Further, these spacing strips being of a width greater than the thickness of the sashes provide guideways of ample width to receive the sashes, thus avoiding any difiiculty, or dressing down of the sashes, in assembling the window structure. It will be noted that all the sash rails are of uniform thickness, thus enabling the finished sash to be passed through a sander, or other suitable device, and dressed to an exactstandard thickness which is preferably one-sixteenth of an inch less than the width of the spacing strips.
The inner face of each rail-of the upper sash, and the outer faces of the top and side rails of the lower sash, that is, the faces adjacent to the intermediate frame, are recessed to form longitudinal extending channels 14:. In each channel is mounted a packing adapted. to bear against the adja cent surface of the intermediate frame and form dust and wind proof joints. Preferably this packing is in the form of a strip of metal 15 secured at one edge to thebottom of the channel and curved so that the resilient body portion thereof will bear against the intermediate frame, thus maintaining a tight joint even though there should be some movement of the sash away fromthe intermediate frame members. In

In order that the sash may be retained in position to hold the packing firmly against the intermediate frame without the necessity of fitting each sash too tightly'in its guideways, or pockets, I have provided a'sash tightening device which I have applied to the upper portion of the upper sash and to the lower portion of the lower sash. This sash tightening device may take various forms, but in the present instance, I
have shown it as comprising a bracket, or
angular bar, 19 rigidly secured to a fixed part of the window structure adjacent to the upper or lower sash rail, as the case may be, and in the present instance I have secured these brackets to the guide strips 3 and 4, respectively. Each bracket has an inclined surface 20 arranged to be engaged by an adjustable stop carried by the sash and this stop may, if desired, be in the form of a screw 21 inserted in the sash. By properly adjusting the screw head with relation to the inclined surface of the bracket the tightening device will forcethe sash into engagement with the intermediate frame when it is moved to its closed position. This sash tightening'device, while of meansof a suitable fasteningdevice, which is here shown as comprising a locking bar, or latch, .22 pivotally mounted on one of the sash rails and adapted to extend across the intermediate frame member, or looking rail, and having at its other end a recessed portion 23 to receive a locking stud 2i secured to the other sash rail, thus locking the two sash rails one to the other and at the same time drawing them snugly into engagement with the permanent locking rail. V In order that the sash may be locked to the permanent locking rail of the intermediate frame as well as to one another, I have provided that rail with a locking member 25 having an overhanging portion beneath which the locking bar 22 is moved, as shown in Fig. 5.
In order that the intermediateframe may be removed from a window structure the sash pulleys, one of which is'shown at 26, are mounted in slots 27 in the frame member and are movably supported therein by means of arms 28 which-are pivotally mounted at their upper ends on the frame member above the slot 27. .In the present construction I have provided a supporting member, orblock, 29 to which the arms 28 are pivotally attached, and as here shown, this member comprises a cylindrical block adapted to be inserted in an auger hole in inner guide strip and the inner spacing strip are removed, and the sash pulleys, 26 swungoutwardly out of the path of the intermediate frame, thus leaving a clear path for the removal of that frame.

It will be apparent from the foregoing description that I have provided a window structure which is simple in its construction and can be easily constructed at a low cost, and which will be dust and wind proof. It will further be noted that by means of this construction I am enabled to form the inner surfaces of the locking rails of the two sashes flush with the inner surfaces of the side rails thereof, thereby avoiding the use of the projecting lock rail which is commonly employed witha sash of this character; The resilient packing strips, or springs provide very permanent packing, *but it is not necessary that the'metal packing should be employed as an ordinary felt strip may be inserted in the recesses, as shown at 32 in Fig. 12.

In a window structure, a main frame, guide strips secured to the inner and outer portions of said main frame, an intermediate frame removably mounted in the main frame and comprising side members and transverse members connecting said side members one to the other, spacing strips interposed between said side members and the respective guide strips to maintain said side members within said frame and in proper spaced relation to said guide strips,and sashes mounted between said intermediate frame and said guide strips.

