Be it mown that l, @scan SoHLIoH'rnR, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Hamilton, in the county of Butler and State .of Ohio, rhave invented a new and useful improvement in Manifolding Machines, of which the following specification is a full disclosure.
My invention relates to improvements in autographic registers or manifolding machines, in which mechanical feeding means is employed for advancing the web of paper or several super-posed webs over the writing table of the machine for rewinding one of the webs'upon a rewinding spindle within the frame of the machine.
The machine is adaptedA to operate upon webs of paper which have successive symbols or printed forms thereupon "and said webs are provided with perforations having relation to said symbols or forms, and of definite spacing lengths longitudinally of lthe webs. A plurality of such perforated webs in superposed relation are employed for manifolding purposes and the perforations of the several webs are arranged 'for registration. the perforations however, for various uses may vary relatively, and for the machine shown herein lrnown as a record or sumie record web, which is rewound within ie machine, is considerably less than the webs which are issued from the machine. he mechanism of the machine is designed 'for translating or vfeeding the webs in regulated distance or premeasured lengths governed hy the distance of the loiigitudiy nal aperture spacing of the web or webs employed for successive advancement of the webs, and the registry of the perforations of the relative forms of the 'several superposed webs relied upon for establishing and maintaining registration and alignment of the forms, with each successive advancement of the web.

ln the foregoing description it has been Vgenerally designated that thep'ins inter-- cept7 the paper or strip through registering apertures, this word however is intended to deline merely a stopping or arresting of thel paper for any and all functions which may bey achieved by the engagement ofthe pins through the paper apertures. i
Moreover, no endeavor has herein been made to describe in treatise-like detail, or in a thoroughly comprehensive manner, all of the accomplishments of the machine or of its various uses, and advantages relative to registration, alignment and successive advancements of the webs, or of the possibilities which may be inherent in the structure, a clear description of the details of construction and general operation of the machine yonly'being given.
In the drawings, 1 designates a base. Secured to vthe base and upstanding therefrom in spaced parallel relation are side frames 2 and 3, which may be of sectional form, one section hingedly mounted upon the second for convenient access to the interior of the frame. The side frames are provided with supports i for journaling the webs of paper under a proper degree of tension. Only one of these supports is shown in the drawings, see Fig. 2, but as is usual the frames are provided with sufcient number of supports to ournal the number of strips of paper with which the device is designed for use. A writing table 5 is secured upon and supported between the side frames, and the strips are drawn over this Writing table in superposed relation. A 'margin frame 6 is hingedly mounted above the writing table, the paper being drawn between the writing table and the margin frame. Any number of strips of paper may be used within prac-tical limits, but I have shown three. rIhe strips are per-- forated or apertured at predetermined intervals divisional of the specific sized sheet blanks of which the strips are comprised, these'perforations being aligned longitudinally of the direction of withdrawal. rlhe drawings show the strips provided with two apertures aligned Acrosswise of the direction of travel of the strips within each sheet blank, thus providing a number of series of longitudinally spaced apertures. WVhere several strips are used, the respective series of longitudinally spaced apertures are superposed. A flat spring member 7 is fixed to the under surface of the writing table 5 and is extended forwardly from the secured portion thereof toa point adjacent the forward end of the writing table. This member is formed of two parallel spaced spring members 8 and a cross 'member 9 secured to said spring members at the free end thereof and extending between the same. This member is provided with one or more pins 10, see Figs. 5, 6 and 7, which pins are clamped between respective members 8 and respective ends of the cross member 9 in grooves formed therein, and extend forwardly therefrom and then upwardly at right angles thereto. The number of pins depends on the number of series of longitudinally spaced apertures in the strips, there being two shown. Y
Disposed upon an axis placed crosswise of the strips is a roll 11. rlhis roll is arranged beyond the forward end of the writing table and is journaled at its ends in bearing blocks 12 mounted for vertical movement in vertical iores 13 of the respective side frames 2 and 3, the shaft of the roll extending through vertical slots comi'nunicating with the respective bores, to permit vertical movement of the roll. The roll is normally maintained in a lower position by compression springs 14 disposed in respective bores 13, above the bearing blocks 12, and abutting the bearing blocks and plugs 15, screw threaded into the upper ends of respective bores 13, with their opposite ends. See F ig. 11. Journaled in the side frames and extending between the same on an axis parallel with the axis of the r'oll 11 and disposed below the same is a shaft 1G. The roll and shaft are rotated in unison by two meshing gears 17 disposed adjacent and on the inside of side-frame 2, in Fig. 4f, one of these gears being secured to the shaft of roll 11 and the other being secured to shaft 16. rfriok arms 18 are rotatably mounted ou the shaft 16 adjacent respective side frames, the arm adj a'- cent the frame 2 being disposed inside of the gears 17. Endwise movement of the shaft 16 is prevented by collars 19 secured thereon adjacent to and on the inside of the frames, the collar adjacent the frame 2being disposed on the inside of the gear 17, a trip arm 18 being disposed between said gear and said coilar, and the collar adjacent the side frame 3 being disposed on the inside of the adjacent trip arm 18, said arm being between said collar and the side frame End thrust of the roll 11 is prevented by outwardly facing shoulders, formed by the reduced ends of the shaft thereof, acting against the respective side frames.
