IYZS E. MALIHA COMBINATION CABINET Filed Apr. l, 1922 2 sheets-sheet 2 in order to Patented ar. d, i3..
ERNEST MAIH, 0F BROKLYN, NEW YORK.
COMBHIATION CABXNET.
Application led April 1,
To ail whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, EnNE-s'r MALIHA, a citizen of Syria, residing at the cit of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in t e county Kings and State of New York, haveyinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Cabinets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to storage or display cabinets and has particular reference to cabinets for'the storing of various commodities in a manner that will insure complete seclusion or housing of such commodities while at the same time rendering it easy for any of the commodities to be made accessible.
Among the objects of the invention is to provide a cabinet ofA any suitable' size or general design and constructed of any suitable materials the same being provided with a multiplicity of upright panels ar-Y ranged for the supporting and carrying of various articles or items on their inner walls, said panels being so constructed or arranged as to be swung` outward around vertical axes resent the commodities either to view or wlthin easy reach. v
A further object of the invention is to provide a cabinet having a plurality of vertical panels of uniform width and having means for swinging said panels in such a manner that they may constitute in'eifect the side walls of a casing, whether the outer or the inner surfaces of the panels are presented to view, the casing being adapted to be substantially closed in either position of the anels.
1th the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the arrangement and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed, and while the invention is not restrictedto the exact details of construction disclosed or suggested herein, still for the purpose of illustrating a ractical embodiment thereof reference is ad to thel accompanying drawings, in which. like reference characters designate the same parts in the several views, and in which- Fi re 1 is a detail perspective view showmg ile normal appearance of the cabinet wlth the casing closed.
Fig. 2 is a vertical central section of the same on the line 2 2 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional detail of lthat the flat portion of each 1922. Serial No. 548,571.
the panel manipulating means, as from the line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a horizontal section on a plane just above that of Fig. 3 and illustrating the slde walls or panels of the casing swung partially open.
Referring now more speciliciall drawings, show my device as incl7 base 10, a pedestal 11', `and a casing ported in any suitable manner upper part of the pedestal.
The casing l2 comprises a bottom 13, shown as of regular hexagonal form, and at 14 is a top similarly shaped. The bottom and top are heldin xed spaced relation to each other by suitable stationary binding or stay rods 15 extending through corresponding holes in the bottom and top and having shoulders 16 and 17 bearing gainst the upper surface of the bottom and the under surface of the top, respectively, both ends of the rods being screw threaded for the accomodation of nuts 18 for binding the bottom and top in firm position against said shoulders and to give an ornamental finish to the cabinet. The nuts for this purpose are shown as of rounded or spherical form.
Harmonious with the shape of the bottom and top and to make a casing substantially in the form of a regular prism, which in the form shown is hexl onal, I provide a corresponding number o panels 19, shown as of' flat formation and of equal width. Each panel is 'so shaped or molded as to include a hinge member or hub 20 preferably of smooth cylindrical form, having a central vertical hole therethrough and through which one of the aforesaid rods 15 passes. The panels 19 are substantially co-extensive in vertical length with the height of the s ace between the bottom and the top of to the uding a 12 supupon the t e casing, and thel width of each of the Y panels is such thatvits free ed'ge swings or lies close to the hub of the next adjacent panel. In other words, the appearance is panel fits snugly between two adjacent similar cylindrical columns. Each .panel however, except as soon to be stated, is free to swing' outward from its closed position in Fi 1, 2, and 3 so las to occupy any desire lposition around the axis of the rod 15 whic' supports it.
The panels are-adapted to carry on either face, shown as on the inner face, any suitable holders, receptacles, or devlces for carrying,`
as shown p I' display purposes, orthe like. For examp supporting, ordisplaying any desi-red artimeans on the inner faces of the panels for supporting cigars on shelves or racks 21 and 22, ink at 23 and a writing pen atl 24, playing cards at 25, a box `of matches at 26, and cigarettes at 27. Fromvwhat has been stated however it will be understood that these receptacles may be variously arranged and for holding other commodities. Supported upon the top 14 is an ash tray 28 of any suitable construction.
Within the casing and supported in any convenient manner upon the upper surface of the bottom 13 is a drawer 29 .adapted to be drawn outward as shown in Fig. 5, as by pulling upon a knob 30. This drawer is shown fitted with a sliding lid .31. The drawer is shown guided between and held in place by rabbeted rails 32 fixed to the bottom 13. This drawer may be employed for retaining cigars, game apparatus, or any other desired articles.
Any suitable means may be provided to manipulate the panels 19, either for opening or closing the same or for holding them all in a similar uniform position with relation to the other parts of the casing. To this end I attach tothe upper end of each hub 2O a pinion 33, the connection between the pinion and the'hub being through pins 34 projecting into holes 34'.' The pinion andthe hub will be understood to be freely rotatable varound the rod 15 which supports them.
Since the casing is symmetrical with respect to its vertical center or axis, the pinions are equally spaced from said centerv and so are adapted to be actuated or controlled simultaneously by means of a master gear 35 through which a shaft 36 passes and is secured and to the upper end of which is fixed a handle or knob 37. The shaft 36 is journaled in a bearing sleeve 38 secured in the center of the top 14. It will be understood that the master gear is in constant mesh with all of the pinions 33, and so when the master gear 35 is rotated around the axis of the shaft 36, as in a clockwise direction, looking down upon the device, the panels will all be swung simultaneously and to an equal extent in a counter clockwise directionas indicated by the .dotted line 40, Fig. 3. For the open ingof the vdrawer. 29 the panels must of course be stopped at a mid ition as in Fig. 5, but otherwise the pane s maybe swung so as to practicall' change positions with onejanother as in icated b the aforesaid dotted line 40. Hence it fo ows that if the panels are 'all swun open to their fullest extent, what norma y-is the outside would become the inside wall of each panel, and so the articles .for use or display carried by the normally inside faces thereof will be supported then directly upon the outside. 0bviously the smooth normally outside "surfaces of the panels may be ornamented'or4 may carry advertising matter if desired. The several panels' are so supported upon the shoulders 16 as to swing with an almost imperceptible degree of friction, but the combined vfriction of all of the panels and parts co-operating therewith isfsuicient to hold the panels in whatever position they may be left after the knob or handle 37 is A'la actuated, 'so that the panels will be self retained in position I claim :V
Y1. In a cabinet of the character set forth, the combination of. a bottom, a top, a series of symmetrically spaced stationarystay rods extending between the top andthe bottom, screw threaded means to clamp the rods to the top` and bottoni surfaces of the topand bottom of the cabinet for holding them in fixed spaced relation, and a series of panels mounted upon said rods and movable around the same. l
2. A device as set forth in claim 1 in which each panel is provided with a pinion, and a master gear is provided having constant mesh with all of the pinions for controlling the action of all of them simultaneously, each panel having a hub alongone edge and the pinion pertaining thereto being fixed to one end ofthe hub.
In testimony whereof I 'aix my signature.
'ERNEST automatically.
