E. ALLEN ET AL ROAD AND DITGH MACHINE Filed Sept. 26, 1921 Patented Feb. 6, 1923..
a. Lara ROAD AND BITCH MACHINE.
Application filed September 26, 1921.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, llvnnnrrn ALLEN and F LOYD ALLEN, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Clare, in the county of Clare and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Road and Ditch Machines, of which the following is a specification.
Our present invention relates generally to road and ditch machines, and more particularly to a scraper of that type embodying a flat body, our object being the provision of a scraper which can be operated with minimum power in hard ground and which may be used with equal facility in soft, mucky or hard uneven surfaces. A further object is the provision of a flat scraper having means by which when loaded the scraper may be simply released by the operator and Wlll carry its load to the point of disposition and a still further object is the provision of a scraper of this type having a strong selfsharpening blade. l i In the accompanying drawing which lllustrates our prevent invention and forms a part of this specification,
Figure 1 is aperspective View looklng y from the front of our improved scraper,
Figure 2 is a perspective view looking from the rear thereof, and
Figure 3 is a longitudinal section taken substantially on line 33 of Figure 1..
Referring now to these figures we provide a. scraper including a flat body 1.0 consisting for instance of a series of transversely disposed planks in edgewise contacting relation secured by battens along its rear or undersurface, certain of which may be metal battens 11 as seen in Figure 2 and certain of which may be wooden battens 12, to the latter of which the beams 13 of handles 14. are connected.
The handles 14: preferably curve rearwardly beyond the upper rear edgeof the body 10, the latter of which has laterally extended portions 15 adjacent to its opposite edge and is provided with a blade 16 extending along and beyond said last mentioned edge and along the laterally extended portions 15, it being noted that this blade is transversely curved throughout its length to provide a forward concave face so that its edge 17 will be self-sharpening as it is dragged over the ground, particularly hard Serial No. 503,266.
In addition to the foregoing features the fiat scraper provided by our invention has rear runners 22, each in the nature of a substantially semicylindrical shoe formed of a bent plate Whose opposite ends are flanged and securely fastened at longitudinally spaced points upon the rear surface of the fiat body 10 adjacent to opposite sides of the body and near its lower forward blade carryin edge.
11 use our improved scraper is such as to render .it comparatively easy to cut and move hard ground as well as to regulate the ex act depth of cut with the handles 14. lVhen the scraper in use is loaded it is also a simple easy matter to tilt the same back on the runners and then release the handles whereupon. the scraper will carry the load to a desired point of disposition even up steep inclines by Virtue of the character and disposition of the runners.
Our improved scraper may be utilized in manly instances in soft as well as hard surfaces where the scrapers now employed are of little value and by curving the blade at the lower portion of the fiat body we provide for greater strength and for self-sharpening of the cutting edge.
We claim:
A road scraper having a fiat body provided with laterally extended portions at its front edge, a blade secured along the said front edge of the body and along the said extended portions thereof, rails spaced from the side edges of the body, having inturned mg rear curved portions extending between signatures.
upper ends secured to the body and having the body, runners upon the rear of the body their lower ends connected to the said exand handles secured to the body and project tended portions, draw bars extending foring rearwardly beyondthe same as described. 10 werdly from opposite sides of the body hav- In testimony whereof We have afiixed our the sides of the body and said rails, secured EVERETTE ALLEN.
at their ends to the said extended portions of v ,7 FLOYD ALLEN.
