ADJUSTABLE FIRE-HOSE-NOZZLE SUPPORT.
Application filed. November 18, 1920. Serial No. 424,844.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, JACOB B. BLnw, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Atlantic City, county of Atlantic, and State of New Jersey, have invented an lmprovement in Adjustable Fire-Hose-Nozzle Supports, of which the'following is a speciication.
The object of my invention is to provide a portable lire hose play-pipe or nozzle support which may be quickly clamped in position upon a window sill or any available part of a building and act as an adjustable support for the hose play-pipe or nozzle while it is throwing a stream of water, the construction being such as to remove objectionable strain from the firemen in handling the hose line and play-pipe and whereby one fireman may handle the play-pipe or nozzle unassisted. i
My object is also to so construct the playpipe or nozzle supporting means that it is not only capable of adjustment in its a'- tachment to the building, but is also adapted for adjustmentto provide an immediate support for the play-pipe or nozzle, whereby the latter may have capacity for uni-v versal adjustment so as to throw the stream in whichever direction may be required.
With the above and other objects in view, the nature of which will be more fully understood from the 'description hereinafter, the invention consists in the novel construction of adjustable lire hose play-pipe or nozzle support, as hereinafter more fully described and delined in the claims.
Referring to the drawings: F ig. l is' a sectional elevation of a lire hose nozzle support, taken on line le-l of Fig. 2; Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same; Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on line 3-3 of Fig. l; Figs. 4 and 5 are diagrams illustrating the adjustable capacity of the frame structure and F ig. 6 is an elevation of the adjustable playpipe or nozzle clamp forming part of my invention. l.
In general, the frame constituting the adjustable support comprises a front frame 2 and a rear frame 3 and a connecting frame 4 at the top which is of relatively small size to which is hinged the upper ends of the front and rear frames 2 and 3 by means of transverse hinge bolts 5. The frames 2 and 3 are preferably of malleable castings and are more or less, of triangular shape and with the upper ends extended to form The top frame 4 acts as a support for a f ring shaped clamp 7 through which the lnozzle is extended and held, the said clamp provided. at it-s bottom with a vertical pin 8 loosely extending through the frame 4, and held thereon by means of a nut 9 on its lower end and preferably with a spring washer l0 interposed between the nut and the bottom of the frame 4, so that the ring shaped holder of the nozzle will tend to hold itself in any position of adjustment. The ring shaped clamp constituting the immediate holder for the nozzle is preferably formed of a U shaped socket portion ll to which is hinged an inverted U shaped topv portion l2, the two parts being jointed to one side at 13 and having the opposite ends provided with holes 14 adapted to come into alinement when the two parts are closed 'into ring shaped adjustment and in which closed position of adjustment they may be'retained by a pin l5 which may be thrust through the alined holes. To prevent the pin being lost, it` may be connected by a short chain l@ with the nozzle holder. Clamp 7 may be pivoted on a universal joint as in Fig. 6.
More specifically referring to this construction, 1l constitutes a yoke having a vertical pivot pin 8 by which it is pivoted to frame 4, and to the upper ends of the yoke there is pivoted at lll, on a transverse axis, the ring-shaped clamp 7 for the play pipe or nozzle, said clamp comprising the U shaped socket part 1l to whichy is hinged at 18 the top portion'lQ. This top clamping portion l2 may be closed down on the socket part ll and secured thereto by bolt 15 passing through alining holes 14 inthe parts 1]. and l2. By. use of this construction, the clamp T and the play-pipe or nozzle carried thereby maybe adjusted about the pivots 1lb and the axis of the bolt 8, as may be required, the device having capacity for universal adjustment. The'clamping device may be made in any other suitable manner placed in position in the rino;
tor detachably supporting end clnnfipinpthe play-pipe or nozzle.
