rear rolls 22 will be swung downwardly about the axis of the rock sha-tt away from the platen, and the bars 34 carrying the` hooks 36 will be swung sin'iultaneously downwardly against the action ot spring about the kaxis of the front teed roll shafts until ythese hooks engage the topside of `the rock-shaft; and then further rotation of the iocloshaft in thesame direction will swing arms 19 and the' rear rolls :'i 22 fartherl from the platen and cause the lugs. 37 to continue to press'upon the upper sides of the. end-bars 34 and thus, in the manner of a knuckle-joint, swing simultaneously down the forward ends of said bars and take the front rolls away from the platen, said bars swinging in unison with the armsy 19 about the axis of the rock shaft, the parts being held in this off position by the stoptace 40 of the release lever, as shown in Fig. 5.
It will be observed that all the feed-rolls are normally held against the platen by the Wiring-means which forces pressure-bars 43 upvf'ardlygthis spring-means in the pres ent instanceis a single spring 45, but it will be understood that the arrangement for this' purpose shown may be greatly varied without departing from the lpresent invention. It will be observed further that each pair oi' eed-rolls, whether frontor rear, may yield away from the platen without releasing the remaining rolls, thereby enabling the rolls to automatically compensate for variations in the platen surface as well as for variations in the thickness of paper. It'will be seen also that the construction described ensures alineinent between the axes o't both the t'ront and rear feed-roll-shai'ts and the surface of the platen, while at the same time all undesirable floating action of the feed-rolls is entirely avoided.
In the modification s liown in, Figs; 12, 13 and 14, it will be observed that instead of the hook 36 I connect each ofthev bars 34 to the rock-shaft by means of ,a pair ot' upy standing ears 52 adapted to fit between the arch-members 24, these ears lbeing provided with holes through which the rock-shaft 1S `extends and these holes being vertically elongated to permit the necessary lost-motion or play between the bars 34 and the rock-shaft. i

In the modiiication shown in Figs. 15 and 16, the hooks 36 are employed, but the vertical limitation ot movement of the bars 34 is obtained by providing the depending' end of the hook with lateral lugs 53 which engage under the arch-members 24; whilein the iorm of device shown in Figs. 17 and 18, the upward movement of the rear-ends of the bars is restricted by means of a lug 54 extending rearwardly far enough to engage the under side of the arch-member 24.v It will be observed from the foregoing that the losteinotion knuckle-joint connection between the rear ends ot the bars 34 and the actuating rock-shaft may be greatly varied without departing from the spirit of my invention.

In a typewriting machine, arplaten carriage, a platen rotatably mounted onfthe carriage, tandem feed roll shafts, rolls on saidshafts. a cast-off rockV shaft journalled on the carriage, a pair of members pivot-ally held to said rock shaft supporting the rear roll shaft at their forward ends, a pair of members engaging under the first pair of members and supporting the front roll shaft at their forward ends and having their rear ends bent to form downwardly facing hooks through which the rock shaft extends, and means on the rock shaft interlocked with the rear roll shaft supporting members to permit the same to have a limited pivotal movement on the rock shaft whenl the rock shaft is stationary and to lock the same to the rock shaft when the shaft is rotated. 16. In a typewriting machine, a platen carriage, a platen rotatably mounted on the carriage, tandem feed roll shafts, rolls on said. shafts, a castoif rock shaftjournalled on the carriage, a. pair of members pivotally held to said rock shaft supporting the rear roll shaft at their forward ends, a pair of members engaging under thel first pair of members and supporting the front roll shaft at their forward ends and having their rear ends bent to form downwardly facing hooks through which the rock shaft extends, means on the rock the rear roll shaft supporting members to permit the same to have a limited pivotal movement on the rock shaft when the rock shaft is stationary and to lock the same to the rock shaft when the shaft is rotated, means on the carriage loosely engaging under the front roll shaft supporting members at points intermediate the front and rear rolls, and a spring for pressing said means upwardly against said members.
