Following a subsequent starting of the machine, shoe rclamping and supporting devices 6 are swung inwardly against the shoe at its opposite sides and either immediately or following a second period of rest in the cycle of operations, overlaying and fastening devices are moved inwardly at the toe end and at the opposite sides, the grippers being tripped bythe inward movement of these devices to cause them to release the upper and the tacks or equivalent fastenings being nally driven to secure the margin of the upper in place.
l Only the devices for overlaying and fastening the upper at the sides are shown in the accompanying drawings, these devices comprising side arms 8 which are mounted to swing laterally of the shoe about supporting bearings 10. Mounted on the lower ends of theV arms 8 are overlaying wiper Vplates 12 which are supported under tack carrying blocks 14 in such manner as to permit them to-tip upwardly and downwardly and also to yield backwardly against the resistance of the shoe materials. The outer ends of these plates are curved upwardly over rolls 16 which are mounted on spring plungers 18 and are pressed upwardly against the curved outer ends of the plates to. hold the plates with their upturned inner ends normally in a downwardly inclined and advanced position. The wiper plates are thus arranged to engage the shoe below the edge of the sole or insole while the upper is still held by the grippers and, as the arms 8 are advanced, to wipe the upper with firm pressure over the edge of the insole and inwardly from the edge. During this operation the wiper plates may yield upwardly and backwardly under the control oi the spring Vplungers 18, as shown in Fig. 2. In the continued movement, of the arms, the grippers are tripped to cause them to re lease the upper, whereupon the decreased resistance permits the spring plungers 18 to react and to wedge the wipers farther inwardly while forcing their inner ends downwardly against the shoe with substantial pressure. With the parts thus positioned the tacks are driven to fasten the margin ofthe upper in place.
The tacks may be fed to the tack blocks 14 in a well-known manner, as illustrated in said prior patent, and as thus positioned in the blocks are operated upon by drivers 20 whiehvare mounted on driver bars 22 slidably supported on the arms 8 and connected at their upper ends'to spring operated driver arms 24. The driver bars 22 are provided with shoulders 26 (Fig. 8) which are engaged by the edges 28 of slides 8O to uphold or lock the driver bars normally against the pressure of the arms 24. The slides 30 are mounted on a bracket plate 82 which is pivotally supported on a shaft 34, and are connected by means of gear segments 36 to a slide bar 88 whereby movement is imparted at a definite time in the cycle to the slides 30 to withdraw their edges 28 from under the shoulders 26 and permit the driver bars to be operated to drive the tacks. Subsequently, in the return of the parts to starting position, the bracket plate 82 is swung downwardly and then upwardly, the slides 30 being in the meantime. returned to their outer positions to cause them to engage under the shoulders 26 and to lift the driver bars in preparation for the operation of the machine upon another shoeA For more detailed information with respect to the construction and mode of operation of the parts as thus far described, reference may be made to said prior McFeely patent.
As in prior constructions, the slide 38 and its connected mechanism are further utilized as means for swinging the toe and side arms inwardly to overlay the margin of the upper and to position the tackers in operative relation to the shoe. For the purpose of thus operating the side arms 8 shown in the drawings, the present invention provides novel mechanism connecting the slides 30 to the lower end portions of the arms. Pivotally mounted to swing about the same axes as the arms 8 are operating arms 40 provided between their opposite ends with lateral extensions 42 ,carrying balls 44 engaging in guideways 46 formed on the outer ends of the slides 30. these guideways being curved about the axis of movement of the plate 32 to permit the plate to swing as hereinbefore described without interru ting its connection with the arms 40. 1 t their lower ends the arms 40 are connected to the side arms 8 by toggle mechanisms each comprising a lever 48 pivoted on the arm 40 and connected at its inner end to a lever or link 50 which is pivoted at 52 ou the arm 8. A spring 54 connected to the outer end of the lever 48 tends to hold it against a stop pin 56, in which position it is substantially in line with the link 50 and co-operates with the link to provide a rigid connection between the arm 40 and the arm 8. Through these connections movement is imparted positively to the arms 8 by the inward movement of the slides 30 to operate vthe wipers and to carry the tackers into proper relation to the edge of the shoe bottom.
