Oli? CHICAGO, LLNOIS.
STRAIG'IEITEDGE DE'VECE.
Application led March 25, 1920. Serial No. 368,652.
To all whom "it may concern Be it known that l, LILLIAN Runnirsnonr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of l'llinois, have invented a new and useful linprovement in Fntraightedge Devices, ot which the following; is a speciiieation.
This invention relates particularly to a device in the nature ot a straight edge adapted Jfor photograph retow/'hingr` artists7 pos-ter work, etc.
The primary object oi the invention is to provide an improved device well adapted to the purpose indicated.
The invention is illustrated in its preterred embodiment in the accompanying dra-wing, in which- Figure l represents a plan view of the iniproved device; Fig. 2, an elevational view of the saine; Fig. 3, a sectional view taken as indicated at line 3-3 ot Fig. l; and Fig. ll, a perspective view oit one ot the adjustable bearing blocks employed.
ln the construction illustrated, A represents a straight edge strip; and B, B, bearings; blocks which are `adjustable longitudin ally with relation to the strip il.
in the illustration given, the straight edge strip A is provided with straight edges 1 and 2, the latter being` undercut. i
rEhe inernber A is provided centrally with a longitudinal slot 3, which is reduced at its lower portion, as indicated at 3. rlhe slot extends troni near one end ot the member A to near the other end tnereo'l".` Each oi' the bea ring! blocks ld and lli may, in'eiieral'ily, be o 'I' he forni illustrated in Thus, each hlocl; is provided. on its upper side with a central elongated lenen, or spline. 4:, which works in the reduced portion la ciA the slot as a guido. The blo-ehe are adj ustably secured by means of screws 5 equipped with washers 5a. rlhe washers 5a hear upon the shoulder afforded by the bottoni ot the wide portion oit the slot, and the screws extend through the slot and into the blocks and serve to clamp the blocks to the strip il.. The guidetenons 1lare low enough so that they will project slightly less than 'flush with the loottom of the wide portion of the slot. rllhus, the blocks can be securely clamped to the strip A at any desired point.
ln the use or the improved device :tor the purpose ot retouching' photographs, 'For eas ample, the blocks are adjusted to bear upon the card, or mounting, of the photograph at opposite sides of the photograph proper; and the retouching can be done upon the photograph loy rneans ot a pen, the strip being' used as a straight edge. rEhe improved device is adapted to be adjusted to the wort of retouchinp,- photographs ot' varying width. The blocks may be caused to bear upon the card in such inanner as to cause it to lie flat while the work oli' retouching is performed, This is or especial advantage in work of re touchingphotographs, which have a tenl de'ncy to curl up or warp. The device may be employed, also, for artists poster work and similar work.
The forni illustrated affords a cheap and satisfactory construction for `inost purposes. y rlhe strip A. and the blocks B may be coinposed of wood. Any suitable adjustable connection between the blocks and the strip may be employed. vThe blocks are short enough in a direction transversely of the strip A to enable the edge portion of the strip to project over the 1clocks. Ordinarily, the strip A will have straight edges, as shown.
ililhat l regard as new, and desire to secure by Letters latent, is:
l. A device of the character set forth, confiprisin ,f a strip adapted for ruling purposes, and bearing blocks disposed wholly on one side of said strip and adjustably connected therewith. for adjustment longitudinally olf the strip, said blocks being adapt ed to rest upon a card which is to be ruled.
2. il. device ot the character set forth, comprising; a "o provided with a straight e adapted foi. iling purposes, said strip provided with a longitudinal islot, bearing blocks disposed on one side of said strip and slidably connected with said slot, and nieans for clampingly securingsaid hearing blocks to said strip.
A. device of the character set forth, coinprisinp; a strip provided with a stra-ight edge adapted for ruling purposes, said strip being;` provided with a longitudinal slot, bearing bloclrs disposed on one side ot said strip and slidably connected with said slot, said blocks being wholly covered by said strip, and means rior clainpingly securing `said hearing` blocks to said stri LILLAN 'RilDElRSDORE
