IMPROVEMENT IN S EEDING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 14,450, dated March 18, 18-16.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, JOHN GERMAN and G. B. HOYT, of Oriskany Falls, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, haveinvented a new and Improved Seeding-Machine; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of our improvement. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the reciprocating distributing -slide. Fig. 3 is a plan or top view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
Our invention consists in the peculiar manncr of arranging the elbow-lever by which the slide-is operated, so that said slide may be operated faster or slower, according to the space or distance required between the seed, or the slide not operated at all, as will be presently shown and described.
To enable others skilled inthe art to fully understand and construct our invention, we will proceed to describe it. I
A represents the frame of the machine, to the front end of which a wheel, B, is attached, having pins on projecting'from one side, near its periphery. These pins are of varying lengths, as shown clearly in Fig. 3.
0 represents the hopper attached to the frame A, and having a reciprocating slide, D,
' placed underneath it, the slide having the outer end of a spring-plate, E, bearingagainstit, as shown in Fig. 1. The slide D is of wedge form, and is perforated with holes 12, two or more, of varying sizes or diameters.
E represents a roller, which is attached to the back part of the machine, and F is an adjustable slide-stop placed back of the reciprocating slide.
The front end of the reciprocating slide is connected by a link, 0, to the lower end of an elbow-lever, G, which works or swings on a screw rod, H, which passes transversely through an upright projection, I, on the frame A. The upper end of the elbow-lever is acted upon or raised by the projecting pins (L011 the wheel B, and the lower end of the elbow will consequently draw outward the slide D, a spring, d, attached to the elbow throwing the slide back as the upper end of the elbow-lever is freed from the pins. A reciprocating moti on is thereby given the slide, and the seed which passes from the hopperGinto the holes I) is conveyed directly over a tube, J, through which it falls into the furrow made by a share, K, at the lower end of the tube J, the outer end of the spring-plate E covering the lower ends of the holes till said holes are directly over the tube J. By adjusting thelinkc either of the holes I) may he made to move over the tube J, so that different-sized seed may be sown.
By turning the screw-rod H the upper end of the elbow-lever may be brought in line with all the pins a on the wheel B, or with only a portion of themthe larger ones-so that the slide D may be operated more or less quickly, according to the length of space required between the seed that is dropped or planted.
The elbow-lever may also be thrown out of line with all the pins, so that the slide will not be operated at all. This is necessary in ,removing the implement from place to place, and in all cases when it is not required to drop the seed.
We do not claim the reciprocating slide D, nor operating saidslide by an elbow-lever and pins attached to the wheel B; but v What we do claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Hanging the elbow-lever G upon a screw- .rod, H, so that said lever may be moved'in and out of line with a portion or all the pins a on the wheel B, for the purpose of c'ausin g the slide D to be operated faster or slower or to remain stationary, as desired.
