slsting of an extensible and collapsible frame having detachable lifting mechanism therefor, sald mechanlsm being applicable to other slmilar frames and adapted to serve as a. 'tire rim spreading and contracting-tool and also in ot er capacities.
Another object is to supply a jack of the type above defined, certain of the parts of sald frame in conjunction with the lifting mechanism serving as a Wheel puller.
A further object is to provide a jack of this nature-serving, without alteration, as a press for removing bushings and the like.
Another object is to supply in a jack of this kind, an extensible and collapsible frame and a'pneumatic lifting mechanism in connection therewith, the scope of adjustment of said support being'considerably! greater than a' single working thrust of the lifting mechanism, said mechanism being adapted to be operated, reset and operated again'to extend the' frame in a ste by step manner. VWith the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear in the following descri tion, the invention resides in the novel com ination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Fig. 1 is a longitudinal central sectional view of a device embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a similar view taken on the line 3-3 of ,Fig 1; Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on eral views, it will be observed that my invention includes a base A, rest B, extensible and collapsible legs C and lifting mechanism D interposed between the base and rest.
The base A consists of a three cornered casting, the body 10 thereof being underslung with respect to supporting casters-11 swiveled in the extremities of said casting.
T he rest B comprises a disc-like casting havlng anannular recess 12 in its lower side.
Opening into this recess 12 isan axially ar-4 ranged recess 13 and radial recesses 14, said radial recesses opening, as at 15, throughout a part of their length at the bottom of the disc. Pairsof spaced hooks 16 depend from the'lower margin of the rest B, said hooks I being arranged so that-equal distances intervene between them.
The legs C are identical, each comprising two tubular members 17 and 18 and a bar 19. The smaller tubular member 18 slides within the larger tubular member 17, while the bar 19 slides within said smaller tubular member 18. A foot 20, havingan upturned rests within a depression 22 inthe body 10 of'the base A. The inner tubular member 18 is formed with ratchet teeth 23 on the inner wall thereof and the bar 19 is formed with similar ratchet teeth 24 in the' outer edge thereof. A yielding dog 25 located at the upper end of the outer tubular member 17 serves to automatically admit of upward movement of the innertubular member 18 with respect to the outer tubular member 17 andl prevents collapsing movement of said inner member. A: spring-pressed do'g 26 arranged 'on the upper end of the inner tubularmember 18 engages the ratchet teeth 24 on the bar 19, and permits upward movement of said bar with respect to the inner tubular member 18, but automatically prevents the reverse movement thereof. F rictional resist.- ance against extension between the members. 17 18 and 19, is such that the bar 19 will be withdrawn to the limit of its upward movement from the inner tubular member 18 prior to the withdrawal of said member 18 fromV the outer tubular member 17.
The lifting mechanism D comprises a cylinder 27 having an upper head 28 and a lower head 29, the lower head being supplied with a packin gland 30. A piston d slidable within said cylinder 27 includes a piston head 31 and a push rod 32, the latter passing through the gland 30 and depending from the cylinder. lThe upper chamber in the cylinder 27 communicates through a duct 33 in the head `28 thereof and through a branch connection 34 with aflexible air main 35. Thelower end of said cylinder also communicates with said air main through a branch connection 36. 'Y Joining the air main 35 and said branch connections 34 and 36 is a valve 37. This valve is of ordinary de. sign and adapted to close the air main 35,
admit air from said main to either of said c formed by the radial recesses 14 in said rest. The end of the push rod 32 is rounded as at 39, to lit within a cup 40 formed in the body 10 of the base A. Manipulation of the valve 37 to admit air under pressure into the upper end of the cylinder 27 causes the rest B to be elevated, the legs C being extended and automatically locked against collapsing. The upward thrust of said rest B may be continued until the head 29 of the cylinder 27 engages the lower side of the piston head 31. The reach of the legs C is greater than a single working thrust of the lifting mechanism D, thus making it possible to elevate the rest beyond that position wherein it is placed upon the initial throw of the cylinder 27. The air being relieved from the upper end of the piston 27 by manipulation of the valve 37 permits the elevation of the piston Z in the cylinder 27 by hand, whereby the end of the push rod 32 may be raised considerably above the base A. I provide a block 41 (Fig. 6) having a rounded lug 42 at its lower end adapted to fit within the cup 40 in the base A and formed with a cup 43 similar to said cup 40 at its upper end. This block 41 is seated upon the body 10 of the base A, the lug 42 resting within the cup- 40. The rounded end of the push rod 32 is then seated in the cup 43 in said block and the valve 37 manipulated to again admit air into the upper end of the cylinder 27. This operation results in a second upward thrust of the rest B, which movement further extends the legs C, the same being locked as before against collapsing by the action of the dogs 25 and 26. At the beginning of the second upward thrust of the rest B, a latch 44 (Figs. 1 and 4) seated in the bar 19 engages in an opening 45 in the inner tubular member 18 and arrests further extension of the bar 19 from said leg mem-V ber 18. 1t will be understood from the above that the rest B may be elevated to any point.
