To all whom t may concern Be it known 4that I, GEORGE SLiDER, a citi! zen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inGearing; and I' do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such will. enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention, relates to' gearing. Y
Among the objects ofmy invention are lo produce gearing such as is suitablefor driving the pintle of oneiof a pair of 'rolls 'such are are usedin wringeis forming a part of al washing machine.'
To produce gearing suitable for rotating To produce gearing for rotating a pintle at` will in either direction and combining said gearing with indexing mechanism whereby the position in space of said pin! tle'may be varied as desired.` l
These and otliei objects of my invention will become apparent in the'following specification reference beingfhad to the accom-- vpanying drawings, and the means by which saidobjects are effectuated will be definitely pointed out in the claims.

The cap 10 and casting 27 are provided with housings 12 and 13, respectively, for the pintle 16, and bevel gears 14 and 15 are revolubly mounted upon said shaft adjacent said h ousings 12 and 13, respectively.
The extremities of a squared portion 17 on the pintle 16 serve, in conjunction with the faces of the housings 12 and 13, to prevent undue end play of the gears 14 and 15. The gears 14 and 15 are provided with clutch members 18 and 19, respectively, and a cooperating clutch member 20 is slidably mounted upon the squared portion 17. The member 20 is provided with clutch teeth 21-21 and 23-23 which alternately engage with the clutch members 18 rand '19, respectively, in Order to revolve the piiitle 16 in 4either direction. The member 2O is provided with a groove into which the shifting pin 24 projects,`said pin being provided with a cylindrical portion which is revolubly mounted in a bearing provided in the shifting lever 25.` The shiftinglever 25 is `rigidly attached to the shifting shaft 29 and is pressed against the lever 25 by the spring 35.`
The gears 14 and 15 mesh with the bevel gear 36, the latter being rigidly secured upon the upper end of the driving shaft 37 and revolving in the direction of the arrow shown in Fig. 1 which drives said gears in the directions ofthe arrows shown in said figure.
The shaft 37 is revolubly mounted in the' housings 38 and 39 provided in the index arbor 40 and the latter is secured to the casting 27 by bolts such as 41.
The arbor 40 is provided with cylindrical portions which are revolubly mounted in the bearings 42 and 43 provided in the index sleeve 44 and the latter is secured by bolts such as 45 to the framework 46 of .the washing machine. The arbor 40 is provided with Ya plurality of index holes such as 47 of which The index pin L1S is slidably mounted in the boss at) and is normally pressed into engagement with one of the holes f-lf' by the spring 50, an index handle 51 serving to remove said pin from engagement with one of the holes 17 when desired.
The pins 4S and holes '-17 are made tapering so that the pressure of t-he spring 5() will prevent relative movement of the arbor t() in the'sleeve 44.
The operation of my improved gearing-:is as follows:-
The handle being' in the position shown in Figs. 1, and 2, the lever25 and the member 2() will be inthe position shown in Fig. 3 and the clutch teeth2l-2l and 23-23 will be disengaged from the clutch members 18 and 19. then the handle 30is in said position and the shaft 3T is revolved inithe direction of the arrow in vlfig. 1, the gears 14 and 415 will be revolved in the direction of the arrows in said figure, but no rotation ofthe pintle 16 Will result.

When it is `desired to revolve the `pintle 16 in the opposite direction the handle 30 is to bemoved lfrom the position represented bythe dotted line 53m Fig. 3to the posi tion represented by the dotted line 54 in said figure, thus bringing the teeth 23-23 into Iengagement with the member 1T. Then the handle is in said position, the face 32 of the lever 25 will be engaged by the detent 31 and the teeth 23-23 will beheld in engagement `With the member 19.
When it is desired to change the angular position of the pintle 16 with reference to the index sleeve 44, the operator vpulls the handle 51 outwardly, thus removing the pin 48` from the corresponding index hole 47. The casting 27 can then be turned to any'devsired position and lWhen the handle 51 is released the pin 48 will enter the corresponding. index hole and lock said casting in .po- `sition.
Thus, it will be seen that I provide a simple, cheap and efective combination. for
driving Wringer rolls in either direction or for terminatingtheir rotation at Will, and
also for holding the vvringer in any angular position with., refe-rence to thedevice by which it is. supported. l
