writing machines, and is adapted yfor writing on catalogue index cards where it is necessary to write on the extreme bottom of the cards. Such cards are used in well known filing systems. illustrated as attached to a Royal standard typewriter, but in many of its aspects is adapted ,to any ltype of machine.
An object of my invention is to provide a card holding device that may be mounted near the frontv of the machine and hold the upper end of the vcard While it is being written upon' near the bottom.
Another object of my invention is to -provide such a device with adjustable side and leading edge gages so that cards of various dimensions may be controlled thereby.
Another' lobject of my invention is to mount such a cardholding device above the platen and provide means for lockingit in operative position as well as permitting it to be thrown rearwardly out of the Way when not in use.
Another object of my invention is to provide card 'holding meansv mounted on the carriage and movable therewith which cooperate with other means that are nor-vv mally i stationary.

This card clip or age consists of an extended fiat portion l upon which the card is adapted to rest, provided with a turned up flange N2 which has a longitudinal slot n. The fiange N2 lies along the vertical i wall of the arm M on the outside thereof,
and a set screw n3 passes through said slot n and into one of the openings m2 to thereby hold the card clip in adjusted position.
The portions N and N2 are sf'eparatedv through the greater part of their extent by' a slot or bifurcation n3 as clearly shown in i Figure 6. This permits the card clip to be adjusted downwardly far enough to hold very narrow cards, the bifurcation embracing the portion of the arm M which is adjacent to the sleeve M. The portion N also has a bent up end N3 that serves as an end ga for the cards.
lso bent from the portion iN on either side ofthe end N 3 are ears O connected by a pin O. A clip member O2 has rearwardly bent'ears o that are mounted on the pin 0 within the ears O. A spring o encircles the pivot pin O and has one end vbearing against the end of the member O2 on its under side, and the-other end bearing against the end N3. This spring presses the card engaging portion O3 of the clip against the member N or a card carried thereby. The upper end of the member 02 may be used as a finger piece to press it away from its holding posltion when it is desired to release a card. Each clip member O3 carries and has a finger piece P at one end and a roller P3 at the other end. Tt is also provided wlth a bent off stopp which bears against the under side of the arm K when the parts are in the position shown in Figure 7 This devicel is employed when it is desired to have the card holding device ata further distance from the platen. When the latch L is released, and the finger piece P moved forward, the roller engages the top edge of the carriage frame B and cams the card holding frame up to the Figure 7 position. The roller P2. and the stop p are then in such relation to the carriage frame and arm K that the partsv will be retained in that position against any accidental movement.
When the device is employed i`n this position, the modified scale shown'in Figure 2 1s preferred. This scale 'R has upwardly projecting fingers 1' corresponding to the fingers L of the other lform, but they are bentl forwardly as clearly shown in F lgure 7.

lnthe use of the device the card X mav have its'lower end inserted downward past .the holding fingers r of the scale, as shown 1n dotted llnes in Figure 3. The upper end of the card is then pushed under the holding fingers O3 and movedl upwardly until 1t rests squarely against the leading edge gageS Qi' abutments N3. It then occupies the thecard to beislid under the spring position shown in cross section in Figure 3 and is ready for the writing operation.
The card may also be introduced into the machine as 'indicated in Figure 7 if the modified form of scale is employed, by raising the attachment to the position shown in that figure through use of the lever P,

Where the device is applied to the Royal standard machine or to other machines in movement, itis to be noted that the scale H with the retaining fingers h will shift together with the card holding attachment, so that both the upper and lower ends of the cards will be firmly held at all times during the writing.
By means of the set screws n2 and the -series of openings m2, the card clips can be adjusted through definite distances, and by means of the slots n a fine intermediate adjustment may be obtained through the use of theA same set screws.
While I have illustrated. and described my invention in its preferred form, it is obvious that many of the details may be modified without departing from the spirit thereof. A single card holding arm and clip I might beused separately, and the attachment might be used with scale members of varying construction. I n general, the invention is to be considered as limited only by the scope of the appended claims.
I claimas my invention:

A card holding device for typewriting machines comprising members pivoted to the carriage. a rod carried by the forward end ofsaid members, sleeves adjustably mounted on said rod, upwardly and rearwardly extending arms supported by said sleeves, a clip member carried by each arm and independently adjustable toward and from the printing line, and means for locking said members in operative position.

A card holding device for typewriting machines comprising a frame on the carriage, upwardly extendingv arms carried by said frame, card clips carried .by said arms and adjustable toward the printing line, anda card scale stationary as regards longitudinal movement of the carriage and which has relatively long upwardly extending forwardly curved fingers to engage the bottom of the card.
12. A card holding device for typewriting machines comprising a carriage shiftable for case shift, a frame thereon, arms upon said frame and adjustable thereon, card clips carried by said arms and adjustable toward the platen, and a card scale stationary as regards longitudinal movement of the -carriage and `which has forwardly curved fingers projecting a considerable distance across the printing line, all of said parts being shiftable with the carriage.

A card holding `device for typewriting machines comprising a. frame pivoted to the carriage to move to and from operative position, upwardly extending arms carried by said frame, card clips adjustably mounted on said arms, means for ,locking said frame inoperative position and means for holding said frame in inoperative position.

A card holding device` for typewriting machines comprising a frame carried by the carriage, upwardly extending arms carried by said frame, card clips adjustably carried by said arms, said clips being slotted to engage the arms and permit adjustment to near the printing point, whereby narrow cards may be held.

A card holding device for typewritiug machines comprising a support mounted on the carriage, upwardly extending arms adjustably mounted on the support, a c lip member carried by each arm and acting to gage and guide a card, and devices for engaging the lower end of the card to direct it into position and hold it when positioned.
