Be it known that I, NORTON lV. CHAPMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Guilford, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Manicure Buffers; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this appli cation.

This invention relates to improvement in manicure buffers, and particularly to buffers of the type in which the leather polishing surface is secured in place by tucking its edges into a groove formed in the bufferback. Leather used for this purpose varies in thickness, so that, if the groove is too narrow, it is diflicult to insert the edge of the leather, or if it is too wide, the leather will not stay in place. The object of this invention is to provide a buffer with an annular opening for the edge of the leather, with yielding means for contracting the said opening, and the invention consists in the construction as hereinafter described and particularly recited in the claims.

In carrying out my invention, I employ a buffer-back 10 of the usual'conformation and provided with a handle 11. This back is used in connection with a base 12 corresponding in form to the inner face of the back, and the edge of the back is cut away to form an annular slot 13. Between the back and the base is a plate 14:, the edge of which is formed with a series of slits 15 forming a series of fingers 16, the edges of which are rolled over to form a rounded surface 17, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. This plate, in being located between the base and the back, is secured in place by a screw 18, which also unites the base to the back. On the under face of the base is the usual pad 19, and this is covered by a strip of chamois, or other suitable material, the edges of which are tucked inward between the fingers 16 and'the edge of the back 10, and these fingers are sufli ciently yielding to adapt themselves to various thicknesses of material. and as the edges of the leather are gradually tucked in, they will be held in place.

Instead of employing the plate 1 1, I may use a strip 21, which surrounds the adjacent edges of the base and back, and roll the edges of this strip into a slot 22 corresponding to the slot 13. The lower edge 23 of the strip may be turned into a groove formed for it in the edge of the base; or, if preferred, the strip may be folded longitudinally and its edges rolled to form bearing pomts 24 and 25, as shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings; or. instead of providing metal grip at the edge of the buffer. the base may be formed with a longitudinal groove 26 to receive a longitudinally-bowed metal spring 27, which will be secured in place by screws 28, which permit the base to move with relation to the buffer-back, as shown in Fig. 6 of the drawings, and, in this case. the edge of the upper face of the base is cut away to form an annular slot 29, which performs the same function as though the slot were formed in the buffer-back. In this construction, as the leather is tucked in between the adjacent faces of the base and back. the spring 27 will yield to allow the base and back to slightly separate but firmly grip the edge of the leather when it is tucked in between them.

It is therefore obvious that various changes may be made in the details of con-' struction without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention.

I claim:

1. A buffer comprising a base, a back permanently secured. thereto, an annular slot formed between the edges of their adjacent faces, a yielding gripping means in said slot, and a cover adapted to have its edges entered between one of the members and said gripping means, which yield to permit the cover to be so entered.
