limit the movement of said switch member in both directions; a second set of one or more fixed terminal contacts; a second switch member adapted to be electrically connected with said main circuit and operable to make and break connection with said second set with a quick snap action; and means independent of said contacts to limit the movement of said second switch member in both directions; said switch members having an operative connection which prevents making of the connection between both of said switch members and their respective sets of contacts atthe same time.

A double throw switch comprising a handle; movable switch mechanism adapted to be electrically connected with a main circuit and controlled by the handle; means to move said mechanism independently of the handle with a quick snap action into and out of engagement with the fixed contacts of other circuits as desired; and means to prevent any but the desired of said other circuits being made at the same time.

A device of the character described comprising a handle; a set of one or more terminal contacts; a switch member adapted to be electrically connected with a main circuit and controlled by said handle; means to operate said switch member independently of said handle to engage said set of contacts with a quick snap action and to be disengaged from said set with a quick snap action; a second handle; a second set of one or more terminal contacts; a second switch member adapted to be electrically connected with said main circuit and controlled by said second handle; means to operate said second switch member independently of said second handle to engage said second set of contacts with a quick snap action and to be disengaged from said set of contacts with a quick snap action; said switch members having operative connection such that movement of one to engage its set will, if the other switch is engaging its set, break the latter engagement before said one switch engages its set.

A device of the character described comprising a handle; a set of one or more terminal contacts; a switch member. adapted to be electrically connected with amain circuit and controlled by said handle; means to operate said switch member independently of said handle to engage said set of contacts with a quick snap action and to be disengaged from said set with a quick snap action; asecond handle; a second setof one or more terminal contacts; a second switch member adapted to be electrically connected with said main circuit and controlled by said second handle; means to operate said second switch member independently of said second handle to engage said second set of contacts with a quick snap action and to be disengaged from said second set of contacts with a quick snap action; and means to prevent the making of the connection between both of said switch members and their respective sets of contacts at the same time.

A device of the character described comprising two sets of terminal contacts, each set comprising one or more of such contacts; a control member, a switch member adapted to be electrically connected to a main circuit; a spring directly connected to said control member and to said switch member and being put under stress by said control member and whenso stressed causing said switch member to engage either one of said sets of contacts as desired with a quick snap action and to be disengaged from either one of said sets as desired with a quick snap action, the path of movement of said switch member being unobstructed at all times.

A device of the character described comprising two sets of terminal contacts, each set comprising one or more of such contacts; a control member; a switch member adapted to be electrically connected to a main circuit; a spring directly connected to said control member and to said switch member and being put under stress by said control member and when so stressed causing said switch member to engage either one of said sets of contacts as desired with a quick snap action and to be disengaged from either one of said sets as desired with a quick snap action, the path of movement of said switch member being unobstructed at all times and means to prevent the engagement of said switch member with more than one of said sets at one time.

A device of the character described comprising two sets of terminal contacts, each set comprising one or more of such contacts; a control member; a switch member adapted to be electrically connected to a main circuit; a spring directly connected to said switch member and being put under stress by said control member and when so.
stressed causing said switch member to engage either one of said sets of contacts as desired with a quick snap action and to be disengaged from either one of said sets as desired with a quick snap action, the path of movement of said switch member being unobstructed at all times.

19. A device of the character described comprising two sets of terminal contacts,
each set comprising one or more of such contacts; a control member; a switch member adapted to be electrically connected to a main circuit, a spring directly connected to said switch member and being put under stress by said control member and when so stressed causing said switch member to engage either one of said sets of contacts as desired with a quick snap action and to be disengaged from either one of said sets as desired with a quick snap action, the path of movement of said switch member being un obstructed at all times, and means to prevent the engagement of said switch member with more than one of said sets at one time.

A device of the character described comprising two sets of terminal contacts, each set comprising one or more of such contacts; a handle; a. switch member adapted to be electrically connected to a main circuit; a spring directly connected to said handle and to said switch member, movement of the handle from either of its positions of rest putting said sprin under compression, said spring at a pret etermincd point in the movement of the handle, expanding and operating the switch member independently of the handle to cause the switch member to have a quick snap action both in making and in breaking the circuit.

A device of the character described comprising two sets of terminal contacts, each set comprising one or more of such contacts; a pivoted handle; a pivoted switch member adapted to be electrically connected to a main circuit, the pivots of the handle and switch member being substantially coincident; and a spring directly connected to the handle and to the switch member, the point of connection of the switch member and spring being nearer to said pivots than the point of connection of the spring and handle, movement of the handle from either of its positions of rest putting said spring under compression, said spring acting at that time to hold said switch member in its make or break position, said spring, at apredetermined point in the movement of the handle expanding and operating the switch member independently of the handle to cause the switch member to have a quick snap action both in making and in breaking the circuit.

A device of the character described comprising two sets of terminal ontacts, each set comprising one or more of such contacts; a handle; a switch member adapted to be electrically connected to a main circuit; a spring having one end directly connected to the switch member and the other directly to the handle, movement of the handle from either of its positions of rest bringing said ends nearer together and putting said spring under compression, said spring, at a predetermined point in the movement of the bandle, expanding and operating the switch member independently of the handle to cause the switch member to have a quick snap action both in making and in breaking the circuit.

A device of the character described comprising two sets of terminal contacts, each set comprising one or more of such contacts; a handle; a switch member adapted to be electrically connected to a main circuit; a bow spring having one end connected directly to the switch member and the other directly to the handle, movement of the han' dle from either of its positions of rest bringing said ends nearer together and putting said spring under compression, said spring, at a predetermined point in the movement of the handle, expanding and twisting bodily to operate the switch member indcpendently of the handle to cause the switch member to have a quick snap action both in making and in breaking the circuit.

A device of the character described comprising two sets of terminal contacts, each set comprising one or more of such contacts; a pivoted handle; a pivoted switch member adapted to be electrically connected to a main circuit, the pivots of the handle and switch member being substantially coincident; and a spring directly connected to the handle and to the switch member, the point of connection of the switch member and spring being nearer to said pivots than the point of connection of the spring and handle, said handle controlling said switch member through said spring but said spring operating said switch member independently of said handle with a quick make and a quick break, said switch member and hamdle having relatively opposite movements of rotation during the making movement and during the breakin movement.
