Application filed April 22, 1921. Serial No. 463,666.
To all w71 om t may concern.'
'lle it known that CUR@ TN. HELTMAN, a citizen or' the United States, residing` `at indiana, in the county or lndianaand State ot Pennsylvania, have invented Anew and use'tul linproveinents in Brakes, ot which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to r'braking devices, and more 'particularly to a brake specially adapted for use on inine cars.
@ne ot the main vobjects of the invention is to provide a braking means which may he readily applied to mine cars of standard construction and hy which the brake hloclrs are held out ot contact with the car wheels when the hralre is not applied. A further object is to provide a braking device which may be readily operated from either side of the car. Another object is to provide simple and efficient means wherehy the brake blocks may be easily applied with great pressure to the wheels. Further objects will appear from the detailed description.
ln the drawings:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary top plan view of a mine car of standard type with braking` means constructed in accordance with my invention applied.
Figure 2 is an end view ot the car with the brakingmeans applied.
Figure 8 is a side view of the brake block and associated parts, the wheels of the car being shown tragmentarily.
Figure l is a top plan view of one of the brake blocks and associated parts.
Figure 5 is a detail of the means for securingv the operatingu lever in adjustment.
detent lever 1G is roclrahly mounted ina suitable clip secured on operating lever 1 adjacent to the upper end thereof. This detent lever engages, at its lower end, with the inner tace ot the upper end of a leaf spring 18 secured to lever 1, this spring being provided with a. pin or detent 1Sa operating,1 through an opening 181 through the lever and adapted lor engagement in any one, selectively, of the series of openings 17a of a rack 17 secured to the end of the car.
Villien lever` 1 is in central position, as illustrated, the inner ends of levers l are held depressed thus holdingr blocks 15 raised out of Contact with the Wheels. By swingingthe operating lever in either direction the inner ends: of levers l are raised thus applying` the blocks to the wheels. Due to 'the tact that lever 1 is pivoted adjacent to its lower end, and levers l are pivoted adjacent to their outer ends, slight pressure on lever 1 will result in the hloclrs being;- applied to the wheels with relatively great pressure. Asthe blocks will he applied when the leveil is moved in either directiou troni its central position. this provides simple and cflicient braking means which may he readily operated from either Side ot the car which is a very desirable .result particularly in inine cars. .cls will he understood, it may he found desirable b v experience to resort to chan in details of construction and arrangement of parts of the invention, and l intend to include all such variations., as fall within the scope of the appended claims, in this application in which the preferred torni only of my invention is disclosed.
TWhat l claim is 1. ln combination with a car, brake pressing the blocks 'when rocked in eitliei' direction:iwey '.(ioin cen-` ti'al position and ioi" raising` the blocks when tlie lever is moved toward central position.
2. ln braking ineens, i'ockably mounted shafts, ernis secured on seid slia-ts, brake 4blocks Connected to the shafts so es to be raised and lowered thereby, supplemental levers pivoted intermediate Vtheir ends :intl raving their outer ends connected to seid arms by pin and slot connections, an operating` lever positioned midway between the outer ends of tlie snpplenfientzil levers, a link pivotecl at its upper end to the lower enclof the operating lever, incl pin and slot' connections betweenthe lower enel of said link incl tlie inner ends o'l the supplemental levers.
In combination with e. ear, brike bloels positioned Aaubove and between the wheels ot the ear, ineens for supporting seid blocks in vertical position7 en operating lever, and connections between said lever :minos/i ziii l the blot-lis tor (lepressing tlie blocks when tlie lever is rocked, iii either direction away trom central position and for raising; the blocks when the lever .moved towiiifl central position.
tpln combination` Awith a. oer, brake blocks pvotally suspended ebove the wheels of thev oar, an operating lever, and Connections between seid lever and the blocks for.
depressing the blocks when vthe lever is rocked in either cliieetionewey from-eentrul position andy tor raising the blocks whentlie lever is moved toward central` position.. 'y y 5. ln combination with le eer, brake niembers mounted forniovenien't into and out connections toting` to inove the brake mein# bers away vfrom the wheelswhen seid lever is nioved toward central position.v y
ln testimony whereof I ei'lix Inv signature.
