To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER C. Bnnnows, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Montreal, Province of Quebec, Dominion of Canada, have invented new and useful Improvements in a. Soap Flaker and Distributor, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the supply of soap for use in connection with hand basins and has for its object to furnish a suitable amount of soap in dry flaked form from a receptacle conveniently situated adjacent to the basin.
A further object is to provide a ready means of converting solid or caked soap into flaked soap and of feeding the same as required.
A further object is to provide a supply of soap in public or semi-public places with economy and without the objection of the general and indiscriminate use of a common cake in lavatories and wash-rooms.
A further object is to provide a means of supplying the necessary consumption of soap without the opportunity of pilfering or useless waste.
' I am aware that containers of liquid soap have been in use and that the use of soap in powdered or flaked form is not new, but I believe that my invention supplies a need that has existed hitherto.
Reference is made tothe annexed drawings in which Figure 1 is a side view of a container and feed device one half in section.
Figure 2 is a vertical cross section of the flaking mechanism.
Figure 3 is a vertical cross section of the feed mechanism.
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the cylinder containing the flaking mechanism showing its perforated bottom.
Figure 5 is a cross section of the cylinder and piston.
Figure 6 is a perspective view of the flaking wheel and its spindle.
Figure 7 is a perspective view of the means of pressing the solid soap upon the flaking wheel. I

The container 1 has a cover 2 and a hopper shaped bottom 3 with an outlet 38 into the bell shaped valve 4.
Inside the container 1 fits a cylinder 10 with a perforated bottom 12 having'a central bearing 11 and teeth 120.
The flaking wheel 20 on the spindle 21 has two sets of radiating teeth one set 22 vertical and the other set 23 horizontal. The spindle 21 has an extension 24 that passes through the bearing 11.

A zig-zagfwire 30 secured to the end 24 of'the spindle 21 supports a cone 31' from which a Zig-zag wire 32 extends downwards through the outlet 33 of the hopper 3.
A tube '41 is removably attached to the outlet 33 and a short cylinder 42 of larger diameteris secured to the bottom of the tube 41-by wires 4343. v p
A piston 44 fits the cylinder 42 and is bored and threaded to mesh with the pin 46. The cylinder 42 has two ribs 49 and the piston 44 has grooves 45 its sides as shown in Figure 5.

i The operation of my invention is as follows :-The soap in pieces of any suitable size are placed under the disc 14 and "are pressed downwards against the flaking wheel 20. When the spindle is rotated by means of a crank or ratchet, the lower surface of the soap is flaked by the teeth of the wheel 20. The perforations of the bottom 12 permit the flaked soap to fall into the hopper 3 and through the opening 33 into the tube 41 where it rests on-thepiston An upper disc 25' centrally bored, forms 44. By pushing the ball upwards by the palm of the hand a small quantity of the flaked soap is forced over the upper edge of the cylinder 42 by the upward movement of the piston 41% and falls onto the palm of the hand. 7
By varying the position of the piston aid in the bell 47 by means of the threaded pin 46 a greater or less amount of the flaked soap can be forced out as required.
The cone over the outlet supports the weight of the flaked soap and prevents packing, while the zigzag wire rotating with the spindle provides means for loosening the flaked soap.
I claim I 1. In a soap flaker and distributor; the combination of a container having a perforated bottom, means to flake soap therein, and a hopper with means to disturb the material in the hopper, an outlet thereunder, with a valve attached to the outlet, adapted to feed a small quantity of flaked soap when the valve is operated.
2. In a device of the class specified, the combination of a soap flaking mechanism, having a hopper thereunder, means to disturb the material in the hopper, with a valve attached to the outlet of the hopper, adapted to feed a small quantity of flaked soap when operated by upward pressure.
3. In a device of the class specified, the combination of a soap flaking mechanism, comprising a rotatable flaking wheel, means to press the soap upon the flaking wheel, a perforated bottom, and a hopper thereunder, means to disturb the material in the hopper, with a valve attached to the outlet of the hopper, adapted to be operated by upward pressure. In a device of the class specified, the comblnation of a soap flaking mechanism, comprislng a rotatable toothed flaking wheel on a vertical spindle,means to press the soap upon the flaking wheel, a perforated bottom, a hopper thereunder, means to disturb the material in the hopper, and a hopper outlet, with a valve attached to the outlet, adapted to be operated by upward pressure.
5. In a device of the class specified, the combination of a soap flaking mechanism, comprising a rotatable toothed flaking wheel on a vertical spindle, a disc under spring tension to press the soap upon the flaking wheel, a perforated bottom, a hopper thereunder, means to disturb the material in the hopper and hopper outlet, with a valve attached to the outlet, adapted to feed a small quantity of flaked soap when operated by upward pressure.
6. In a device of the class specified, a flaking mechanism, comprising a cylinder, a perforated bottom with a central bearing therein, an upper disc with a central bearing, a
vertical spindle journalled in the said bearings, a flaking wheel on the said spindle, adjacent to the said bottom, a lower disc centrally bored to travel the spindle, having teeth projecting from its lower side, and a coil spring between the discs, and means to rotate the spindle and flaking wheel.
7. In a device of the class specified, a flak ing mechanism comprising a cylinder with a vertical rib projecting inwardly, a. per forated bottom with a central bearing thereto, an upper disc with a central bearing, a vertical spindle journalled in the saidbearings, a flaking wheel on the said spindle, adjacent to the said bottom, a lower disc centrally bored to travel on the said spindle, and notched to receive the said rib, teeth projecting from its lower side, a coil spring between the said discs, and means to rotate the spindle and flaking wheel.
8. In a device of the class specified, a flaking wheel having radiating spokes, with series of vertical and horizontal teeth projccting from the spokes.
9. In a device of the class specified, the combination of a flaking mechanism having a perforated bottom, with a hopper outlet thereunder, a cone suspended above the out let, a zig-zag wire secured to the spindle of the flaking mechanism supporting the cone, and a zig-zag wire dependent from the cone.
10. In a device of the class specified a flaking mechanism comprising a perforated bottom with teeth projecting upwardly, a flaking wheel with vertical and horizontal teeth, and a hopper outlet thereunder.
11. In a device of the class specified a valve comprising a tube from outlet, a cylinder of greater diameter attached thereunder, a piston in the said cylinder. a bell shaped cover surrounding the cylinder, adapted to slide vertically on the said tube and connected with the piston at the lower edge.
12. In a device of the class specified .a valve comprising a tube from outlet, a cylinder of greater diameter attached thereunder, a piston in the said cylinder, a bell shaped cover surrounding the cylinder, adapted to slide vertically on the said tube, a ball headed pin secured to the piston, and to the lower rim of the bell shaped cover.

In a device of the class specified a valve comprising a tube from the outlet, a cylinder of greater diameter thereunder, opposite vertical ribs inside the cylinder, a piston with vertical grooves to mesh with the said ribs, a ball headed threaded pin adapted to enter a-thre'aded bore in the said piston and a bell shaped cover surrounding the cylinder, adapted to slide vertically on the said tube, having its lower rim secured to the said pin. x Q
