To all whom it may concern Be it known that AUGUSTINE J. PooooK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in controlling means for pumps. The primary object of the invention is to provide means whereby a pump may be controlled at points remote therefrom or at points close thereto or at the place of consumption. Another object of the invention is to provide means, adapted to be used in connection with automatic pumping systems provided with storage receptacles, whereby fresh water, directly from a well may be obtained. Other ob-' jects and advantages of the invention will be described in the specification to follow and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a manually controlled switch with the casing thereof shown in section; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same with the casing shown in section; Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 4 is a diagrammatic view of the device installed in connection with an automatic controlled pump.
Throughout the specification and drawings similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts.
Referring more particularly to the draw: ings, 1 represents a pump, driven by an electric motor 2, provided with a suctionpipe 3- and a discharge pipe 4-. Extending from the discharge pipe -4 is a service pipe 5'- which leads to a valve or faucet 6-- located in this particular instance at a point remote from the pump. The motor -2-- is supplied with electrical energy through conductors -7-- and 8. When the valve or faucet --6 is opened, the circuit is closed through the agency of a switch connected in the conductors 8- and of which the following is a description.
A faucet is shown in the drawings as constituting the medium through which the flow of liquid is controlled, but it will be updei'stood that this element may be any su1t able fluid controlling element, such as a valve, depending upon the particular usage or installation of the pump.
Mounted above the faucet .-6- or fluid controlling element is a back plate 9- to which is secured a block of insulating material 10 provided with two conductors 11. having contact points -12- and binding posts 13. "The contact points 12- are adapted to be engaged by resilient contacts -14 mounted on a head of insulating material 15 and provided with binding posts 16. The head -15 is mounted on a leverv rocker 17- pivoted at 18 to the back plate. 9. The contacts 14 are moved and held out of engagement with the contacts -l2 by means in the present instance of a spring 19-:- mounted between the back plate --9 and the rocker 17-. The contacts 12 and --14- are placed in engagement by springs 32- attached to the back plate -9-- and to a head or actuator -20-- which carries ananti-friction roller -21 and has connected to it a connected rod 31 by which it is operated. The said actuator or head -20 is guided by a bifurcated plate -28 and is vertically movable". The roller -21 during part of its movement, rides on a track -22 which in the present instance is curved and is an integral part of the back plate 9. WVhen the said actuator and roller. approach the end of the upward vertical movement, the roller rides off of the upper end of the track -22 and engages the lever or rocker 17- thereby permitting the springs 32' to overcome the tension of the spring --19--, thus placing the contacts -12- and -14- in engagement. When the actuator 20- is, lowered the roller 21- rides into thetrack 22- thereby releasing the lever or rocker -17- from the tension of the springs --3Q, which permits the spring 19 to break the circuit. The binding posts -16- are, in the present instance, electrically connected by a strap -23-, while the binding posts -13 are connected to two of four binding posts --24 mounted on a plate -25 attached to the back plate 9. The. plate -25- together with a shield 26, forms a cover for the switch. The shield -26 is pivoted at -27-- to the back plate 9 which enables access to be had to the interior of the switch. The switch, above described, is connected into one side or leg of the motor circuit 7 by conductors 8 in the present instance, but it is to be understood that both sides of the .motor circuit may be connected in by utilizing all of the binding posts 13, -16 and 24. The actuator head 20- is elevated to close the switch by the faucet --6, the handle -29-- of which is provided with a crank --30 which is connected to the actuator head 20 by the rod -31--. It will be seen, that at the time the faucet 6 is opened the pump will be started and will be stopped when said faucet is closed, the pump delivering directly to the faucet during the time in which said faucet is open.
In addition to supplying'the' faucet, the pump 1-- may be used in connection with an automatic control as follows? The discharge pipe 4-- of said-pump is connected into a reservoir 33 provided with a service pipe -34. The pipe -34 leads to a valve or faucet --35 whiclf' in the present instance is mounted ina sink 36 near the faucet -6. Connected with the service pipe -34 by means of a pipe -37--, is a, pressure controlled automatic switch --40 the electrical portion of which is connected intoone of the sides of the motor circuit -7- b leads 38-. The leads -38-- cut aroun the switch controlled by the faucet -6, While the same is true of the conductors8 asto the automatic ,switch -40. By providing such a pumping" installation, a supply of water under pressure is obtained by, automatic means which makes for economy in the pumping operation; while, at the same time, fresh water for drinking purposes may be secured directly from the well and at a point remote therefrom.
The faucet -6 is open before contact between 14 and 12- is made. Upon reversing said contacts --14- and -12--' the faucet is still open. In other words contact is made and broken while the valve or faucet is open. The motor therefore is adapted to start and stop while the liquid controlling element is open and never starts against a load.
Having described-my invenion, I claim:
1. The combination with a pump, a motor to operate the same, a discharge pipe connected with said pump, a valve in said dis charge pipe, an oscillating handle for operating said valve, and an arm connected with said handle, of a switch to control the op eration of said motor, an actuating device for said switch, and an operative connection between Said actuating device and said arm.
2. The combination with a pump, a motor tooperate the same, a discharge pipe con nected with said pump, a valve in said discharge pipe, a handle for operating said valve, and a crank arm connected with said handle, of a switch to control the operation of said motor, and a reciprocatory actuating device for said switch comprising a rod connected with said arm.
3. The combination with a pump, a motor to operate the same, a discharge pipe con nected with said pump, a valve in said discharge pipe, and a handle to operate said valve, of a switch to control the operation of said motor comprising a movable member, an actuating device for. said movable member operatively connected with said handle, and means to hold said actuating device out of engagement with said member during the initial portion of its movement.
4. The combination with a pump, a motor to operate said pump, a discharge pipe con nected with said pump, a valve in said dis charge pipe, and a handle to operate said valve, of a switch to control the operation of said motor comprising a movable member, an actuating device for said movable member having both longitudinal movement and a transverse oscillating movement, an operative connection between said device and said handle to impart longitudinal movement thereto, means toimpart oscillating movement to said actuating device, and means to prevent the oscillating movement of said actuating device during the initial part of 100 its longitudinal movement.
5. The combination with a pump, a motor to operate the same, a discharge pipe connected with said pump, a valve in said discharge plpe, and a handle to operate said valve, of a switch to control the operation of said motor comprising a movable member, an actuating device for said movable member having both a longitudinal movement and a transverse movement, an operative connection between said device and said handle to impart longitudinal movement thereto, means to impart transverse movement to said actuating device, and a stationary track arranged in the path of said actuating device to hold it out of engagement with said movable member until it has completed a predetermined portion of its longitudinal movement.
6. The combination with a pump, a motor to operate the same, a discharge pipe connected with said pump, a valve in said discharge pipe, and a handle to operate said valve, of a switch to control the operation of said motor comprising a movable contact and a pivoted support for said movable contact, means to hold said movable contact normally in an inoperative position, an actuating device mounted for longitudinal movement and for transverse movement, a spring acting on said actuating device to impart transverse movement thereto, an operative connection between said actuating device and said handle, whereby the movement of said handle will impart longitudinal movement to said actuating device, and a fixed mem'- ber arranged in the path of said actuating device to hold the same against transverse movement in a direction to operate said movable contact during the initial portion of 10 its movement.
