EMPROVEMENT IN BATTERY-GUNS.

Specification forming part ofLettere Patent No. 145,224, dated DecembtrQ, 1873; application filed November 25, 1873.

To all Whom yit may concern:

le it known that I, Lieut. ALONZO E. MIL- 'rinonn, of First United States Artillery, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Guns; and I do hereby declare the following to be a t'ull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reterence heilig hadto the accompanying drawings, which form part of this speeiiieation.

My invention relates to certain new and uset'ul improvements in guns for use in times of war; and consists in the combination of deviees and appliances hereinafter specified and claimed, wherein, in the drawings- Figure l is a view in plan of my invention, and Fig. L a view in side elevation.

A is an inner ce1itrallvlocated gun, of larger caliber than the other barrels, I3, and may be either a breech or muzzle loader, or both. B are. exterior smaller barrels, arran ged concentrirally around the larger barrel A. The barrels ll are supported by collars C C', embracin g their ends, and r meiving their support from the gun A, upon which the collars C U are constructed to revolve. Dis a case, containing the tire-lock ot' the outer barrels B, and also inelosing suitable mechanism for feeding the barrels ll, revolving them past the iirelocii, and discharging the cartridge-shells therefrom at'ter tiring, which mechanism, inelosed in the ease l), will form the subieet-matter oi' another application.

As will be seen, the whole gun mechanism is supported bythe centrally-located gun'A. This gun is provided with four trunnion-shaped supports, li] and E', situated at the muzzle and breech, respectively, that lit into seats formed within or upon cheek-plates F. These cheekplates F, in turn, are provided with a set of trunnions, G, for mounting the whole structure upon the cheek-plates of a gun-carriage.

Theadvantages of this invention are, brieiy, as follows: It combines a long-range gun, A, with 'the revolving short-ran ge barrels B, thus combining with a gun possessing all the advantages oi' the Gatling the additional advantages of a long-range, large-caliber gum from which may be red shot, shell, grape or shrapnel, canister, Ste., under circumstances where the ordinary Gatling would be powerless.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination, with a single central barrel, A, oi' a series of complete barrels, B, of smaller caliber, constructed and adapted to revolve around the central barrel A, substantially as described.

2. The combination described, of a central barrel or gun and a frame or cradle forv supporting the gun at or near its extremities, so that a series of independent barrels may be r 1anged around said central gun, as set forth.
