w. TANKERSLEY.
GAs MIXER. FILED MAY 20. 1921.
Patented Jan. 30, 1923.
UNE
WAYNE TAN KERSLEY, OF FRANKFORT, INDIANA.
GAS M Application filed May 20,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, lVAYNE TANKERSLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Frankfort, in the county of Clinton and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Gas Mixer, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices commonly known as gas mixers, it being the primary object of the invention to provide a novel form of mixing device to be positioned within the manifold of an internal c0mbustion engine, at a point between the carburetor and engine cylinders for breaking up the particles of gas which has not been thoroughly broken up by their passage through the carburetor.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character having novel means for securing the same within the manifold of the engine, the securing means operating by frictional contact with the walls of the manifold.
VVith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing Figure l is a sectional view through a manifold of an internal combustion engine, showing the inventiton as applied.
Figure 2 is an elevational view of the device, positioned in the manifold.
Figure 3 is a front elevational view of the mixer; and
Figure 4 is a sectional view taken on line 4.-t of Figure 3.
Referring to the drawing in detail, the
device is shown as positioned in the intake IXER.
1921. Serial No. 471,036.
manifold 5 of an internal combustion engine at a point adjacent to the end thereof that connects with the engine cylinder, it
being understood however that the showing of the drawing only includes one end of an intake manifold.
The device comprises an outer collar 7 and an inner sleeve 8, the collar 7 being provided with an inwardly extending flange 9 providing an abutment and seat for the baf= fie 10 which is formed of fine mesh material and provided with an inwardly extending circumferential flange 11 adapted to lie between the collar 7 and sleeve 8, to support the baffle in proper relation \with respect to the manifold in which the same ispositioned.
Laterally extending fingers 12 form a part of the collar 7 and these fingers are of constructions to frictionally contact with the inner surface of the intake manifold 5 to support the device therein. In view of the structure of the fingers 12, it will be seen that the device may be easily positioned within a manifold, and by rotating the same in a predetermined direction, the fingers will frictionally engage the walls of the manifold to secure the device against move ment.
l/Vhat is claimed as new is A mixing device comprising a collar, a sleeve positioned in the collar, a baffle formed of wire mesh material disposed within the collar and contacting with the sleeve, and resilient fingers forming a part of the collar for frictionally engaging the walls of the manifold for securing the device therein.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
WAYNE TAINKERSLEY;
Witnesses: I I I GILES S. Moons, O'r'ro -MOORE.
