Description

A. s. MANN.
Hand Washing-Rubbers. N0. 144,118. Patented 0ct.28,1373.
UNITED STATES PATENT Orrron.
AUSTIN S. MANN, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN HAND WASHING-RUBBERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 144,118, dated October 28, 1873; application filed October 13, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUSTIN S. MANN, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand Washing-Rubbers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descrip tion of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which"it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawings, which form part of this specification.
This invention relates to that class of hand washing-rubbers which are composed of one or more small rollers carried in a suitable frame, by which the washer-woman manipulates the device in rubbing soiled linen upon an ordinary wash-board. Hy improvement consists in forming in the frame or handle a covered reservoir'to contain a quantity of suds, which is gradually discharged upon the piece of goods on the wash-board as it undergoes the rubbing and pressingaction of the rollers. A fresh supply of suds being thus continually discharged upon the clothes will greatly accel crate the cleansing process, and also render it unnecessary to dip the clothes into the suds in the tub at short intervals.
In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved rubber. Fig. 2
is a vertical longitudinal section thereof. Fig.
3 is a transverse section,
The same letters of reference are used in all the figures in the designation of identical parts.
In the exampleillustrated two rubbing-rollers, A and B, are employed, the former being fluted, while the latter has a plain surface. Thus one will be more properly a rubbing and the other a pressing roller. Their journals turn in bearings in the housings O and D, which are connected rigidly by the fixed handpiece E, which maybe of the form delineated, or of any other preferred shape, and can be made of any desired material. This handpiece is hollow, forming a reservoir, F, for the reception of suds, which are introduced at the top, from one-or both ends, through the cow ered passages ff and central port f. This manner. of arranging the inlet prevents the suds from slopping out, and any that may splash over into the channels ff will be conveyed back again, to facilitate which the bottom of these channels may be made sloping toward the central port. A vent, f is provided for the escape of the air in filling the reservoir. Its lower portion (shown as of V- shaped form in cross-section) is provided with a series of tine perforations, f through which the suds are discharged upon the clothes.
\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is r 1. A hand washing-rubber composed of one or more rubbing-rollers and a hollowhand piece, forming a reservoir, F, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. A hand washing-rubber composed of one or more rubbing-rollers and a hollowhandpiece, having covered passages f f, central port f and small discharge-holes f substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the have hereunto set .my hand this October, 1873.
foregoing I (3th day of e A. S. MANN.
