This invention relates to improvements in hand hrakesfor railway cars.

In a brake of the character described, the combination with a vertically disposed rotatable element for effecting` Winding of a flexible member, of ahousing adapted to be secured to a horizontally extendinginember, a single `faced ratchet Wheel Within the housing, rotatable in unison with said element, a horizontally swingingv operating; lever having `one end movable about said element, a vpavvl carried between the ends of said lever cooperable with said ratchet Wheel, a locking dog cooperable with said ratchet Wheel, and means including; a second lever, for effecting relative separation of the ratchet Wheel on the one hand and the pavvl and dog on the 'other hand to thereby release said'element, said paWl and dog both being located on lthe same side of said ratchet Wheel. f y
