  • My invention relates to that class of whifletrees in which draft-chains at the extremities of the whiflietree and a central draft'chain passing around a roller are employed in lieu of single-trees; and it consists in constructing the under surface of the central plate, through which the king-bolt for attaching the whiflietree to the tongue passes, with a shoulder, so that a less portionof the under surface of the plate will be in contact with the tongue than in the ordinary construction, thus dispensing with much of the friction between the whiflletree and tongue in the vibrations of the former on the latter, and at thesame time allowing the use of a smaller roller for the'central chain than in the ordinary construction.

IMPROVEMENT IN WHIFFLETREES.
Specification forming part of Leiters Patent No. 144,786, dated November 18, 1873; application iiled September 9, 1873.
accompanying drawings forming part of thisv specilication, in which- Figure 1 is a top view of my improved whiflletree; and Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same through line x x, Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference in the accompanying drawings denote the same parts.
My invention relates to that class of whifletrees in which draft-chains at the extremities of the whiflietree and a central draft'chain passing around a roller are employed in lieu of single-trees; and it consists in constructing the under surface of the central plate, through which the king-bolt for attaching the whiflietree to the tongue passes, with a shoulder, so that a less portionof the under surface of the plate will be in contact with the tongue than in the ordinary construction, thus dispensing with much of the friction between the whiflletree and tongue in the vibrations of the former on the latter, and at thesame time allowing the use of a smaller roller for the'central chain than in the ordinary construction.
In the accompanying drawings, A is the whiletree, provided with plates o o at its .eX- tremities, to which are attached the draftchains C C. B is the central plate, through a perforation in which a king-bolt passes for attaching the whifiletree to the tongue. The lower face, m, of the plate B rests upon the tongue, and is formed with a shoulder, n, in front of the whiffletree, instead of being made continuous, as in the ordinary construction of this plate. By this construction I am enabled to avoid the friction of the entire lower surface of the central plate upon the tongue, the
only'T friction arising being that between the surface on of the central plate against the tongue. I am also enabled by this construction to use a smaller roller, D, for the central draft-chain E F than is used in the central plate, as ordinarily constructed, which renders the construction lighter and equally as effective as the roller ordinarily employed. e e are Charing-plates on the rear side of the whiffletree opposite the fore-wheels, to protect the former from injury by the latter.
I claim as my invention- The whiffletree A, the central plate B nearly encompassing the whiflietree, and having a shoulder, n, and the roller D pivoted between .the ends of the plate, all combined substanially as described, and for the purpose set Orth.
