' DOUCHE.
Application filed July 24,
Be it known that l, CARL EUGENE SIMS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Abilene, in the county of Taylor and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Douches of which the following is a specification.
Wly invention is an improvement in douches, and has for its object to providea douche especially adapted for the prevention and home treatment of w'omens diseases, wherein a pipe or nozzle `is provided, adapted to be interposed int@l the cavity to be treated, and having a base 'for closing said cavity, and having in connection therewith a speculum for spreading the walls of` the cavity to `insure the thorough applica` tion of the medic-al preparation..
In the drawings Figure 1 is a front elevation of the iinproved douche,
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section,
Figure 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Figure 2,
Figure 4is an end view.
In the present embodiment of the invenf. tion, there is provided a pipe or nozzle 1 of suitable cross section, and having in' connection therewith a lrelatively large base 2'which as shown7 is iianged at its margin as at 3 to strengthen the same'and reinforce the edge. That-end of the pipe adjacent to the base is closed by the base, and that end remote from the basehas a door or valve 4 connected therewith, which is adapted to be opened in a manner to be presently described when desired. i
A plunger or piston 5 is arranged within the pipe, and a rod 6 is connected with the plunger, the rod extending through the base as shown, and having a finger-piece 7 for convenience in manipulating the saine. A coil spring 8 encircles the rod between the plunger and the base, and normally acts to press the plunger toward the gate or valve 4.
Douche pipes 9 are arranged outside the pipe 1, the said douche pipes being six in number in the present instance, and they are perforated at intervals as clearly shown in Figure 1, At their outer ends, these pipes or tubes are supported by a ring 10, and at their inner end they connect with a, hollow ring 11 which encircles'the inner 'end of the pi e.
iin intake tube 12 extends from the pipe 11 through the base, and may be connected hood'by means of a pipe ring.
1920. serial No.' 398,642;
inal fluid.' A hood 13 of rounded form, is arranged lon the inner face of the base, the saidI `hood yencircling the pipe 1 and-the douche tubes 9, and-this 'hoodl is adapted to receive the outflowv fromthe cavity being irrigated,l and the fluid escapes from the said 14 which extends throughthe base.
A series of speculumfblades 15 is c-onnected with a ring 416 `which isfsupported by the douche tubes nearthe ring 11,1 and 'within the hood, each blade ,being hinged to the ring. A second ring 17 is mounted t0` slide on the pipe l., and this ring is connectedby v spreaders 18 vwith the speculum blades'.
Links o-r rods 19 are connected with the ring 17, and extend tl'irough openmgsjinjthe base, and the rods are bent inwardly toward each other yand connected-outside the base.k Referringto Figure 1i, it will be seen that the connection between these rods, of which .there are two, is laterally'offset, and is provided with a finger piece indicatedfatw20, for convenience inv operating the spreader Referring to Figures 1`and'2, it will 4be seen the the spreader'blades are pointed and curve inwardly from the outer end ofthe pipe 1 whenthey are closed. They close Awith the douche tubes between the adjacent Yedges of the blade, as clearly shown. in 4Figure 4.y Means is provided for holding the speculum blades in open position. The said means consists of a series ofratchet -teeth 21 on one of the rods 19, and these teeth are adapted to engage the edge of the o-pening in the base through which the rod slides.
The plunger rod 6 has a lug 22 for limitwith a suitable source of supply for a medicing its inward movement with respect to the pipe 1, and the gate or valve 4 is opened by means of a crank 23. This crank passes through an opening in the base and is connected to the gate or valve, which is pivoted -to the pipe 1, and the crank shaft has a crank 24 by which it may be'turned to swing the gate open.
The improved douche is used as follows: With the parts inthe position of Figure 1, the douche is introduced into thekcavityy to be irrigated-or treated, and a source of supply for a medicated liquid is connectedl to the pipe 12 while the pipe 14` is connected with a waste. After the pipe" has been introduced, and the base is in contact with the patients body, the finger piece 2O is pushed upward, and this movement tends to straighten the stretchers 18 and to move the speculuin blades outwardly.
This outward movement of the blades puts the walls of the cavity on the stretch, eX- posing every part thereof to the action of the medicated liquid which is now permitted to flow through the douche pipes. The waste liquid passes out through the hood 13 to thewaste. t
When it is desired to apply diy powdered medicaments, the powder is placed in Vthe space above the plunger, and the gate 4 is closed. The gate is opened to permit the in` sertion of the powder. H desired, the powder may be placed in the pipe l when the douche ig introduced. After the cavity has been thoroughly irrigated, the supply of liquid is cut ed, the gate or valve 4 is opened,
and the powder is ejected, thus thoroughly powdering thevwalls of the cavity.
I claim:
l. A device of the character specified, comprising` a pipe, a series of periorate douche tubes supported outside the pipe, a base connected with the pipe rand having a hood encircling the pipe, a supply ring for the douche tubes within the hood and to which the douche tubes are connected, said ring having an inlet, and the hood having an outlet, a gate or valve for closing the inner end of the pipe, means for opening said gate or valve, and a powder ejecting plunger in the pipe, a series of spreader blades mounted about the pipe and hinged toy swingV toward and from the pipe, and means for simultaneously swinging saidy blades toward and from the pipe.
2.` A device of the character specified, comprising a pipe, a series of perforate douche tubes supported outside the pipe, a base connected with the pipe and having a hood encircling the pipe, a supply ring for the douche tubes within the hood and to which iterations along their outer sides, a ring arranged on said tubes, and a speculum having blades arranged intermediate said tubes and pivotally connected to said ring to be carried thereby, and meansior spreading the blades ot' the speculum.
4. A device of the character described including a series of douche tubes having perorations along their outer sides, a ring arranged on said tubes, and a speculum having blades arranged intermediate said tubes and pivotally connected to said ring to be carried thereby.
A device off the charactei'- described comprising a pipe, a series of douche tubes supported on said pipe and having perforations alon their outer sides, a hollow supply ring arranged on said pipe and connected witli said douche tubes, a ring on said tubes arranged adjacent said supply ring, a speculum having a plurality of blades pivotally connected to said last-mentioned ring to be carried thereby, and means for spreading the blades of the speculum including a sliding ring on said pipe and spreader arms connecting said ring and said blades.
6. A device of the character specified comprising a pipe, a series of douche tubes supported outside the pipe and having perforations on their outer side, a hollow supply ring encircling said pipe and connected with said douche tubes and a plunger movable longitudinally of the pipe.
