Description

rl. TORRENT. Saw-Mill Dogs.
Patented Nov. 25,1873.
UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
JOHN TORRENT, OF MUSKEGON, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO STEARNS MANI'E FAGTURING COMPANY OF ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA1 IMPROVEMENT IN SAW-MILL DOGS.
Specification formn g part of Letters Patent No. 145,031. dated November 25, 1873 application filed October 15, 1873.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN TORRENT, of Muskegon, in the county of Muskegon and State of Michigan, have invented `a new and useful Improvement in Saw-Mill Dogs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making a part of this specification, in whichbox or case, which carries them so that they,
shall be out of the way, and still leave such dogs as are above, or maybe raised above, the top of the cant or log in position for engaging the same. The box or case in which the latchdogs are hung has a vertical motion, which is imparted to it by means of a lever or other like device.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my improvement, I will proceed to describe its construction and mode of operation.
The ordinary head-block of a saw-mill carriage is represented at B, and the sliding knee at D, the standard part of which is marked D. By means of a doveta-iled joint, as indicated at d, or other equivalent device, I conneet a vertically-moving box or case, H, with the standard, so that it may be raised or lowered thereon by means of a lever, h, and arm h. Inside the box or case H, I pivot a series of dogs, a,- each of the form substantially as indicated by full lines in Fig. 2, and by dotted lines in Fig. 1, and in such position that, when free to assume their natural position, the points or teeth al of the dogs will project beyond the forward face of the box H. The rear ends a2 of these dogs, back of their pivoting-points s, are heavier than the hooked ends, so as to preponderate in weight, and when not otherwise acted on, each resting on a suitable stop, e, will hold the points or teeth al of the dogs outside the face of the box, and in proper position for engaging the cant m. At the same time the rear ends a2 of the dogs are free to move upward through ajshort space, as at e', sufficiently to bring the points or teeth a inside the face of the box H. Any desired number of these dogs, one or more, may be inserted in each box or case H.
In operation, the log or cant m is rolled onto the head-blocks, and such dogs as it may strike against will, in the manner described, be shifted in position, so that their points or teeth will come inside the box or case H. The operator, then raising the lever h, raises the box or case H such distance as may be neces sary, so that when the`leveris dropped or forced down one or more of the dogs above the cant or log, at rest against the standard, may be brought down and forced into the upper face of the log, and thereby dog it securely in position. The pin c acts as a stop to prevent the lever h from being thrown over to the opposite side. N
IVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The box or case H, having one or more latch-dogs, in combination with a standard, D', and lever h, substantially as described.
2. The automatically-operating dog a, havf ing a preponderance of weight back of its pivoting-point, in combination with the box or case H.
In testimony whereof I, the said JOHN TOR- RENT, have hereunto set my hand.
JOHN TORRENT. Witnesses:
DAVID D. ERWIN, SARAH E. DoNAnoE.
