OLIVER SEVERANOE, OF MIDDLEBURY, VERMONT, ASSIGNOR TO A.J. SEVERANOE, OF SAME PLACE.
`IMPRovrzwu-:NT IN sTocK-CARS.
Specification formngfpart of Letters Patent No. 144,798, dated November 18, 1873; application filed October 1, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1,OLrvER SEvEEANcE, of Middlebury, in the county of Addison and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Methods of Transporting Sheep, Hogs, Calves, 85e.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof', reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the interior arrangement of a car for the transportation of sheep, hogs, or other live stock, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure l is a longitudinal vertical section of a railroad-car embodying my invention, and Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section of the same.
In the accompanying drawing I have shown a railroadcar tted up with three tiers of stalls; but I do not coniine myself to this number, as the car may be arranged with any number of tiers desired, according to the height of the car and to the kind of live stock to be transported in the same, the object being to leave a central passage, so one sideof each stall can be examined by a person passing through the central passage, which also furnishes a means of ventilation.
A represents a railroad-car used for the transportation of live stock. In this car are made two or more tiers of stalls on each side of a central longitudinal passage, B, running the entire length of the car. One or more transverse passages, B', may also be made, if desired; but this is not necessary or material.
The iloor O of each tier or apartment is inclined either inward or outward, and made water-proof by any suitable means, thereby preventing the urine from one apartment or tier from dribbling down into the one below, and causing it to run-toward the side of the car, or in the direction of the inclination. D D are the partitions betweenand forming the stalls, which partitions are secured between slats a a, leaving an open space above and below each partition.
This construction allows of the partitions being taken out without injury when-it is necessary to change cars, or for other purposes, and abundant room is left in connection with the central passage for ventilation and inspection.
a represents stop-bars attached to the top and bottom of the slotted posts a, the object being to provide aspace between the top of the partition and the roof, and between the bottom and the iioor, to obtain ventilation.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. A stall for stock-car, consisting of the inclined floor C and the adjustable partitions D, confined by grooved posts a, substantially as described. 2. 'Ihe stop-bars a attached to the top and to the bottom of the slotted posts a, in com4 bination with the adjustable partitions D, and for the purpose herein specified.
3. The adjustable tiers, cach consisting of two or more stalls, constructed as described, each tier constitutinga series of compartments, combined in one solid andremovable part, as and for the purpose set forth. y
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I aiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
OLIVER SEVERANCE.
