`Application led July 28,
r/f/g ZZ fici; om "t may conce/'iu s i lrnov'nthat l. CLE?, zv'r H. RrrzLnn, the llni re iding` at alo, inthe county oi `Berrien and ii/iichigan` have invented certain and useiul improvements in Railway rlies, oit' which the following is a specicationn The invention has reference to railway ties and particularly to ties oi' the combined steel and wood type. y
in object oi the invention is to provide an improved torni of tie having rail-supporting bloclrs insertable at opposite ends and a l, gravel lillingij space inwardly of the supporting ends and on the underside to enable the tie to become embedded in. its place,
An additional object is to provide a railway tie o'lv simple and inexpensive construction and embodyingl a mainbody portion, of practically indestructible material forming the tie proper, and supporting blocks to fit the tie, said blocks being` removable when necessary to repair the tie or to be replaced by new blocks.
Various other objects and advantages oil' the invention will become apparent during the continuance oit the following description.
ln the drawings .i
y Figure l is a top plan of the improved railway tie.
Figure 2 is a bottom. plan thereof.
Figure 3 is a centrala longitudinal section thereof, and,
Figure l is a vertical cross section through the center or the tie. i p
rlhe tie embodies an elongated metallic casing' l0 having the tubular ends ll and l2 closed at their inner end by plates i3 and 14 extending vertically et the tie as shown. Each plate is provided at the side with a securing flange l5 by means of which it is tastened to the side wall `16 or the tie by means ot rivets or other suitable astenings 1.7. These plates, it is to be noted, are relatively spaced so that they provide, in conlillnction with the top and sides ot the tie, a hollow or cavity 'i8 at the central portion of the tie and open at the under side thereof. The purpose of having the center of the tie open at the bottom is' to enable gravel to iill the space when the tie is embedded in its place so that the latter will be firmly held in its position in the road-bed; the gravel y aside troni providing` anchoring` means for the tie serves naar. ,serial ne. 421.592.
' rtical wallsl and 14,
inserted through each plate i3 and ll, shank irst so that the headed end is at the inner hollow portion of the tie, is a securing bolt 20 extending longitudinally through block i9 to the end ot the tie and having a nut 2l Von exposed end whereby the block may be fastened securely in place. Whenever a block becomes worn or impaired to such an extent that its usefulness is at an end, it may be .readily removed by unlooseningr` nut 2l and withdrawing the block from the tubular end of the tie.
'llo facilitate the removal and insertion of the blocks., the latter are each provided with a longitudinally extending bore 22 for the reception oit' bolt 2O and to prevent the eX- posure of the outer ends of the blocks to the elements, end shields in the form ot metallic Aplates 28, are provided, which lit into the.
tubular ends oi: the tie and are retained in place over the ends of the block by means of the 'securing nut 2l` asclearly shown in Figure of the drawing. y n
lach tubular end has its upper surface provided with a transversely extending opening" or cut-out through which a portion of the supporting` block is exposed as indicated at 24e The sides of the openings or cut-outs are spaced apart sutliciently to accommodate the base 'flange of the rail together with the necessary spikes. ln attaching the rail, the spikes are driven into the wood blocks upon which 'the rail rests so as to tasten the latter directly thereto, the wooden blocks providing; a sufficiently yieldable support for the rails as to uphold the latter rtirmly hat not too rigidly under the stresses and strains ot rolling` stock passing thereoif'er. ln addition the metal body portion or sheath provides a practically indestructible tie structure which is lasting` and durable and which enables repairs to be made conveniently and without material alteration or disturbance of the track since it is possible `to readily replace worn blocks a beingstopped at the proper distance by the e with new ones by merely removing the `spikes and slipping the blocksy in place at each end of the tie, it being unnecessary to disconnect the rail which extends crosswise vof the tie and in its proper' place in the cut-outs.
From the foregoing it is believed that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily understood and therefore further detailed description is deemed unnecessary.`
, What is claimed is :4-
A railway tie having a hollow central portion open at the bottom to' provide' a gravel space, an outer tubular end-portion vin line with the gravel space, plates depending vertically from the upper wall oi' the tie and closing the inner terminals oit the tubular ends, a bolt carried by each of said plates and projecting longitudinally through the CLEMENT H. RITZLER.
