DEVICE UTILIZING THE TREPIDATIONS OF VEI-IEGLES.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, MARIO AUGUSTO CANALE and RICARDO FRIAS, both citizens ot thek Argentine Republic, residing at Calle Maipu 671, Buenos Aires, Argentine Republic, have invented new and useful Improvements in a Device Utilizing the Trepidations" of Vehicles, of which the following is a specification.
This' invention relates to a device intended to be placed on street cars, railway vcars or similarvehicles and wherein the trepi'dations or other displacements or movements in any direction of the running. vehicle are used l5 to' automatically move an advertising or displaying tape or any other device which is to be continually or intermittently moved or fed along. p
As will hereinafter be seen the apparatus substantially consists of one or several weights, held in position. by a corresponding number of steel springs and:` conveniently combined by means ot a pawl and ratchet wheel?. By this arrangement, any sudden displacement of the' centre in which the springs are mounted, will cause the same to oscillate under the action of the weights gravitating thereon until returned again toy the' `original position', the equilibrium of which was disturbed by the displacement.
Ity willV he evident that as the vehicle is running, either on railsor otherwise, more or less" considerable displacements Or vibrations will occur at every moment and in consequence the weights, owing to the particular manner in which they lare arranged, will continuously be caused,l tooscillate. The springs which support said weights, by operating after thei manner of levers, will impart a rotary motion to the toothed wheel from which, motion, may bel transmitted by means of any u'sualy gear, to the device to be operated.
For the better understanding of this description, illustrative drawings have' been annexed thereto, whereinc-f Figure 1 shows a front elevation, par tially in section, of an advertising device, automatically operated by the apparatus in accordance withy this invention.
Figure 2 is a plan view of the oscillatory operating device, shown with the tape removed therefrom.

In said drawings, 1 indicates a central bloclr or bracket whereinby means of the screws 2 are securely mounted the springs 3, to the free yends of which are secured thek oscillatory weights 4i. To` each of saidy springs is conveniently securedl a `tooth 5 which operates on a toothed vwheel 6. This latter rotates on a centre 7 and is provided with a bevel gear 8, in engagement with a y pini-onor' similar shape 9, This pinion is f mount-ed on the axle 11 ot a counterweighted 65 arm 10 and when rotated by the rotation of4 pinion 9 operates by means of the axle 11 the wheel provided with lateral teeth 12. The arm 10 carries a cross arm 13 through which the end 17 of lever 18 projectsand has a pro` truding central part, to form the notches` 14 at either side of the protruding partV into which notches respectively the pressure roller 15 urged by the spring 16 fits when arm 10 is moved to corresponding positionl by the end 17 of the lever 18 which oscillates ona iulcru-m 19, being counterbalancedby a suitable contracting spring. Thev lever 18`is. i provided with a projection having notches 2O with which engages thepressure roller 21 under the action of the spring 22,! for the purpose of holding the said lever engaged in the position required. Said lever 184 is movable in a guide sector 23 and carries at its end a projection 2li with `which engages'e5 langesor flaps 25, arranged in opposite directions, one on each end of the advertising tape 2o. By this means, when the tape reaches the liap' in its circulatory travel, 'in one direction, the :flap at this pointbe'c'omes 90 engaged with the projection 2i and causes the lever 18 to travel through halt a stroke, after which, under the action oi' they spring 22, it will assume its definite position, thaty is to say, with reference to Figure 2, it will be carried from the position A to the position B and vice versa.
The movement of the lever 18, on account of being combined with that of the cross arm 13, moves the arm 10 so as to cause the gear 12 to engage with one or the other of the pinions 27 and 28, mounted on their respective axles 29 and 30, and thereby im-v part motion to the bevel gearsv 31 and 32. The rollers 33 and 34 on which is wound the 105 advertising tape 26, carry on one of their ends a bevel pinion 35 and 36, respectively, while the opposite end is formed by a simple pivot. F or the purpose of facilitating the insertion and withdrawal of said rollers, 110
the bearings 37 and 88 are constructed ot two parts, one of them, 39, being operated upon by a spring a0 so as to cause the same to join the other part. By means oi this arrangement, when one roller is operated for winding the tape, the other is allowed to rotate freely.
The parts ot the oscillatory apparatus are enclosed within a casing, on whose cover l1 is secured by one ot' its ends, a spring e2 which permits ot stopping at will the oscillatory movement of tl e veights il, or, what is the same, the operation ot' the apparatus. F or that purpose, the spring el@ is connected by means of the link itil, to the arm lit, held in one position or the other by means the spring 45, being operated by means or the rod 46 which projects outside the casing 11'? which contains the parts of the machine. The casing may be made ot any suitable material and size, and its outer ornamentation may be varied as desired. ln any event, the front part or wall thereof formed by a hinged door, consists ot a 'trame with a window pane 48 through whichis fully d1splayed the advertising tape.
