To f//f wlmi/l, t may @officer/if.'
ile it known that-, JAMES l). lnoon, a citizen ol the United States, residing at olli ilastview Parli, Chicago, in the county ot' Took and State of illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement, in Radiators, oi' which the ioiloiving is a'specilication.
This invention relates to improvements in radiators.` and more especially to that type oi' radiator adapted for use in connection with inotor vehicles for cooling;r the Water, or other fluid used e cooling medium around the cyiinders of an internal combustion or other l in that form of device embodying the features oi' my invention shown in the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a view in front elevation of my improved radiator, Fig, 2 is a sectional View taken as indicated hy the line of lligure 3, and Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken as indicated by the line 3 ot' Fig. 2.
,es shown in. the drawings, the radiator comprises an upper Water tank 5, a lower water tank 6, vertical water tubes or lpipes 7 connecting the tanks, and cooling tins or plates 8 through which the tubes 7 pass. The tank 5 is provided with a suitable inlet pipe 9, and likewise the tank 6 is pro- `vided with a suitable outlet pipe 10.
is clearly shown Fig. 2, the vertical water tubes 7 are arranged in elggthtecn rows ol? 'four each, with one entre tube at eaci iili in the'corners. Each row of four rigged in vertical plane lying ily to .a vertical plane intersecting the atei. at t angles. The distance hctn'een the ro 'e .ie sufiicicnt. so that the front tube of one row does not cover the back tube of the adjacent row. ln other words, there is not incre than one tube lying in any vertical plane intersecting the radiator at right angles.
The cooling fins or plates 8 are formed of thin sheet metal or other material adapted to conduct heat from the tubes 7 and radiate the saine to the air. They are provided with holes adapted to accommodate the tubes 7, and are held in place h soldering or by other suitable means. T 1e fins or plates 8 are ohliquely arranged with respect to a horand -also may he maintained or :iss-.steil a suitable ien weil known in the art, l'
shown on the drawings). The air referred to is also shown by die in Fig. ne
it will he noted that the arr-ar ment of the tubes in slanting rows et i or each Fig. 2) permits each tulle to he struck directly by the incoming` air. o'lier words, .no tube shields, shadows. or niete another tube from the incoming .ily this arrangement of the tubes, their cooiinif will be facilitated. i
lt will he noted also that the cooling plaies or ins 3, being; ohliquely arranged with their rear edges higher than their iront i will direct the incoming air upwardly, af; indicated hy the arrows in ifif f causing'the air passing through l tc telic a longer course than through in :i horizontal plane, with suit that it will cool u greet i sul. the tubes lxy this arrangement or fins d also, :i grenier comliiicd fiorini-e ot all such fins is obtained with za snif her. in other words, hy airain ohliqucly, greater cooling' so smaller number of fins is ohiauwd, the hns were arranged liorizontal` iihile here shown and dcfiriimi tain cinhi'idinienfs of my ini-'enioin to he understood that it is capable of many modifications. @hinges therefore in the construction and eri-angemacht maj* l inode without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as disclosed in the appended claim. in which ii my intention. to claim all novelty inherent in my invention as broadly as possible in view of the prior lt should also he noted that the inclination of the fins exposes the top suriari more flatly to the incoming air, thus causing bhe s bis cool faster #sham ii" mery their edgeswere cxpod to tha incoming' ai?.
What 'JT daim as new, ,and desiae in se cui@ by Leiters Patent is:
.in a, radiator, subsiantially vergca waiter mbe@ m'mnged in Slimming mwa with a sufcem; distance between @smh Wo adjazm vows; so that the mnt wie@ @f @mamme wl :not banket the bwk mbe ai th@ maent TOW.
