SEWARID W. HECOX, OF ZEELAN'D, MICHIGAN.
CABINET PHONOGRAPH.
Application filed December 27, 1921. Serial No. 525,087.
7 '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SEWARD W. Hnopx, a citizen of the United States, residing at Zeeland, county of Ottawa, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful mprovements in Cabinet Phonographs, of whichithe following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in cabinet phonographs.
The main objects of the invention are: First to provide an improved cabinet phonograph in which the volume of tones may be reatly varied and at the same time clear and full tones may be secured throughoutthe variations.
Second, to provide an improved cabinet phonograph which is compact in structure and attractive in appearance both when idle and when in use.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of the invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearlydefined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of myinvention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this application, in which:
Fig. I is a front perspective view of my improved cabinet with the doors closed.
Fig. II is a vertical section from front to rear on a line corresponding to line 2-2 of Figs. I and III.
Fig. III is a horizontal section on aline corresponding to line 3-3 of Figs. I and II.
In the drawing similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views, and the sectional .Views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines.
Referring to the drawing, I provide a cabinet, designated generally by the numeral 1. This cabinet has a sound discharge chamber 2 at the top with sound openings 3 in the side walls thereof. These sound openings are in the structure illustrated covered with fabric, although grills may be used if desired.
Below this sound discharge chamber and in spaced relation to its bottom 4 is a. supporting plate 5 for the motor, shown conventionally at 6, the tone arm 7, turntable 8, and the amplifier member 9. The turntable and tone arm are mounted on this supporting plate in the compartment 10 between the plate and the sound discharge chamber, while the motor and amplifier are mounted on the under side of the plate. The amplifier is mounted so that the tone arm discharges thereto and to discharge through an opening 11 in the rear of the plate 5. The bottom 4 is providedwith an opening 12 aligned with the opening 11. An adjustable wall plate-13 is hinged at its upper end so as to close against the piece 14, as shown in full lines in Fig. II, thereby entirely closing or cutting off the compartment 10 from the amplifier discharge opening 11 and forming with the walls of the cabinet a conduit connecting this discharge opening 11 with the sound discharge chamber through the opening 12.
The wall plate 13 may be adjusted by the link 15 on the fingerpiece 16.
To cut off or partially cut off the connection between the amplifier and the sound discharge chamber so that all of the sound waves are delivered through the compartment 10 or partially through the compartment 10 and partially through the sound chamber, the compartment 10 is provided with doors 17 With this arrangement, the volume of tone may 'be very materially varied without materially affecting its quality.
I have not. attempted toillustrate or describe other modifications or adaptations of my. invention, as I believe the disclosure made will enable those skilled in the art to which my invention relates to embody or adapt the same as may be desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a cabinet having a. sound discharge chamber at the top, a supporting plate mounted within said cabinet in a spaced relation to the bottom of said chamber providing a compartment adapted tore ceive the turntable. and the tone arm of a phonograph, an amplifier member mounted .on the under side of said supporting plate for operative association with a tone arm in said compartment to discharge upwardly at the rear of said plate, the bottom of said chamber having an inlet opening aligned with said amplifier discharge, and an adjustable wall plate mounted at the rear of said compartment and adapted when in one position to cut off said compartment from the amplifier discharge and connect the same with said sound chamber inlet opening or to be adjusted to partially or entirely cut off said sound discharge chamber and correspondingly open said con'ipa-rtment to the amplifier discharge.
2 In a structure of the class described, the combination of a cabinet having a sound discharge chamber at the top and a compartment below said chamber adapted to receive the turntable and the tone arm of a phonograph, an amplifier member mounted below said compartment foroperative association with a tone arm disposed in said compartment and to discharge upwardly at therear of said compartment, said chamber having an inlet opening aligned with said amplifier discharge, and an adjustable wall plate mounted at the rear of said compartment and adapted when in one position to cut off said compartment from the amplifier dis charge and connect the same with said sound chamber inlet opening or to be adjusted to partially or entirely out off said sound discharge chamber and correspondingly open 'said compartment to the amplifier discharge.
3. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a cabinet having a sound discharge chamber at the top and a compartment below said chamber adapted to receive the turntable and the tone arm of a phonograph, an amplifier member mounted below said compartment for operative association with a tone arm disposed in said compartment'and to discharge upwardly at the rear of said compartment said chamber having an inlet opening aligned with said amplifier discharge, and adjustable wall plate mounted at the rear of said compartment and adapted when in one position'to cut off said compartment from the amplifier discharge and connect the same with said sound chamber inlet. I
4. In a structure of the class described, the combination of a cabinet, a supporting plate mounted within said cabinet providing a compartment above said plate adapted to receive the turntable and tone arm of a phonograph, an amplifier member mounted on the under side of said supporting plate for operative association with a tone arm in said compartment and to discharge upwardly at the rear thereof, and an adjustable wall plate mounted at the rear of said compartment and adapted to cut off or partially cut ofi said compartment from the amplifier discharge.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