The shaft 16 is provided with one or more disks 20, depending upon the number of series of longitudinally spaced apertures in the paper, there being two shown. rhese disks are secured upon the shaft 16 in spaced relation and are aligned with respective longitudinally spaced apertures of the paper. The disks are adapted to engage the paper between them and the roil 11 to withdraw the paper when the roll and disks are rotated in withdrawing directions, the gears 17 being' so proportioned that the peripheral speeds of the disks and roll are the same.
The disks and roll `provide `opposing annular grooves 21, and the pins 10, there-being the same number of these as there are disks und opposed grooves, for reasons now to appear. are disposed to project from grooves of the respective disks into respective opposed grooves of the roll. lt is obvious that the pins l0 are disposed in alignment with respective series of longitudinally spaced apertures or the paper, because of their proj ect-ing relation within said grooves.
The paper extends over the writing table beneath the margin iframe 6 and forwardly thereof between the roll l1 and disks 2() which engage the same to withdraw it from the frame when the roll and disks are rotated. However, when aperturesot the paper register with the line ot' contact of the roll and disks, the driving relation of the roll and disks with the paper ceases and permits further rot-ation ot the rolls and disks without corresponding withdrawal of the paper by reason of the tact that the disks areless in width than the width ot' the respective apertures ot the paper and are aligned therewith. The pins i0 are yieldably urged against a face off the paper by the spring member 7, and are aligned with respective series of longitudinally spaced apertures, are adapted to engage through respective apertures to intercept withdrawal ot the paper and are disposed 'to intercept such withdrawal during the registry orp the engaged apertures with the line of contact ot the roll and disks with the paper'. By reason ot the 'tact thatthe pins engage the same apertures that are in registry with the' line of Contactof the rolls with the paper, any shrinkage or expansion of the paper between the longitudinally spaced apertures cannot prevent the proper cooperation ot the disks and pins in stopping the withdrawal or the paper, nor can longitudinal mistacing of the y apertures prevent such proper cooperation.
lt will be further noted that paper having any desired arrangement of longitudinally spaced apertures may be used.` lFigs. 8 to 12 show the roll, a disk, a pin, and the paper in the positions they assume while the paper is being withdrawn between'the positions of interception ot withdrawal thereof. Figs. 2 and ll show thesame parts in the position they assume when the paper is in an intercepted position and before the parts are actuated to effect further withdrawal ot the faces tlieieot' in close proximity with the' line or contact ot theroll with the disks,
thus permitting the apertures ot the paperv to be relatively small and circular in form as is the standaidpraotice at present, without decreasing the size of the roll and disks.

V- i* It is sometimes the case that the respective apertures of the several strips'are not in registry with each other longitudinally of the direction of withdrawal as theyy approach the line ot contact or the roll'll and the respective disk with the paper, as shown in F ig. 8. This is connected during the interception of lthe strips in the following manner. As the forwardmost aperture registers vwith the line of Contact ot' the roll and the disks with the paper, the driving relation ot the roll and disks with this'stripis brokenY by reason of the fact that the disks are less in width than theapertures vand are aligned therewith, and no part of the strip lies between the roll and idisks to establish a withdrawing engagement therewith. By reason ot the fact that the pins yand disks operate with the same respective .apertures during the interception of ,the withdra'wal ot the paper, the'several superposed strips may have the longitudinally spaced aperture thereof spaced differently, so that the several webs are withdrawn unequally during each withdrawal thereof, thus permitting relatively short sheet blanks to com..
prise any of the strips relatively'to the length of sheet blanks comprising any other strip. This arrangenientis advantageous where it desired to reoord'only a portion oit! the data, written on the sheet blanks kcomprisino" one strip, on the sheet blanks comprising another strip. After the withdrawal of the paper is intercepted, further rotation of the roll and dis rs cannot effect further withdrawal of the paper until the pins are withdrawn from the engaged apertures and the roll and disks engaged with the paper beyond the apertures. rhis action is effected by mechanism now to be described. Mounted for longitudinal movement upon the shait 16 between the disks 20 is a roll 27. The roll 11 is annularly grooved, designated at 28, on either side of the mid portion 29 thereof. rfhe roll 27 is substantially' the. same width as the portions 29 of roll 11 and is adaptedto be moved into and out of line therewith opposite a groove to make and break driving eno'agementbetween the roll 27 and the portion 29 of roll 1l with the paper. As soon as this initial withdrawal is eected, the roll 27 may be moved out of paper engaging relation, thus allowing the pins 10, under the iiiflueii le of spring member T, to move against the face of the paperpreparatory to engaging through the next successive apertures or the paper as it is withdrawn by disks 20 and roll 11, as they are rotated as hereinbefore described. rlChe shaft 16 eX- tends outwardly beyond the side frame 2 and is conveniently rotated by a bored hand crank 3'? secured by means of its bore upon the extending end of the shaft.
