UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM SCHAAKE, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC AND MANUFACTURING COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF PENNSYLVANIA.
STRAIN CLAMP.
Application filed June 30.
To all "whom it may concern: h
Be it known that I, VVILLIAM fionaann, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Strain Clamps, of which the followlng is a specification.
My invention relates to conductor clamps and particularly to suspension strain clamps for dead-endin conductors.
One object 0 my invention is to provide a device of the above indicated character that shall be simple and durable in construction, economical in manufacture and effective in operation.
Another object of my invention is to provide a suspension strain clamp that shall be easy to manipulate and that shall employ standard machine bolts instead of the special .T-bolts commonly employed.
Heretofore, it has been usual. in suspension strain clamps, to employ Special bolts of substantially J -shape to clamp a conductor in the channel of a channeled body member. These bolts are comparatively diflicult to manipulate and, unless they are removed entirely, they must be turned about their axes to move them from position over the channel. This movementrequires a certain clearance distance between them, thus rendering the clamp unnecessarily long. Being of special construction, the J-bolts are also more difiicult to replace .in case of damage thereto or loss thereof.
In practicing my invention, I so substitute a plurality of transversely slidable clamping dogs or plates for the J-bolts as to permit the use of standard machine bolts. The arrangement permits the structure to be compact and neat in appearance, of ready manipulation and very effective in open ationl Figure 1, of the accompanying drawings, a side elevational view of suspension strain clamp constructed in accordance with my lllYGHtlOl], in association with a usual dcad-ending suspension insulator tl.1erefor, and
Fig. 2 is a view taken along the line ITII of-Fig. 1.
In general, a dead-ending suspension strain device, embodying a clamp of my invention, includes an insulator 1, here shown 1921. Serial No. 481,511.
as of the well known cap-and-pin type, comprising a cap 2 having a clevis 3, or other means for attachment to a support (not shown), an insulating body member 4 and a pin 5. A link 6 is attached, at one end, to the outer end of the pin 5, by a pin 7 and 1s slmilarly attached, at its other end, to a clamp 8 by a pin 9. An arcing member or horn 10 may be secured to the clamp 8 by a clamping device 11 to direct flash-over arcs away from the insulating body member 4 and to thereby prevent damage thereto.
The clamp 8 is provided with a channeled portion 12 or the reception of one end 13 of a conductor 14, the main body of which may, as indicated in Fi 1, extend in a horizontal direction, wit% the end 13 inclined downwardly in the channel 12. Ends 15 and 16 of the channeled portion 12 are flared outwardly, the latter having an under curved portion 17 of relatively great radius to prevent an acute or sharp bend in the conductor 14 and the consequent concentration of fracturing tension forces at the bend.
An elongated shelf or flange 18, at one side of the channel 12, is provided with a plurality of openings for the reception of standard machine bolts 19 having nuts 20 thereon, and is also provided, at its outer edge, with a raised or semi-cylindrical portion 2], as best shown in Fig. 2. The portzon 21 constitutes positioning means fora plurality of clamping dogs or plates 22 that extend transversely to the channel 12 and have portions 23 conforming to the semicylindrical portion 21.
Each clamping dog or plate 22 is of substantially arch or C-shape, with the portions 23 constituting one end thereof and a portion 24 having a groove of substantially \l'shape constitut ng the other end thereof. an elongated slot 25, in each of the plates 22, extends transversely to the conductor 14 from a position substantially at the center of the V-groove portion 24 to a position over one of the bolt openings in the flange 18, so that one of the bolts 19 may extend therethrough. The portion 24 projects into the channel 12 to engage the conductor 14.
Tn the operative or clamping position, as shown' in the drawing, the bolts 19 are screwed ti htly against the plates 22 to firmly we ge the V-groove portions 24 secured in opei against the ('iOllfiilUCtHl. l -2- and to securely position the portion 2 on the semi-cylindrical portions 21.
By releasing the nuts 20, on the bolts 19, the clamping" plates 22- ma v be released 'lrou'i clamping position on the conductors lot and,
by reason of the slots 25, may be Sl'llfliwil transversely with respect to the channel 12 to permit the Withdrawal of the conductors.
The clan'iping plates 12 thus have simple the spirit and scope thereoil, as set forth in] I claim as my invention:
1.5x conductor clamp comprising two clamping members slidably movable with respect to each other along a line normal to the conductor to receive and release the latter and means tor exerting a clamping action between said members along a line at substantially right angles to said line.
2. A clamp comprising a conductor-receiving member, a clamp member for co-' operation therewith, one of said members having; elongated bolt-receiving portion, and a bolt extending at substantially right angles to said portion and supported on the other member, the arrangement of parts permitting the clamp member to be moved aside to receive or ren'iove a conductor While the bolt remains in mounted position and permitting the clamp member to be secured in operative position by the bolt.
8. fr clamp comprising a conductor-re ceiving member, a clamp mon tor for cooperation therewith, one'of said members having' an elongated slot and a bolt extendinn through said slot and supported on the other member; the arrangement oi parts perinitting the clamp member to be moved aside to receive or remove a conductor While the bolt remains in mounted position permitt' fiber to be 'ative po ti by-the bolt,
4;. A strainclamp comprising a conduo torreceivi channel member having a plurality of transverse openings a plurality of clamping plates each having an elongated.
to be moved. aside to receive or remove the liar,
slot extending transversely to said channel and a grooved conductor-clampingportion disposed. over the channel and fastening;- members extending through each of, said siotsand into each of said transverse openings. p
In a strain clamp the combination With a conductor-receiving member, oi a clamp having an elongated slot and a clamping portion and a bolt extending through said slot and supported on said member, the arrangement of parts permitting said clamp to be moved aside to receive or remove a conductoinwhile the bolt remains in mounted position and permitting; said clamp to be secured in operative position by said bolt.
6. A clamp comprising a member having a conductor-receiving portion and an opening extending transversely to said portion a clamping member having an elongated slot extending transversely to said portion and a portion for engagement with the conductor and a fastening member in said opening and extending through said slot, the arran 'e nent of parts permitting said plate conductor Without remov 4 said fastening member and permitting said clamp to be secured in operative position bysaid fasteninn member. r
7. A clamp comprising a member having a condodot-receiving channel. and an open ing extending transversely to said channel at one side thereof, a second member having a conducater-clamping ,cgjroo'ved port-ionover saiz'l channel and an elongated slot extending transversely to the channel to a position over said opening; and fastening member disposed in said opening and said slot to clamp said members against a conductola 8. A clamp con'iprising a member having a conductorreceiving: channeland an opening extending; transversely to said channel at one side tl'iereoit, sale, member also liming a positioning portion. at one side oi? the channel, a second member l'nrving a condue tor-clamping grooved portion over said channel and an elongated slot extending transversely to the channel to a position ore d member also a conductor. 7 in testimony who i l. suhsiirrilimfl in name this 225% VJILLI A M Fl UH AA KID.
