To all 'whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, TALBor LnNNoX, a citizen of the United States, and av resident of Marshalltown, in the county of Marshall and the Altate of Iowa', have invented a certain new and useful Handle for Metal Baskets, of which the `following is a specification.
rEhe objects of my invention are to provide simple, durable and inexpensive means for connecting together the ends oi' a rope and for securing same to a basket or the like in such a manner as t-o provide a convenient and ,eiiicient handle which has a i'ree pivotal movement with relation to the'basket.
My invention consists in the construction, arrangement and combination ofthe device for holding together the ends of therope handle .and a clip for pivotally supporting said device and attaching saine to a basket oi' the like whereby the objects contemplated are attained, as hereinafter more fully set YAr'orth, pointed out in my claims,v and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which: l y

Referring to the accompanying drawings I have used the reference numeral 10 to indicate that part of the sheet metal basket shown. The top edge of the basket is provided with enlarged rounded bead 11.`
The body portion of my improved handle is formed of a single piece of rope 12 with.
its ends brought together, thus forming a loop. I haveprovided a device for holding together the ends of the rope, and at the same time forming a pivotal bearing for attaching the ends of the ropev to the metaly basket as follows: y

In each of `the grooves '14 I have provided a vsplit ring 16' made of relatively heavy wire, the end portions of which areextended through the loop 15, and the part that projects through saidl loops is preferably beveled or inclined at '17.

For securing the device l like, I have provided sheet metal clips.- The outer side of this clip designed to lie against the outer surface' of the basket, is formedl at toabasket or the l its lower yend .with a flat portion 18, and l above this is an outwardlyextending semicylindrical'portion 19. In this semi-cylindrical portion near its ends are the youtwardly extending ribs 20. The top is formed vinto a loop 21 to pass over the beadfll at the top of the lbasket and the inner sidev is formed flat-at 21 to lie against the inner surface of the basket, then the -entire vdevice is rivets 22 extendingthrough'the lower portion of the clip an-d alsovthrough the basket itself. When this has been done, a powerful pressure is applied to the vsplit rings tending to bring their ends tolgether and also'tobend over theV ends to lock 'the parts firmly together. By this arrangement, it is obvious no leXtra movement is required for loc-king` together the ends of the split rings after sufficient pressure has been applied to bring' theirends together and to firmly clamp the `rope within them.
ln applying the handles thus made to the basket, it is only necessary toplace the 'cylin-` drical portion off the handle in the semicylindrical recess ot' the clip and then place i rthe clip aga-inst the basket and bend the inner portion of the clip against the inner face of the basket, and finally rivet through thevlover end ofthe clip and the basket. VVhen'this has beendone the annular 'ribs on the. cylindrical part of the handle and the annular grooves onthe interior of the clip vvill perform the tivo functions of posi ,tivel areve'ntino"longitudinal movement of Yl e the rope, and at the same timefreely permitting ahinged or pivotalmovement of the rope.A l lclaim as my invention:
l. In a 'handle of the class described, the ycombination of a. loop shaped grip portion,
a metallic connecting member designed tol f receive the ends ofthe grip portion, tivo open rings applied to the connecting` member near 'its ends 'and designed when closed to force "the connecting-member firmly against the grip member to prevent movement ol its endsfrelative to each other.

In a. handle of the class described, the combination of'a -loops'haped vgrip portion, a metallic connecting member designed to re- 'ceive the ends yofthe grip portion,`tivo open rings applied to the connecting member near its ends and designed Whenl closed toV force the connecting member firmly aga-inst vthe grip memberto prevent movement of its ends relative to each other, and also to form anniilar ribs on the exterior of the connecting member, and a clip memberifor fastening the handle to an article, said clip member having grooves to receive said annular ribs and to permit rotary movement and to prevent longitudinall movement.
3. In handle, Vthe combination of a rope and a connecting member, the latter being made of cylindrical forni and open on. one side and having `annular depressions near its ends, and tvvo open rings in said annular depressions, said. connecting member being so arranged that the rope ends may be easily inserted in it and then when the open rings are forced together the annular depressions ivill'be Eorced into Lthe rope by said rings and tl e connecting rmember will. be firmly held in position by the rings.
