embossing or printing on various types ofv goods, and more particularly to a machine specifically designed for printing or embossing leather goods, and an object ofthe invention is to provide a machine as specified which is particularly designed for stamping gold leaf lettering upon leather articles of all types, by the hot printing process,- the improved machine being designed to permit such, stamping accurately and with minimum eflort upon the part of the operator. I nother object of this invention is to provide a novel form of lever construction for moving the type carrier into type receiving or unloadin position, or into-stamping po sition, whic cooperates with the support 0 the type carrierfor locking the latter in adjusted positions and also to providemeans for electrically heating the type carrier and the type carried thereby, as heated type is necessary to obtain the best results in gold lettering or stamping on leather or analogous material.
Other objects of the invention will appear so in the following detailed description taken in connection Wlth the accompanying drawingzs wherein:
ig. 1 is a side elevation of the complete 'stampingmachine.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged front elevation of the stamping machine.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary side elevation of the machine showing the type carrier in stamping position in solid lines, and in type receiving or unloading. position in dotted lines.

' Fig. 8 is a detai section taken on the line 8-8 of Fig. 3.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the improved stamping machine comprises an article carrying table 1 which is supported by suitable supporting legs 2. A supporting armB rises from the table 1 and has a bearing 4 on its upper forward end which bearing is located over the center of the table 1 and slidably receives the reciprocatory rod 5. An operating lever 6 has its upper end pivotally connected to the upper end of the rod 5 as shown at 7 in Fig. 1 of the drawings, and the operating lever is pivotally supported from the supporting arm by a suitable suppgrt 8. The lever 6 extends downwardl neath the table and forwardly between t e sup orting le 2 thereof and has a stirrup mounts upon its lower end for receiving the foot of the operator to permit the rod 5' to be forced downwardly. A spring 10 is connected to the lever, 6 and to the table 1 for returning the lever to its normal position. and moving the rod 5 upwardly in its f. The lower end of the reciprocatory rod 5 is iding bearing 4.
forked as clearly shown at '11 providing spaced arms 12 and 12 which are pivotaliy connected by meansof a pin 13 to the upstanding bosses 14 and 14' on the type carrier 15. The type carrier 15 comprises a main body 16 which is provided with a ledge or type supporting plate 17 over which type engaging dogs 18 are mounted for move ment towards or from each other. \The type engaging do 18 are provided withthreaded ores 19 t rough w ich he feed screw 20 extends. The feed screw 2 is threaded oppositely from its center towards its end, that is one end is provided with right hand threads while the other end is provided with left hand threads to permit move ment of the dogs towards or from each other, synchronously by rotation of the feed screw. The feed screw 20 projects beyond the ends of the body 16 and has thumb nuts 21 mounted thereon for manually: rotating it. Suitable washers 22 are clamped between the wing nuts 21 and the ends oil the body it, for forming closures for the longitudinal opening in the body in which the feed screw is mounted. The arm ldofthe body 16 has an operating handle 23 pivotally connected thereto as shown at 24. The end 25 of which, is angled and extends through an opening 26 in the arm 14: and is adapted to project into anyone of a plurality of openings 27 formed in the arm 12' of the fork 11 for locking the type carrier 15 in either a vertical printing position as shown in solid lines in Fig. 3 of the drawings or in a horizontal type receiving or discharging position as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The hand gripv carrying end of the lever or handle; 23 projects at an obtuse angle from the arm 14 Figs. 5 and 8 of the drawings to facilitate operation of the lever andmovement of the type carrying member 15.
in gold letter stamping on leather, analogous material, it is necessary that the type or cut be heated to provide the proper adhesion of the leaf gold to the material being stamped and to provide for this heating of the type, an electrical heating unit 30 of any approved construction is attached to the back of the type carrier 15. The heating element 30 is incased in a suitable casing 31 and has a plug or switch structure 32 connected thereto which is adapted for connection throught he medium of a socket 33 with any suitable source of electric current su ply. The heating element 30 will heat t e type carrier 15 and any type carried thereby.
umming up, the operation of the improved leather stamping machine is as folows: the type carrier 15 is moved into its horizontal position as indicated in Fig. 3 of the drawings, and the desired type is placed upon the supporting plate 1.7 after which the gripping dogs 18 are adjusted to pro erly grip the type and hold it in place. e hand lever 23 is thenanoved upon its ivot 24 to release the typecarrier 15 and t e type carrier is swung, through the medium of the handle 23 into its vertical printing position as shown in solid lines in Fig. 3. of the drawings in which position, it is locked by means of the an led end 25 engaging in the uppermost opening 27 as shown in Fig. 6 of the drawings. The electrical current to the heating element 30 is then turned on and when the type carrier 15 and the type carried thereby is heated to the proper degree,
as clearly shown in J inaaaai the foot lever 6 is operated to force the type carrier 15 downwardly for impressing the letters or the like, carried by the type upon the material to be stamped. The usual process of gold letter stamping is employed in connection with the above operation.
