BGBl-ERT 1E. VICGAHEY, OF ALEXANDR, VIRGINIA.
SELF-LOCKNG ANGL'ECOCK.
application inea January 2e, 199.1. semi no. rainer.
T al? whom it 'may concern,
Be it known that l, Ronnm E. MGGAHEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alexandria, in the county of Alexandria and State of Virginia, have invented cer. tain new and useful Improvements in Self- Locking nglecocks, of which the followinir is a specication.
My said invention relates to a self locking angle cock of the type shown in my prior Patent 1,351,391, August 31, 192O-,7upon which the present invention is an improvement.
It is an object of my invention to provide a self locking device of the character described in said patent, with its handle normally positioned under the train pipe, said device comprising parts adapted to be applied to angle cocks of the types at present in common use. 1n this way am enabled to secure the benefits of my invention without discarding as an entirety angle cocks such as are now used` but may replace only a portion thereof with my improved device.
A further object is to provide signalling means to indicate that a cock in the train not been opened.
Referring to the accompanying drawings which are made a part hereof and on which similar reference characters indicate similar parts,
Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section of my improved device, showing "the valve open,
lhgure 2, an elevation partly in. section showing the valve in closed position, and
Figure 3, a section on line 3-3 of Figure 2.
ln the drawings reference character indicates the body of an angle cockof any conventional or approved type containing a rotary valve or plug 11; the body being attached to the train pipe 9. lnterposed between the body and the plug 11 is a sleeve 12 having a lower flange 13 beveled at 13 to engage the lower edge of the cock and prevent rotation of the flange and a screw threaded extension 1st at its upper end on which is a nut 15 to hold the sleeve in place. tlppositely placed openings 16 in the sleeve permit the passage of air through the same from one section to another of the train pipe. llfithin the sleeve 12 the rotary plug 11 is held in place by a. nut 18 engaging internal threads at the lower end of the sleeve,
A spring 19 is preferably interposed between thenut and the plug to hold the same yieldably in place and permit easy operation.
A handle 20 for turning the plug has forks 21 pivoted at 22 on a collar 23 secured to an extension of the plug as by a cross pin 241. As in my patent the handle is adapted to be locked in open or closed position of the cock and when the cock is open the handle extends underneath the train pipe and parallel thereto; Holes 25 in the flan e 13 co-act with a single pin 26 on the han( le lock the same in adjusted position.
The plug 11 has a transverse aperture 27 adapted in open position to register with the. ports 16 of the sleeve 12 and passages in casing 1() to permit passage of air through the cock. A small air passage 28 passes diagonally through the plug in a direction transverse to that of passage 27 and leads to a passage 29 opening at the bottom of the plug. This passage serves a double purpose. 1n the first place it provides a means whereby when the two cocks between cars are closed the pressure in the connecting tube between the cars will become exhausted by bleeding through the passage and thus prevent accidents to trainmen due to the kick of the connecting'tube when disconnected from the train pipe. Also, if a plug on an added car is accidentally left in closed position in making up the train the air when applied will whistle or hiss in coming out of this passage and thus give warning to the trainmen that a part of the train is not connected up with the train pipe.
Vhile l have shown and described a preferred form of my invention l do not limit myself thereto as modications thereof will occur to those skilled in the art. rThe true scope of my invention is indicated by the appended claims.
Having thus vention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent. is:
1. An angle cock comprising a body having an upwardly tapering opening` a turning plug. a sleeve and the body, said sleeve being closed above the plug and provided with means for drawing the sleeve upward in said tapering opening and also provided with means for sustaining the parts in operative position. a handle beneath the train pipe and extending parallel thereto in the open position of the fully described my said ininterposed between the plug 11H3 3. The combination of a train i )e an an-- gie cock therefor comprising a body having an upwardly tapering opening, a sleeve in the opening, a nut mounted onthe sleeve for securing the sleeve in position, a plug within the sleeve, means on the sleeve for holding it in the body and for holding the plug in the sleeve and a handle below the train pipe for turning the plug, said handle extending under the train pipe when the plug is closed, substantially as set forth'.
Il. An angle cock having a body with an upwardly tapering opening, a sleeve therein closed at its upper end and having a threaded extension, a flange at the lower end of the sleeve, a nut on the extension, a turning plug in the sleeve, and means carried by the lower end of the sleeve to Contact with the down- `ward extension of the angle cock to hold the sleeve in place, substantially as set forth.
An angle cock comprising a body having an opening, a sleeve therein having at its lower end a flange with a beveled portion engaging the downward extension of the angie cock to prevent rotation of the sleeve and .a turning plug in the sleeve, substantially as set forth.
6. An angle cock comprising a body having an opening, a sleeve therein having at 'its lower end a flange with a beveled portion 'engaging the downward extension of the -angie cock to prevent rotation of the sleeve, a turning plug in the sleeve, a nut engaging internal threads at the lower end of the sleeve, a spring between the nut and a shoulder on the plug. a transverse passage in the plug, a longitudinal passage in the plug and a diagonal passage extending from the longitudinal passage a'nd conneeting the saine to the outer end of the angle cock when the plug is elosed, substantially as set forth.
T. n angle rook comprising a body having` an upwardly tapering opening, a turning plug, a sleeve interposed between the plug and the body and provided with a screw-threaded extension, a nut for engagenient with the threads and adapted to bear against the body of the cork whereby the sleeve may be drawn up into the tapering opening, and means for operating the turning plug within the sleeve, substantially as set forth.
8. An angle cock comprising a body having an upwardly tapering opening. a turn- .ing plug, a sleeve interposed between the plug and the body andl provided with a screw-threaded extension, a nut for engagement with the threads and adapted to bear against the body of the cock whereby the sleeve n'iay be drawn up into the tapering opening, said sleeve having at its lower end a ange with a beveled portion engagingthe downward extension of the angle cork whereby rotation of the sleeve is prevented.` substantially as set forth.
9. The coinbinationv'ith a train pipe of an angle cock therefor comprising a body. a conical plug tapering upwardly. a handle for turning the plug and lot-king it in open or Closed position and adapted in locking position to extend under the train pipe. a sleeve supporting the plug and having means for contacting with the body to prevent rotation and other means for securing the sleeve to the body, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof. l have hereunto set my hand and seal at lllasliington, District of Columbia, this twenty-second day of January, A. D. nineteen. hundred and twentyone.
