IRVING GOODMAN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BLooMEns.
Application filed June 18, 1921.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, IRVING GOODMAN, a citizen of the United, States, residing at New York city, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Bloomers, of which the following is a specifica tion.
This invention relates to bloomers for use .10 more especially by misses and ladies, in connection with athletic pursuits and the object of the invention is to provide a bloomer Which will be unusually neat in appearance and will, in effect, appear to the casual observer as a skirt.
. The further object of the invention is to provide a bloomer which will in no wise bind or restrict the movements of the wearer and so constructed as to obviate the tendency of bloomers, as now made, to tear or rip, particularly in: the crotch portion thereof.
With this and other objects in mind, the present invention contemplates the incorporation into a bloomer of a gusset, positioned in the crotch of the bloomer and of a square or diamond shape and of suflicient size so that when the bloomer is in place on the wearer with the bottom leg portions tucked in in the usual manner, the gusset will sag and provide an uninterrupted line from the bottom of one bloomer leg to the other, so that the bloomer will have the appearance of a skirt although possessing all the prerequisites and advantages of bloomers as generally constructed.
The bloomer made in accordance with this invention is, in effect, devoid of a crotch portion as usually understood. The triangular or square gusset which forms the crotch of the bloomer being of sufficient size so as to hang free from the body and produce a closed skirt effect.
The other features of the invention will be apparent in the following specifications, when read in conjunction with the accompanying drawings and appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, I have illustrated one practical form of the present invention, but it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the construction shown, which is advanced purely for the purpose of illustration.
In said drawings, Figure 1, is a front elevation of a pair of bloomers laid out fiat defined crotch Serial No. 478,480.
and constructed in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2, shows the bloomers of the present invention in position on a wearer.
Figure 3 is a face view of the preferred form of crotch gusset employed in themaking of the bloomers. 1
Referring to the drawings, the bloomer is shown as embodying two leg sections, 1 and 2, which are united by a front seam, 3, and a similar rear seam not shown. The top of the leg sections is provided with suitable waist band, 4, andthe bottom of each leg section is adapted to be normally collapsed by means of an elastic tape or otherwise. Preferably, gather the upper portions of the leg sections by a plurality of pleats, 5, to impart the proper waist measurement to the garment and to give the desired fullness to the leg sections. The lower central portions of the front and back covering portions which lie adjacent the crotch of the wearers body will hereinafter be known as crotch portions. The foregoing description, along with the garment shown is advanced in order that the invention may be more clearly understood. But, the present invention relates particularly to the formation of the crotch portion of the garment and the manner of making the other portions thereof is not necessarily restricted to the formation of the particular construction discussed.
hen making a garment in accordance with this invention, instead of sewing up the inseams of the leg sections to form awell portion as heretofore, I insert in the crotch of the garment a relatively large gusset 6, shown in detail in Figure 4c. This gusset is preferably made diamond shaped, though if desired, it may be square. In making the garment the leg. sections are provided with in seams for a short distance only from the bottoms of the legs and for the remaining distance the leg sections which would be normally united in an in seam are seamed along the elges of the diamond shaped gusset 6, in seams 7, so that when seams are completed the garment will appear as shown in Fig. 1.
The gusset 6, is made relatively large so that when the garment is laid out-fiat as shown in Figure 1, the transverse fold of the gusset will come relatively near the lower ends of the legs. When said garment is donned by a wearer and the bottoms of the legs tucked in ment to lift in the crotch and become uncomfortable and cause chafing. The garment will hang free from the waist of the wearer and there will be no tendency of the material between the limbs to bunch, so that the garment will be cooler and more com fortable than bloomers as heretofore constructed with well defined crotch portions. As the bloomer hangs free there will be no tendency of the same to cling to the body at any point except the waist line where it is held in close conformity therewith by the waist band, 4- The bloomer has been found usset 6, willsag so that tion or ripping of the in ractice to be unusually desirable particu arly insofar as the seams are concerned and no matter how far the limbs of the wearer are spread during violent exercise, there will be no tearing of the crotch porseams.
Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A pair of bloomers consisting of front and rear body covering portions, each provided with an inverted V' shape crotch portion, and a substantially large diamond shape gusset folded upon itself to form triangular front and rear portions, the edges of said front and rear triangular portions being connected to the edges of said front and rear crotch portions with the folded portion of said gusset extending between the leg portions of said bloomers and at approximately the knee portions thereof.
In testimony whereof I have signed the foregoing specification.
IRVING GOODMAN,