The side frame 2 is formed with an outwardly facing case 88 which is closed yby a cover 39 secured thereto, this cover having au aperture through which shaft 16 eX- tends. Formed on the outerl surface of the coverf?) around shaft 16 is an outwardly facing cam 4:0. rlie rod 32 extends beyond shaft 16, and a cam actuated member 41 is securedy on the extending end of the-rod for y movement and rotation therewith, and eX- tends radially therefrom and then inwardly beyond the path of the arm of the crank, for engagement with cam a0. The cam actuated member is additionally secured for rotation with shaft 16 by engagement thereof with a longitudinal slot 4t2 formed on the hub of the crank. The cam actuated member is adapted to bel moved by the cam outwardly, longitudinally of shaft 16, from an inward position upon rotation of said shaft in its paper withdrawing direction. The roll 27 and cone member 35 are arranged so that inward movement of the rod causes the same to function and outward movement of the rod renders the saine functionless. Thus it will be observed that the cam actuates the rod through member Ll1 to render the roll 27 and cone member functionless; ln effecting the movement of the paper out of an intercepted position, the rod is manually moved inwardly, when the relative positions of the cam 4:0 and cam actuated member i1 are suoli that the entire inward movement of the rod is permitted,y this position being shown in l and 'Ehen the crank :37 is rotated in a withdrawing` direct-ion until the withdrawal of the paper is again. stopped, as hereinbefore described. luring such rotation of the crank, the ain il0 engages the cam actuated member to move it and rod 32 outwardly to render the roll 27 and cone member functionless, this action taking place afterthe engaged apertures are moved out of aperture registering position and prior to the registryof successive apertures with the line of Contact of roll 11 and disks 20.
It will be noted that the bodily movement of the roll 27 out of paper engaging relation leaves the paper entirely free, thus -obviating any possibility of this roll causing interference with the paper when withdrawn by the roll 11 and disks 2Oy or when the withdrawal of the paper is stopped.
It will be further noted that the mechanism for controlling the longitudinal movement of the roll 27 is very simple and compact and well adapted for use iu a machine in which several disks are used and the roll 27 is disposed between the same as shown.
The periphery of the roll 27 is provided with a depression or fiat portion 42 to permit this roll being moved into paper engaging relation with the mid-portion 29 of roll 11 free of the paper, so that longitudinal movement of the roll intofunctioning position while the depression faces the paper is not obstructed or interfered with by the paper, nor is any side thrust exerted on the paper which might disarrange the same. This depression is positioned relatively to the cam member 41, so that it is opposite the roll 11 when the cam actuated member is positioned relatively to the cam 40, so that the entire inward movement of the rod 32 is permitted when the depression faces the paper.
A winding roll 43 is removably supported for rotation between the side frames 2 and 3 in a usual manner, and the lower strip 22 is wound thereon after it passes the roll 11 and disks 20, thisV strip being guided thereto by a guide roll 44 rotatably mounted between the side frames in parallelism with shaft 16. The roll 43 is driven from shaft 16 in the following manner by a gear train disposed within the gear case formation 38. See Figs. and 4. A stud 45 is rotatably mounted in the side frame 2 and cover 39 and extends across the enclosure of the gear case formation in parallelism with shaft 16. Mounted for rotation on stud 45 and for movement longitudinallyv thereof is a friction gear 46 which is meshed with a gear 47 secured upon shaft 16. A second friction gear is secured on the stud 45 inwardly ef gear 46 and abuts the side frame 2 to prevent inward thrust thereof. Friction disks 49 of leather or other friction material attached to the respective opposing faces of the gears 46 and 48 surround the stud 45 and provide a frictional driving connection between. the same, and a compression spring 5() surrounds the stud 45 between the cover 39 and gear 46 and exerts inward pressure upon gear 46 to maintain this gear and gear 48 and the interposed friction Adisks y49 in frictional driving engagement. disposed concentrically with 'the roll 43, is-
ina bore ofthe side frame 3 and is detach-' ably retained in place by a spring arm 53 at the gear endof the axle, the said spring arm being supported by the cover 39. A pawl 54 is pivotally vmounted within the gear case and engages the teeth of gear 45, to prevent` rotation of the mechanism in a direction reversely of the withdrawing direction, this pawl being urged against the gear by a spring 55p. See Fig. 3.
