' H. P. ANDERSON LOCOMOTIVE FIRE. BOX
,Filed May 6, 1921 Ina/er: in? 251mm? "To all whom it may] concern Patented Feb. 20, 1923 I HOVTARD Prnncn ANDERSON, orsr. Lou s, ivrrssounr; i

Application filed May 6,
Fire Boxesi'oi' which the'following' is a full,
clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled 1n the art to which 1t appertains to make and use-the same, referings, "forming part oi this specification. My invention relates to locomotive fire box construction and comprises'a new fire pan structure with. associated parts and connectioiis from same to the other portions or the fire box.
The main object of my invention is toprovide a rigid one-piece cast fire pan'adapted' to carry the refractory lining of the fire box and to prevent accidental admission of air to the interior of the fire box, such as usually takes place, where refractory lining is carried on open framework or on tubes.
I also desire to eliminate niuch of the fitting and assembling required on built-up. fire pans by'iprovidingmy cast fire pan with burner, slag, and air openings; with suitable burner, slag pocket, and door attaching flanges, and with such other ntegral elenen'ts as will appear hereinafter, and as (may be required for a complete fire pan installati'on d V (A still further object of my invention is to provide a fire box construction in which single firepan casting may be :LlSGdIII dliferentlocomotives, even th'ough the size-off the fire box-varies substantially.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of the lower portion of the fire box of a locomotive, showing my improved fire pan' 'and fire box at taching construction.
Figures 2 1s a vertical longitudinal section I I through the center-of the fire pan.

also an integral cast jst'e'el fire pan 4 which extends substantiallythroughout the bottom member 2 is provided with a depressed rim 5 which engages fiangefiof the firepan 4 vandpermits the top of'flang'efi as be flush vwith the top of member 2. A reinforcing I rib 7 is provided on memberflnear rim 5., ence being hadto the accompanying draw- I horizontal flange ,10, the latter being'ad'ap'ted to supportan oil burner 11 of any commercial type. I providea shim 12 which cooperates with flange 1 0 to direct thefiame from burner 11 as desired, the burner and I shim: being held in-adjusted position by means of bolt 1 3., v In Figure 5 I have shown a modifiedconstruction in which a burner lis mounted. I
beneath a supporting flange 15 to which the burner is secured by bolts 16. A shiml? a.
may be inserted inwardly froin bolt 1 6, as
shown, to directthe'flame from the'burn'er downwardly, or may be-positioned outward 1 from bolt 16 to direct the ;burner 'and flame upwardly; I V j Flanges 9 are provided .',withintegral bosses or lugs18 adapted to be drilled for the" insertionjof hin ge pins 19 for a door 20. 1 The inside faces of flanges 9 and-l0 adjacent the edges of door 20 will be chipped smooth to fit thejdoor. 1

22 is bolted to the bottom of pane as indicated. Surrounding opening 21'is a vertical fiange=2l which serves to retain-and protect the adjacent" edges of the reiractory maafiord a slagoutlet and a, slag pocket casting" terial. The pocket22 is: preferably cast in" one piece and isprovidedfwith door hinge lugs 28 from which is swung ad0or 24. The sides of fire pan o'asting-a aref'provided with ing is omitted" directly ;front" of these holes. On the outer face ofthecastingadr a series of parallel airinlet openings-25,,and,

To secure an adjustment in the amount of air admitted to the interiorof the fire box, I provide an integral projection 29 on the fire pan at one end of the door 28. Projection 29 has a quadrant-shaped portion 30 in which are drilled .a series of holes 31 successively spaced at increasing distances from the side of the fire pan. The end of door 28 is provided With a lug 32 and a hole 83 is drilled therein and is adapted to be aligned with any of the holes 31 in projection 29. By means of a suitable pin, the door may be secured in closed position, as shown in Figure 3, or may be secured in varying open positions by means of different holes It will be understood that the above description embodies a preferred construction of my invention, but I do not wish to be understood .as being able to use my improved fire pan only in combination with each and every one of the integral elements mentioned. In some installations it may be found desirable to provide separate attaching lugs and projections or to secure the burnerand door mountings, etc., in different manners. This may be done without departing from the essential feature of my invention which consists in constructing a fire pan from a substantially one-piece casting. Member 2 is an expedient which may sometimes be found unnecessary and the pan may be so constructed as to be secured directly to the mud ring without the interposition of another member. I contemplate such construction in the commercial development of my invention and any other variations which properly come within the scope of the following claims.
I claim:
1. In a locomotive fire box, a one-piece casting forming a fire pan provided with integral bottom and side walls adapted to extend substantially beneath an opening in the bottom of the fire box proper and up Wardly to the edges of sald opening and having an opening in one of its side walls for receiving a'burner, and an integral flange on said casting adjacent to said opening for the direction of the products of combustion from the burner.
3. In combinatlon, a locomotive fire pan casting, an openlng therein, an integral flange adjacent said opening, a movable shim supported on said flange, a burner projecting through said opening and supported at spaced points on said flange and on said shim, and a bolt holding said burner and shim in predetermined position on said flange.
4. In a locomotive fire box, a one-piece fire pan casting adapted to support the refractory bottom ofthe fire box, air and fuel inlet openings, flanges surrounding said openings, doors for said openings, and hinge pin bosses formed integral with said flanges for mounting said doors.
5. In a locomotive fire box, a fire pan casting adapted to support the refractory bottom of the fire box, a series of air inlet openings in said casting, integral lugs on the exterior of said casting adjacent said openings, and an elongated door hinged on said lugs and extending over all of said openings.
6. In a locomotive fire box, a fire pan casting adapted to support the refractory bottom of the box, air inlet openings in said casting, integral door hinge elements adjacent said openings, an integral projection adjacent said openings, and a series of holes in said projection extending outwardly from said casting.
7. In a locomotive fire box, a fire pan casting adapted to support the refractory bottom of the fire box, a series of air inlet openings in said casting, integral lugs on the exacent the end of said door, a lug on the end of said door parallel with said bracket, a
series of holes in said bracket spaced at different distances from said casting, and a hole in said door lug adapted, assaid door is opened, to be aligned with any of said bracket holes.
S. In a locomotive fire box casting, a mud ring, a refractory element carrying member extending inwardly therefrom, a depressed rim on the inner end of said member, and a one-piece fire pan casting adapted to carry refractory elements supported upon said d pressed rim and having its top face :even with the top face of said member.
9. In a locomotive fire box, a mud ring, a cast member extending inwardly therefrom, having an integral depressed rim on the inner end thereof and a reinforcing rib on its lower face adjacent to said rim, and a cast fire pan supported upon saidrim;
In testimony whereof I hereunto .afiix my signature this 27th day of April, 1921.
nowann PIERCE ANDERSON.