The operation of the apparatus 1s as tollows The casing having been secured in position at any suitable place of the vehicle, any movement transverse to the direction ot travel of the same, will bring about within the casing the oscillation ot the weights ll, 'said oscillations being greatest with regard to the weight whose spring 3 occupies the position most nearly perpendicular1 in relation to the direction ot motion.
It will be readily understood that no matter how fine be the conditions of the pavement or rails, there will always exist some slight unevennesses which will cause in the car or other vehicle trepidations which in turn will be sutiicient to canse the operation of the device.
rlhe oscillation of the weights 4 will cause the teeth 5 to impart a rotary motion to the wheels 6 and 8, which latter will transmit said movement, through its engagementwith the pinion 9, to the wheel 12. According to the position ot the beam or arm 10, said wheel will engage with the pinion 27 or 28. Assuming the parts to be in the position shown in Figure 2, the wheel 12 will rotate l vthe pinion 27 which by means ot the bevel pinion 31 will operate the pinion 35 ot the roller 33 in the direction to wind the advertising tape 2G. lileanwhile, as the pinion 28 has been lett tree, the wheels 32 and 36 and with them` the roller are allowed to rotate, thereby facilitating the unwinding of the tape from the last mentioned roller. llllhen the tape or ribbon is about to arrive at its lower end, a flap .25 secured to the same, will engage with the projection 2e and raise the same, thereby causing the lever 18 to pass from the position A to the position rlhis movement will cause the extension 17 to move the slide 13 and hence the beam 10 in a. direction in which the wheel 12 will be made to engage with the pinion 28, whereby the direction of the circulation of the tape is reversed and will continue so till the iiap ot the opposite end ot the tape will cause the lever 18 to return to its original position.
ln this way, the reversal of the circulatory motion oi the tape is etlected automatically every time the same reaches one of its ends.
The lever 18 is carried to and held in one or the other ot its positions by the action exerted by the roller 21 on the piece 20. One halt of its strolre is performed by the trailing action of the tape, while the other halt through a` distance equivalent to a littleV more tnan one-halt` of its stroke, the remainder ot its movement being caused by the engagement ot the roller 15 with the corresponding recess of the piece 14.
By means ot this arrangement, an instantaneous and perfect reversal is obtained.
Having now described our said invention.I we declare that what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, ist' 1. ln an apparatus for operating advertising tapes, weights mounted on springs and adapted to vibrate therewith, pawls carried by the springs and engaging a ratchet Wheel having a bevel gear which engages .a pinion, an arm, an axle therewithin extended from said pinion to an attached toothed wheel, an arm `tulcrumed above said first arm adapted to move said rst arm to engage said toothed wheel with a gear wheel when moved in one direction and with another gear wheel when moved in an opposite direetion, arms and gear means extended from tached to rollers positioned at right angles to said arms, a curtain attached to said rollers having a flap at each end adapted to engage an extension ot the fulcrumed arm.
2. ln an apparatus tor operating advertistapes, springs having weights at their ends, a shaft, a ratchet wheel on the shaft, pawls on the springs engaging the ratchet wheels, an arm :tulcrumed above said shaft geared at one end with the ratchet wheel and carrying a gear at its other end engageable in intermittent positions with. respectively associated gears, arms and gears extended therefrom, tape carrying rollers, spindles geared with the rollers, each carrying a gear adapted to alternately mesh with the said ex- Jended l`gears7 and means actuated by the tape for swinging said shaft to bring its gear into mesh with either of the gears of the spindles.
3. In an apparatus of the character described, a plurality of springs having weights at their ends, a shaft, a ratchet wheel on the shaft, pawls on the springs engaging the ratchet wheel, a swinging and counterbalanced shaft geared to the rst shaft and enclosing an axle extending to a toothed wheel adapted to mesh in alternate positions with respective gears, the latter coacting by extended arms with gears adapted to propel the tape carrying rollers, means for operating the rollers from the gear wheels, a pivoted and spring pressed lever, and means on the said tape ,for moving the said swinging shaft by movement of said pivoted levers.
4. In an apparatus of the character described7 a pair of gears to be driven, a swinging and counter-balanced shaft geared at one end to a ratchet wheel, springs having teeth engaging said ratchet wheel and oscillating weights for causing the teeth to operate the ratchet wheel, and means for swinging said shaft to bring its gear alternately into and out of mesh with the gears to be driven.
5. In an apparatus of the character described, gears to be driven, a swinging and counter-balanced shaft having a gear at one end for alternately meshing with the saidk gears, springs having weights at' their ends and mounted to oscillate, means for operating the shaft from the springs, a pivoted and spring pressed lever, means for swinging `said shaftfrom its lever, and a tape holder tions by the movement of a fulcrum arm,`
said arm being spring pinioned in alternate positions and having an extended end engageable with flaps on the advertising tape, said swinging shaft geared at one end to a ratchet wheel enga-ged `by teeth attached to weight actuated springs.