Abeen lowered through the upper stage of elevation, may be depressed through the lowerstage by removing the block 41 from the base A, lowering the piston d so that the push rod 32 rests upon the base A, refilling the upper end of the cylinder 27 with air and relieving the same after the dogs 25 have been thrown into inoperative positions by engaging the arms 25a thereof with yielding catches 25h. Before the rest B is again elevated, the dogs 25 and 26 are engaged with their respective -ratchets by releasing the catches 25b and 26D.
Openings 45 (Fig. 4) in the leg members 17, 18 and 19 register when the legs are partly extended and receive pins (not shown) for locking said leg members against further extension. Pairs of hooks 46 on the base A. extending radially inward, brace the feet 20 of the legs C' against outward movement and also secure the same against upward movement. With the legs C extended 'and locked by pins against further extension, considerable working room is provided between the lower end of the cylinder 27 and the base A. 'Downward thrusts of the push rod 32 occasioned by admitting air to the upper end of the. cylinder 27 may readily ibe employed to press bushings from gears and other bearings. The hooks 46 on the base A allow the legs C'to be quickly and easily detached. thus permitting the use of lthe rest B, legs C and lifting mechanism D for other purposes, particularly as a wheel puller. the base A thereof being detached, the push rod 32 is placed against the end of an axle and the hooks 21 on the legs C passed be- In such use of my device, 1
tween and engaged with the spokes of a wheel. Admitting air to the upper end of the cylinder 27 with the device arranged as described, results in the ready detachment of a wheel 'from its supporting axle. The cylinder 27 may be detached from the rest B by turning the same laterally to free the lugs 38 from the pockets c. An apertured lug 47 on the cylinder head 28, nor-A mally lying within the recess 13 in the rest B. provides means of attachment for suitable rim spreading and contracting devices. The lower end of the push rod 32 has an opening 48 therethrough and provides means of attachment for similar devices. The admission of air into the lower part of the cylinder 27 results in driving the piston d inwardly within the' cylinder and when applied to a tire rim, as described, operates to lcontract the same. By manipulating the valve 37 to admit air into the upper end of the cylinder 27, the cylinder head 28 may be forced against a rim on one side and the push rod 32 f against thetire lrim on the opposite side thereof to expand the same. Transverse lugs 49 `on the upper ends of the bars 19l are caught over the hooks 16 on the rest B. These lugs bear in sockets 16a in said rest, when loads are carried, and are removable from the rest B to enable the detachment of the legs C therefrom. This feature in conjunction ,with the detachable arrangement of the-legs C with the base A permits of the substitu-tion of legs lbetween the base A and rest B.
Changes in the specific form of my invention, as herein disclosed, maybe made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim a-s new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. In a jack, a frame comprising a base,
'a rest, and telescoping legs supported by said base `and carrying said rest, and lifting lto mechanism interposed between the base and rest for extending the frame, said legs Ibeing detachable from the base and rest to permit the substitution of other "legs therefor.
2. In a jack, a frame comprising a base, a rest, and telescoping legs supported by said base and carrying saidrest, a unitary pneumatic lifting mechanism comprising a double headed cylinder and a piston including a head and push rod, the upper end of the cylinder being removably attached tothe under side of said rest, the lower end of the push rod having a bearing on said base, means for admitting air to and permitting the same to escape from said cyllnder upon opposite sides of the piston head, and means of attachment on'the cylinder and push rod for the application of additional devices, when the lifting mechanism is used as an operating element in other capacities.
3. In a jack, a frame comprising a base,
a rest, extensible and collapsing legs supported b the `base and carrying the rest, a unitary iftin -mechanism comprising two oppositely shiftable members, one detachably carried by the rest, the other carried by said first` member, said mechanism being normally interposed between the base and rest for extending the frame, the members of said mechanism being designed for attachment to suitable means and to operate as an expanding and contracting element and for other purposes.
