PETER oarn WILKINS,
PATENT OF BLISS, OKLAHOMA.
srovnrrrn ANCHOR AND LOCK.
Application filed April 7,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, PETER ORIE WILKINS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Bliss, in the county of Noble and State of Oklahoma, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stovepipe Anchors and Locks, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive means for securely locking the end of a stove pipe in the chimney hole or opening to prevent the accidental displacement thereof and the inconvenience and risks incident to displacement and at the same time to provide means whereby the intentional removal of the same may be etfected without ditficulty and with these objects in view the invention consists in a construction and combination of parts of which a preferred embodiment is illustrated in the accompanying drawing; wherein Figure 1 is a sectional view of a'thimble having a stove pipe arranged in normal engaging relation therewith.
Figure 2 is a detail view of one end of a sto-vepipe section constructed for engagement with the thimble.
Figure 3 is a side view of the thimble detached.
Figure 4 is a transverse sectional view, of the latter.
The thimble proper consists of a ring or annular band 10 provided with an upstruck thread 11 forming an exterior anchoring bead for engagement with the wall of the opening 12 formed in the chimney structure indicated at 13, the inner end of said band being contracted as shown to provide an inwardly extending peripheral bead leaving an outwardly flaring terminal flange 14 for engagement with the inner edge of the wall to assist in locking the thimble against movement incident to the insertion or removal of the stove pipe section 15 which in addition to the usual reinforcing bead 16 is provided with a spiral head 17 forming a screw thread for engagement wit-h that provided in the thimble. The terminal bead defined by the flange 14: lying in a plane perpendicular to 1920. Serial No. 371,822.
the axis of the band and the thread 11 defining a bead at an angle to the axis of the band and both these being engaged by the wall of the opening in which the band is inserted, any angular or turning movement of the band is, therefore, precluded and the band or thimble remains firmly secured in the opening. Further, the inner end of the pipe section extends into abutting relation with the terminal bead and thus tends to extend the thimble at the inner edge and bring it into firmer contact with the wall of the opening. Having anchored the thimble in the opening formed in the chimney wall it is only necessary to apply the stove pipe section and after alining the threads thereof with those of the thimble to impart a rotary movement tothe same in order to secure an interlocking engagement of the pipe section with the thimble which will prevent displacement through jarring or relative contraction or expansion of the parts or otherwise than by a reverse turning movement of the pipe section to longitudinally disengage the interlocking thread portions. Owing to the connection of another pipe section with that which is disposed in engagement with the thimble such turning movement as will effect the disengagement thereof from the thimble is a comparatively remote contingency and therefore the security of the pipe section is assured.
What is claimed is A flue thimble consisting of a band provided with an internal up-struckthread form ing an exterior anchor bead for engagement with the wall of a flue opening, the thimble adjacent one end being contracted to provide an inwardly directed bead leaving a terminal flaring flange, in combination with a stove pipe section having exterior threads interlocking with the internal threads of the band, the inner end of said pipe section extending into abutting relation with said in wardly directed bead for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof he afiixes his signature.
PETER ORIE WILKINS.
