In Figure IV, I have illustrated in sectional view a particular type of holder which includes a circular body portion 10' having a central opening 1.1 and further provided at one end with the spaced openings 12. From a view of the drawings it will be noted that the openings 12 are screwthreaded, whereby the tool 10 may be,
readily secured to the holder 1 after having been placed in position upon the upper face of the enlarged portion 2, it being understood that the screws 13 will be inserted up through the openings I and engaged with the threaded openings 12. In placing the toolholder 10 in position upon the adapter the pins 14, which are arranged in opposed relation with the openings 4, are adapted to fit within the openings 15 in the tool holder 10 so as to retain it in its proper centered position with respect to the adapter until the screw members 18 can be engaged within the openings of the tool holder 10. From this it will be apparent that the parts are securely held against any rotating movement during the grinding operation. As illustrated in Figure IV, this tool holder 10 is provided with a central opening, the
'tangular opening 26 which extends upper end of which is divided from the lower end by means of a circular rib 16, the upper end of said opening being adapted to receive the shank portion 17 of the lap 18, said lap being illustrated in the present drawings as of the concave type adapted to be used particularly for grinding concave lenses. In Figure VI, I have illustrated another form of tool holder which consists of an annular body member 19 having the spaced screw openings 20 arranged at diametrically opposite points on the 'lower face of the body and adapted to correspond with the openings 4 in the holder. This tool holder is also provided with the spaced openings 21 adapted to receive the pins 14 when being placed in position upon the holder so as to actively center and retain the holder in position until the screws can be engaged with the openings 20. This holder is provided with an upstanding tapering shank 22 upon which is mounted the lower extending sleeve portion '23 of the lap 24; which in the present instance is illustrated as particnlarly adapted for grinding spherical lenses.
In Figure VIII, I have illustrated still another modified form which consists of an annular body member'25 provided within its upper portion with a substantially recin through the body midway of its length and is adapted to receive a substantially rectangu lar portion 27 of the lap 28. This lap 28 is securely held in position by having the set screw 29 threaded through the wall of the holder 25 and engaged with the shank 27 of the lap whereby'the lap may be removed when desired to be replaced by a new one or one of a different size from the one heretofore placed in position in the holder. This holder 25, as illustrated in liigure VIII, is provided with the usual screw openings in the end thereof opposite the opening 26 and also provided with the pin-receiving openings 31 whereby this holder may be quickly placed in position upon the main holder 1 and securely held against movement.
In Figures X and XI I have illustrated still another modified form which consists of a sleeve'32 herein shown as adapted to be fitttd over the shank portion 22 of the holder 19, and is provided at its upper end with the substantially elongated body member 33 having a flat upper face 34 provided at one end with a stationary upstanding flange 35. It will be noted from the ill-ustration and the drawings that a lens is retained in position upon the upper face of the body member '33 by means of a detachable plate 36 which is removably secured to the end of the body opposite the flange 35 by 'means of a screw member 37 which extends through the plate 36 and is threaded into the end of the "body member 33. In order to provide against turning movement of the -p1a'te"36,=the pins 38 are provided, one
end of whichengages in suitable openings in the plate 36, while the other ends engage in suitable openings in the end of the body 35. Thus, when the plate 86 is tightened against the lens upon the body member 33,
the pins 38 will prevent any turning movement of the plate '36, thus securely holding theflens in position upon the body.
'While I have shown and described only a few of the various forms of tools adapted to be used in connection with my improved holder, it will be'apparent-that a great number of different types of lap holders may be used in connection with the main holder, and various types of laps can be used in connection with the different holders herein illustrated and described. As stated heretofore, it is the main object of my invention to provide an improved adapter for lens grinding machines whereby the different types of laps and tool holders can be readily interchanged so that all types of lenses can be readily ground upon the same machine.
I claim:
1. A tool holder for grinding machines comprising a base member having opposed sockets, one of said sockets having guide members projecting outwardly therefrom, and a tool engaging stud fitting within said socket of (the base ;member having sockets formed therein to receive the guides, said stud and base member having aligned apertures formed therein and fastening members passing through the base member and into the stud to detachably connect said parts.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a base member having a socket formed in the upper face thereof, of a tool receiving stud adapted to rest.
