REF s LLABLE FUSE, FlLsn JUNE 19, 1918,
WITNESSES:
A y INVENTOR jlzzdm//a/fm m Jaimy /ATTORNEY Patented Jan. 2, 1923.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANDREW H. BAKKEN, OF EDGEWOOD PARK, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC & MANUFACTURING VANIA.
Application filed .Tune 19,
To all whom t may conce/m: Y
Be it known that I, ANDREW H. Balmain, a `citizen 0i? the United States7 and a resident of Edgewood Fark in the county of Allegheny and State of l ennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement 1n Refillable Fus7 of which the following is speciiication.
My invention relates to fuses and particularly to reiillable luse structures ot the cartridge type. l l
The object ot my invention 1s to provide relillable :fuse cartridge .in which the end @if the enclosing casing is ot such configuration as to permit the permanent disposal thereon ot terminal members having portions eX- tending across the entrance to the casing and at the same time permit a clear view through the same, facilitate the removal of volatil- 'ized metal therefrom and effect a rugged, durable and accessible connection with the i'usible element.
ln practising my invention7 l provide a. metallic sleeve that embraces, and is permanent-ly secured to, the end of a cylindrical insulatingcasing. The sleeve is adapted to receive a cooperating removable terrule and has a scmi-cylindrical extension and a semidiscoidal transverse Web portion at the outer end ot the extension. The arrangement. is such as to provide a rigid and durable seat member for the end ot' a fusible element and to permit a free view of the same and the interior of the casing.
Fig. 1 of the accompanying drawings is a longitudinal view, partially in elevation and partially in section, oit a fuse device embodying my invention, Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a portion of the same, with the ferrule removed, and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sec-tional view ot a portion oit a modified itorm oi Vlfuse device embodying my invention.
In Figs. il and Q, au initially hollow cylin drical casing 1 of fibre or other suitable material is so cut away at its ends as to form substantially semi-cylindrical extensions 2 that are displaced 180C from each other about the axis of the casing 1. Rivets si, or other suitable means, secure a sleeve or member 3, initially of cup shape, to each end of the casing 1. Each of the sleeves 3 has a portion so cut away that the remaining COBIPANY. .A CORPORATION OF PENNSYL- REFILLABLE FUSE.
tension 2 and constitutes a` -terminal seat,
over the edge 6 of which an endr 7 of the iusible element 8 may ce bent t0 rest against the outer tace thereof. An intermediate annular section 9 of the sleeve 3 is exteriorlv screw-threaded to receive a partially inte- .riorly screw-threaded end ferrule 10 and is oic such outer diameter as to cause the outer faces ot the remaining annular portion of the sleeve and the ferrule 10 to be flush.
By advancing the 'ferrule 10 toward the center eli the casing 1 on the sleeve 3, the end ".7 oii the iusible element S may be securely clamped against the outer Yface ot the web 5.
'line cut-away portion at each end of the caslug and the annular displacement of said portions permit a clear view through the casing during the operation of renewing a ruptured element and also permit the ready removal ot particles of a volatilized element or other Aforeign particles.
rThe web portion 5 ot the sleeve 3 serves as a rigid and durable support or scat for the element 8 well as a direct conducting means 'to the terminal jaws or clips (not shown) of any circ-uit in which it may be desir-ed that a` :fuse be located.
Further, the rela-tion of the errule 10 to the sleeve 3 and the configuration of the latter furnish durable wearing surfaces between the same that may be frequently separated and joined and permit their placement in standard clips or jaws in the same manner as would be permitted with the Yterrule disposed directly on the casing 1.
ln Fig. 8, the screw-threaded portion 9 is at the inner end of the sleeve 3 that has an annular inner projecting flange or crimped edge 11 to assist in securing the same to the casing 1. In this form of device, the ferrule l0 whollyv embraces the sleeve 3.
lVhile I have shown and described a particular itorm ot' my invention, changes may be effected therein. without departing from the spirit and scope thereof. as set forth in the appended claims.
I Claim :is my invention:
l. A fuse device comprising si tubular casing` lieving en end portion extending beyond the tubular portion thereof, :i jacket for tlie extending portion,` and a oep member disposed over the jacket end the end of tbe Casing.
2. A fuse device comprising a` cylimlrieal casing having a substantially semi-cylindricel extension at en end thereof and an zmnulzir member embracing seid C21-sing cent said extension, Seid annular member hevuig e portion Conforming; to the outer surreoe of seid extension and portion constituting :i ti'zensveree web across, tbe end'of the seme.
ffl. A fuse device Comprising-zi cylindrical easing' having; e eubetentiellysemi-oyliuclrb eel extension. :it an end tbereo'j :in annuler member embrioing seid easing; sind heving a` portion conformingl to the outer surface of seid irteneion and portion constiutingy e semi-diseoidel transverse web across the end of tbe seme und e Cep embreo ing` seid annuler member.
ri. fuse device comprising an initially cylindrical casing, an initifillg7 elosed-end cylindrical cap men'ibeA secured to end thereof, said casing and cap member being so Similarly out es to lieve 31 ringw substantially semi-cylindrical extensions it their outer ends for the purpose of provid4 ing e readily observable terminal fuiible element und e. removable. exi-operatinf`v 'errule (lisposed on, seid oep member.
A fuse device Comprising; e tubular eesin and semi-tubular iuee supperLing,n
meii'iber proj from the end thereof.
(i. A 'linee device comprising tubular eusino-7 ;i fusible member., e metal semi-cylindrical supporting memeer extending beyond the end of tbe tubular' casing; and so supporting' the fusible member that a, portion thereof between the tubular easing and the Supporting member is visible, and ai metal cap for enclosing the fusible member and for connecting` it to the supporting member.
7. A fuso device confiprising` e, tubular casing, fusible element7 si metal supporting member extending beyond the end of the tubular easing and so supporting the fusible member that 2l portion thereof between the tubular casing and the supporting member is `vieible, and e` metal oep threaded upon the supporting' member and adapted to be drown into clamping engagement with the fusible elenient when tbe Cep is rotzited With reepeet to alie supporting member. f
ji fuse device comprising a tubular casing, e fusible member and a metal semicylindricel sipporting` men'iber extending bevond the end of the tubular casing' and lievino e transverse supporting element for ingr tbe fusible member and for sup-y ing; it a point beyond the end of the ing. A
9, i reilV able fuse comprising a. fusible eleme tubular casing for enclosing, the iusible element and having e, portion of its wall out away adjacent the end thereof to expose :i portion of the fusible element et e point Within the casing and e, transverse eup'i'io'rf; on the easing for supporting the fusilile element CentrallyT of the casino:
llt fr rellloble fuse comprising a tubular member, e fusible element, zi support for the 'l ibie element secured to tbe tubular member end eo constructed.that an opening is proi'nlel between the support and the tubulr f member through which the operative :iio'n of the fusible element is visible for nepeetion and cap for closing the said opening and for clamping the fusible element to the support.
n teetiniony 'whereof7 l have hereunto l my neme this 29th day of May,
eubscri Jee MHS.
