TBIMMING MECHANISM FOR SEWING MACHINES.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL Gnonsn TATE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trimming Mechanism for Sewing Machines, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the figures of reference marked thereon.
The invention relates to new and useful improvements in trimming mechanisms for sewing machines, and more particularly to a trimming mechanism having horizontally disposed trimming blades for trimming upturned edges of fabric sections which are to be subsequently abutted or slightly overlapped and then united to form a flat seam.
In certain classes of garment makin it is very desirable to stitch some of the se ams on machines having a suspended work-snpporting arm, off from the end of which the stitched garment section passes. This enables tubular sections to be formed.
An object of the present invention is to provide a sewing machine having a standard, a forwardly projecting arm carried thereby, a depending support at the outer end of the arm, and a work support suspended by said depending support and terminating adjacent the standard with a trimming mechanism having horizontally disposed trimming blades operated by a main shaft extending through the standard.

The machine in which my invention is em bodied consists broadly of a main standard, which carries a suspended work supporting arm. The material to be stitched is fed off from the end of this work supporting arm. The work supporting arm is carried by a section of the frame, which, as shown in the drawings, also supports the needle bar carrying the needles for stitching the fabric sections. The needle bar is operated by a cross-shaft which in the present embodiment of the invention is the main shaft of the machine. The material is held on the work support by a presser foot. The trimming members operate upon the upturned fabric edges of the material, which subsequently passes underneath the presser foot and are stitched together to form a flat seam. One of these trimming members is stationary and the other is movable and the movable trimming member is carried by a yoke journaled to swing on the auxiliary bar which guides the presser foot, and this yoke is in turn operated by a direct connection with the main shaft which operates the needles.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, I have shown my improved trimming mech anism as applied to a sewing machine having a supporting standard 1, from which a laterally projecting arm 2 projects, and this arm 2 carries a forwardly projecting arm 3, having a depending support 4;, which. in turn carries the work-supporting arm 5 of the machine.
Mounted in the standard and extending through the projecting arm 2 is a main shaft 6. This main shaft 6 operates a crossshaft 7 in the arm 8, and, this in turn through suitable connections, operates the feeding mechanism, which is located in the arm 5, and also the looper mechanism carry-- ing the looper co-operating with the needles. The arm 5 is suspended so that the material to be stitched may be placed underneath the same anclthe edges to be joined are brought over the top of the arm and led underneath the presser foot, which is indicated at 8 in the drawings. This presser foot is carried by a presser bar 9, which is mounted in suitable bearings in the arm 2 of the frame. Adjacent the presser bar 9 is a guide bar 10, which is connected at 11 to the presser foot and which may also be suitably connected to the presser bar 9. This guide bar is of the usual construction and serves not only to guide the presser bar in its up and down movements, but also to prevent the presser footfrom swinging laterally on its supporting bar 9 owing to the strain thereon of the trimming mechanism. v p 7 The stationary trimming blade is indicated at 12 in the drawings. This blade is clamped by a screw 13 and a cooperating clamping plate to the presser foot. The presser foot is formed with a dove-tailed recess to receive the stationary blade, which is similar inshape, as clearly shown in Figure l of thedrawings. This is the usual manner of securing a stationary blade to the presser foot. The prcsser foot is termed with a ,uiding slot 14:. through. which the upturned edges otthe fabric sections which. are to be joined'pass. The stationary trim ming blade 12 has its cutting edge terminating substantially at the guiding slot 14, so that the upturned edges will pass along the cutting edge of this stationary blade. Cooperating with the stationary blade is a movable trimmingblade 15; These blades are horizontal and the movable trimming blade crosses the guiding slot? 14 and co operating with the stationary blade trims the upturned edges of the fabric sections. After the edges-of the. fabric sections have been trimmed, they are brought either to abutted or overlapped relation and then are stitched by a stitching mechanism," as herein shown, consisting of three needles 16, which pass through suitable opening in the presser foot and the looper mechanism, re
ferred to above, cooperates with these nee dles'. .As' herein shown, the looper mechaa shaft 18,"vvhich is operated by suitable connections from the sha ft'i, above described. Theneedles 16 are carried'by a needle bar 19 which reciprocates in suitable bearings 20-20 in the arm 2 of the frame. The main shaft 6 is provided with a crank 21. A link 22 cooperates with this crank andis connected with a lever 23, which in turnis connected by a link 24, with" a needle bar 20.
l he movable blade '15 of the trimming mechanism is carried by an arm 25. This arm. is formed integral with a collar 26. This collar-'26 is a. part of a yoke :27. The
. yoke 27 has an upper collar 28. and the collars26 and 28 are freely journaled on the guide bar 10. The guide bar lOhas'two fixedcollars 29 and 30, between which the yoke collars are placed. The yoke 10 hasan upwardly extending arm. 31, carrying aball stud 32. Cooperating with the ball stud 32 is an eccentric strap 33, see Figure 2, which in turn engages'an eccentric 34.- on the shaft 6. As this shaft'6 rotates, theeccentric will throughnthe eccentric strap 33, vibrate the yoke 27, andthis in turn will vibrate the arm '25 and the trimmin blade 15 carried thereby. The trimming blade 15 is held "in a i resulting in little wear or vibration ojlithc parts.
It will be obvious that minor changes in the details of construction may be made without departing from the spirit of th invention, as set claims. i

The combination of a standard, an arm projecting laterally therefrom, a for- Wardly projecting arm carried by the laterally extending arm, a depending support at the outer end of said forwardly projecting arm, a work support carried at the lower end of said depending support and sustained thereby and extending toward and terminating underneath the laterally extending arm, a movable trimming member, a vertical support, a yoke having spaced collars mounted to oscillate on said vertical support, fixed collars on said support tor retaining the yoke in a predetermined rertical position, an arm integral with one of said collars and carrying the movable trimming member, an arm projecting vertically from said yoke, a cross shaft extending through the standard, and the laterally projecting arm, an eccentric on said cross shaft, an eccentric strap cooperating with said eccentric and connected directly with the arm for vibrating the yoke.