In a window structure, a main frame, guide strips secured to the inner and outer portions of said main frame, an intermediate frame removably mounted in the main frame and comprising side members and transverse members'connecting said side members one to the other, spacing strips interposed between said side members and the respective guide strips to maintain said side members within said frame and in properspaced relation to saidguide strips,'and sashes mounted between said intermediate frame and said guide strips, said sashes "being of a thickness less than the width of said spacing strips.
3. In a window structure, a main frame, guide strips secured to the .inner and outer portions of said main frame, an intermedn ate frame removably mounted in the main frame and comprising side members and transverse members connecting said side members one to the other, spacing strips interposed between said side members and the respective guide strips to maintain said side members within said frame and in spaced relation to said guide strips, and sashes mounted between said intermediate frame and said guide strips, packing strips carried by said sashes and arranged to engage the intermediate frame to form tight joints between said frame and the respective sashes, and means to press said sashes toward said intermediate frame when said sashes are in their closed positions.
4. In a window structure, a main-frame, guide strips secured to the inner and outer portions of said main frame, an intermediate frame removably mounted in the main frame andcomprising side members and transverse members conn cti-ng said side members one proper to the other, spacing strips interposed between said side members and therespective guide strips to maintain said side members within said frame and in proper spaced relation to said guide strips, and sashes mounted between said intermediate frame and said guide strips, packing strips carried by said sashes and arranged to engage the intermediate frame to form tight joints between said frame and the respective sashes, and
sash tightening devices each comprising a member secured to one of said guide strips and having an inclined surface, and a stop carried by the adjacent portion of the sash and arranged to engage said inclined surface when the sash is moved to its closed position.
5. In a window structure, a main frame, guide strips secured to the inner and outer portions of said main frame, an intermediate frame removably mounted within said main frame and comprising vertical side members, top and bottom transverse members and an intermediate transverse member, sashes mounted between saidintermediate frame and the respective guide strips, and means to hold the lower rail of one of said sashes in engagement with said bottom transverse member.
In a window structure, a main frame,
guide strips secured tothe inner and outer portions of said main frame, an intermediate frame removably'mounted .in said main frame and comprising vertical side members, top and bottom transverse members and an intermediate transverse member, spacing strips interposed between the side members of said intermediate frame and the respective guide strips to retain said intermediate frame in posit-ion within said frame, and sashes mounted between said intermediate frame and the-respective guide-strips.
7. In a window structure, a main frame, guide strips secured to the inner and outer portions of said main frame, an intermediate frame mounted within said main frame and comprising vertical side members, top and bottom transverse members and an intermediate transverse member, sashes mounted between said intermediate frame and the respective guide strips, packing strips carried byrcertam of the rails of said sashesand arranged to engage the corresponding portions of said intermediate frame,
a locking device connected to the lower rail of one of said sashes and adapted to extend across the intermediate member .of said intermediate frame and to engage a part on the upper rail of the other of said sashes and move said rails of said sashes one toward the other, anda device carried by the intermediate member of said intermediate frame and having a part to extend above said locking device. I

In a window structure, a frame, guide strips secured to the inner and outer portionsthereof, an intermediate frame mount ed within the first mentioned frame and spaced from both the inner and outer guide strips, said intermediate frame comprising side members, top and bottom transverse members, and an intermediate locking rail, sashes mounted in the spaces between said intermediate frame and the respective guide strips, packing strips carried by said sashes and arranged to bear against said intermediate frame, a locking device connected to the'lower rail of one of said sashes and adapted to extend across the locking rail of saidin'termediateframe and to engage a member on the upper rail of the other of said sashes, a locking member carried by the locking rail of said intermediate frame to engage said device, brackets secured to said first mentioned frame near the upper and lower portions thereof and having inclined surfaces,and adjustable stops carried by said sashes and arranged to engage the inclined surfaces of said brackets. y

In a window structure, a frame, guide strips secured to the inner and outer portions of said frame, an intermediate framecomprising side members and upper and lower transverse members arranged within the first mentioned frame and spaced from said guide strips to form guideways therewith, sashes mounted'in said guideways, the lower transverse member of said intermediate frame having openings to permit the escape of water from between the same and the adjacent sash, and means for moving the lower rail of the inner sash into contact with said lower transverse member.

In a window structure, a frame, guide strips secured to the inner and outer portions of said frame,an intermediate frame comprising side members and upper and lower transverse members arranged within the firstmentioned frame and spaced from pulleys arms connected with said pulleys, and means said guide strips to form guideways therewith, and sashes mounted in said guideways, means for forming tight oints between the sashes and the intermediate frame, the lower transverse member of said intermediate frame having openings to permit the escape of water-from between thesame and the'adjacent sash, and means for pressing the lower rail of the inner sash into contactwith said lower transverse member,

In a window structure, a frame, guide strips secured to the inner and outer portions of said frame, an intermediate frame mount- .ed within the first mentioned frame and spaced fromthe respective guide strips to form guideways there-with, sashes mounted in said guideways, said main frame having slots opening into the guideways on one side of said intermediate frame, sash pulleys mounted insaid slots, supporting arms connee-ted with said pulleys, supporting blocks mounted insaid main frame abovethe respective slots and having recesses in the lower portions thereof to receive t e upper ends of said arms, and means for pivotally connecting said arms to said blocks.