rlFhe lower end spreadingl portions the frames 2 and 3 are provided with claws il' which may take hold upon the Window sill or other portion or' thehuilddngto .,vhieh the device is to be clamped. and these claws may be integrally tixed to tie loiverends ot the frames or adjusted thereto. i shown in 'connection w the rear treme 3. ln this case, the clevcs are termed on the het toms or' rods i8 which are adjustable lomiH tudinally in sockets i9 in the lower er the frame Si and in adjusted position which the;v may be clamped oy set- 20. By extending the rods.y a etree n' pacity is given to the device as e whole tor clamping upon Wider or n lf or rrower sills other objects to which the device is required to be clamped. li desired, the efllustehility of the claws may be dispensed with end the clawsv formed lizfzedly upon the lower ends of the 'trames themselves. As shov each of the iframes 2 and 3 are provided with lsockets 2l in which jrrunnions 22 oit blocks are jonrnaled, and seid trunnions held in place by light straps 24YT extending); over the trunnions and riveted in place upon the iframes. ln this manner the blocks' are free to adjust themselves on the transverse aires provided by the trunnions. llrrtending; through the blocks 223 on the rear iframe 2% is an adjusting serevifv threaded rod 25 `which is shouldered on the outer sine to lit against the block and is provided on the ,inner side with a coller 26 pinned in place so v'that the screw three-ded rod is not germitted to shi'l't longitudinally in respect to this block. The other or 'tree end ot the screw threaded rod extends through a screuY threaded hole in the other block 23 on the front iframe, and moreover the rear end olf the screw threaded rod may be provided with 'a handle 28 in crank or other 'form by which it may be readily rotated when adinsting` the two trames' 2 and El toward or from each other. llt will now be understood that when the two frames 2 and 3 are spread so 'that the claws thereolI may he placed in proper position upon the Window sill and the screw threaded rod rotated, said ' trames 2 and 3 Will be drawn toward each other until the claws tightly grip upon thesill. l/ilhen this takes' place, the fire hose nozzle may be y slieped clamp 7 and supported therelgiy Without the uecessity ot relying; upon the iiremen to' hold it. in a vertical plane to throw 'the stream obliquely upward or downward er horizontally, as the case may be, by merely applying pressure to the hose which cese the top frame l will be oscillated and the front and back trames 2 and 8 Will adjust themC selves automatically to permit such adjust- Thereaiiter7 the hose muy be adjustefgl rei/ieee@ ei seid Jler-ord; and hack Ynnen the claws to the l. .in er With the top the olay L l such manner that in vertical or horizv out any iurth with the sill The ring sha pipe ori nozzle oscilleti i oy e 27 carried by trie top 'i aine and -which may hV radially nipulated when desired. is also evident that any degree ot 'L-iction may be put upon the jointed connection ot the parts 2.y L l by simply tightening the nuts uoonghe Dlat s mid the vertical oit' the ringl shaped hose ciampi, whereby under f reasonable hun j oit the hose the sama 'fll r tuin its adjusted position. .lt will, there `lore7 be only under special conditions that the clamping means will be necessary.
ln praet :ee this adjustable supporting.;` ineens io'r the ploy-pipo or nozzle, while intended lai ly 'for adjustment the v7`indow sill ivi; Uher the hose plav pipe or nos zle is 'to be operated Yfrom the inside of the building outward to direct the stream to lnirning` buildings or other portions o'l the seme building'S or Whether it is to be loperated troni the outside of the buildi for projectie l 'for the hose lie-lil a stream into the huiloing', never the-less, the adjustability et the 'clampingor to vertical posts or to n. plank which itsel'l mad be nailed to the door a place. llloreoven the whole construction is light and portshle find easily transportedor use Wherever neeessary have shownthe apparatus as mede largely olf malleable castings and Whilel prefer this menner oit making the parts, ll do not confine myself thereto.
lt will nov,7 be apparent that l Ahevedevised a novel and useful construction which embodies the features ot advantaee enumerated as fflesirable, and while l, have 'in the present instance shown and described the preferred embodiment thereof' which has been 'found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable it is 'to be understood that l do not restrict myselit to the details, es the seme are susceptible oi modification in various perticulars -Withont departing 'from the spirit or scope ot the invention.
