EARL V. WILLIAMS, OF KOKOMO, AND EVERT C. WILLIAMS, 0F GALVESTON, INDIANA.
OIL BURNER.
Application led August 23, 1921. Serial; No. 494,481.
To It IJ/1.0m I? may con cem Be it known that we, EARL V. lVILLiAMs and livna'r Wliiaunais, citizens of the llnited `States, residing at Kokomo, in the county of Howard and State of Indiana, and Galveston, Cass County, Indiana, respectively, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oil Burners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to liquid fuel stoves. and has for one of its objects to provide a simply constructed attachment whereby the creation of smoke and like products of combustion is prevented and the stove rendered practically smokeless and free from odors.
lilith these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claim, and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention Figure l is a side elevation of a liquid fuel stove with the novel attachment applied.
liligure 2 Fig. 1.
Figure 3 is a plan view enlarged, of a part of the apparatus with the chimney member in section on the line 3 3 of Fig.
Figure 4 is a bottom plan view enlarged of the combined flame ring and chimney support.
Figure .7 is an enlarged sectional detail illustrating the construction more fully.
The improved attachment may be applied to various forms of liquid fuel stoves without material. change, and it is not desired to limit the invention in this respect, but for the purpose of illustration the improved attachment is shown applied to a conventional stove of the above noted class in which 1U and Vll represent the outer and inner wif-lt tubes which support the wick 12 between them aud with an outwardly directed flange lil intermediate the ends of the outer tube,
The burner tubes 10 and 11 are supported upon the fuel feed tube 14 and enclosed in a easing 1o, the latter in turn, carrying the grate or grill 16 for supporting the cooking utensils in the ordinary manner.
Extending inwardly from the inner wick tube 11 are supporting wires 17 on which `the inner tube 18 of the spreader device 20 is a section on the line 2-2 of is engaged by bayonet slots 19. By this means the spreader device is supported in position relative to the wick tube as shown, and can be readily detached by simply partially rotating the spreader and moving it upwardly.
Encompassing the outer Wick tube 10 is a flame ring 21 including an inwardly directed upper portion approaching the upper edge of the outer wick tube, and producing a restricted passage for the upwardly moving air externally of the wick.
At its lower edge the member 21 is formed with an encompassing outwardly directed flange 22 to support an endless band 23, the latter extending at its upper edge above the line of the flame, as shown.
Directed inwardly from the flame ring 21 are a plurality of lugs 24 bearing at their inner ends upon the flange 13 of the outer burner tube. By this means the flame ring is maintained in position and uniformly spaced from the wiclr tube.
The chimney portion of the improved device is represented as a whole at 25 and includes an inwardly directed annular top member 26.
At its lower edge the chimney member 25 rests upon an annular member comprising an outer chimney supporting flange 27, an inner downwardly directed flange or rim 28, and an upwardly extending intermediate portion 29, the latter portion having a plurality of air intake apertures 30.
The annular vmember is so proportioned that the elevated portion 29 with its perforations 30 is disposed above the line of the lower edge of the spreader 20, or above the line of the lower part of the flame from the wick, so that air entering through the apertures comes in contact With the flame just as it passes over the spreader, and thus supplies fresh oxygen to instantly consume any particles of unconsumed carbon or other products of the combustion, and thus effectually prevent the creation of smoke or gases and renders the burner smokeless and odorless.
Attached to the chimney 25 and the slipporting flange 27 of the annular member is a handle device 31 to enable the chimney and its annular member to be tilted upon the edge of the member 23 opposite to the handle, when the burner is to be lighted.
The Wick adjusting device is indicated at 32 and is of the usual form.