The vgear train, driving the winding roll. 43 is so proportioned thatthe winding roll will wind up the strip 22 as it is withdrawn by the roll 11 and disks 2O when there is a.
minimum amount of the strip wound on the roll 43. It is obvious that 'as the amount of the strip wound upon the roll 43 increases the driving mechanism will tend to wind the strip upon the roll 43 faster than it is withdrawn by the roll 11 and disks 20. When this condition arises the gears 46 and 48 slip with relation to one another, the rotation of the roll 43 being retarded by the strip 22 as withdrawn by the roll 11 and disks 20.
During the interception of the withdrawal of the paper, the driving mechanism has a tendency to continue to wind the strip 22, after the apertures of the paper register with the line of contact of the roll 11 and disks 20, and sometimes interferes with the `proper and uniform interception of the withdrawal of the strip. This condition is yaggravated by the fact that the tension on' the strip 22 iseected by the respective supports 4 and varies as the roll of the strip 22 supported thereby varies in size.

A device of the nature described including' a frame from which a strip of paper is withdrawmthe strip having spaced apertures aligned longitudinally of its direction of withdrawal, means for withdrawing the strip including a rotatably mounted roll and an opposing rotatably mounted disk element, said -diskelement being less in width than the aperturesof the strip and aligned therewith to cause cessation ofthe withdrawing relation of the feeding means with .the strip when an aperture registers withthe plane of the aXes of said roll and disk element, an yabutment member yieldingly urged towarda face of the strip and across the ,path thereof and disposed in alignment with saidaperturesand disposed to eng-age through a registering aperture of the strip to intercept the withdrawal thereof and adapted to intercept such Withdrawal during the registry of an aperture with the plane of the axes of said roll anddisk-element, a winding .roll upon which the strip is ,wound after it passes said feeding means, a yielding frictional driving mechanism 'for driving the winding roll with the rotation of said roll and-[disk element, means for rendering said mechanism functionless yto drive the winding roll includinga connection with said-abutment member, adapted to be operated by movement of saidabutment member through a registeringfaperture to render said,drivingzvmechanism functionless and adapted to be operated by movement of said abutment member out of engagement with van aperture to `render said means functionless, means for Ainitiating movement of the -strip out of aperture-regisy tering position during further rotation of .said roll and disk element including amovable member-controlling the functioning of the same, said movable member operating to withdraw said abut-ment member from ythe engaged aperture and to render said second mentioned means functionless when it is .moved into functioning position, and means for moving said movable member into nonfunctioning position including a cam and a 4cam actuated member,.said cam and cam tatably mounted roll and opposing, ,rotatably mounted disks spaced crosswise of theV strip, said disks being lessin width than Vthe apertures of the strip and aligned with respective I llongitudinally spaced apertures to cause cessation of the withdrawingrelation of the feeding means with the strip when apertures register withtlie plane of the axes lo-f said rollv and disk elements, abutment members yieldably urged toward a face of l roll and disk elements, a winding roll upon which the strip is wound after it passes said feeding means, a yielding frictional driving mechanism for driving the winding roll with the rotation of said roll and disk elements, and means for rendering said mechanism functionless to drive the winding roll in-vr cluding a connection with said abutment member adapted to be operated by the movement of said abutment members through registering apertures to render said driving mechanism functionless. l n

A device of the nature described including a frame from which a strip of paper is withdrawn, the strip having apertures spaced longitudinally and in series crosswise of its direction of withdrawal, means for withdrawing the strip including a rotatably mounted roll and opposing rotatably mounted disk elements spaced crosswise of the strip, said disk elements being less in width than the apertures of the strip and aligned with respective longitudinally spaced apertures to cause cessation of the with` drawing relation of the feeding means with the strip when apertures register with the plane of the axes of said roll and disk elements, abutment members yieldingly urged toward a face of the stripv and across the path thereof and disposed in alignment with respective longitudinally spaced apertures and disposed to engage through respective registering apertures of the strip to intercept the withdrawal thereof and adapted to intercept such withdrawal during the registry of apertures with the plane of the axes of said roll and disk elements, a winding roll upon which the strip is wound after it passes said feeding means, a yielding frictional driving mechanism for driving the winding roll with the rotation of said roll and disk elements, means for rendering said mechanism functionless to drive the Winding roll including a connection with said abut ment members through registering apertures to render said driving mechanism functionless, and means for initiating movement of the strip lout of aperture registeringposition during further rotation of said roll and disk elements includinga movable member controlling the functioningoffthe samesaid i movable -inemberiopeiating towvithdraw said` abutment members ,-froinftheengaged apertures andto, render said second mentioned means functionless when moved'to functioning position.
